He walked down the stairs and headed towards the kitchen for some breakfast. His mother was still asleep because it was the weekend, so he poured out some cereal into a bowl, grabbing the last of the milk in the kitchen.
As he settled down to eat, he heard the doorbell ring, and he set down his spoon into the bowl of cereal, milk splashing down the sides of the full bowl. Just great.
In his excitement to open the door, leftover tremors from his newfound wealth had made him drop the spoon too fast, and now not only would he have soggy cereal, he had a mess to clean up.
He walked over to the door and yanked down the handle, expecting to see someone. Instead, he noticed that the bill of the mailbox was lowered, signifying that they had new mail.
His mother was on top of the bills, luckily for them, but curiosity got the better of him, and he went over to the mailbox, pulling out a small box that rattled whenever he shook it.
Back inside the house, he took a seat at the island again and set the box on top of it. He would eat first, and then grab a paper towel for the mess he had made. Maybe when he was done with all that, he would open the box.
That was what was on his mind as he finished his cereal, and then a call came in on his phone. I really need to change that ringtone, he thought, sliding up on the call.It was his father calling again, and considering the fact that he was a newly made billionaire, he was looking forward to the call.
“What's up dad?”
“Did you get it? ”“The money? Yeah I already told y-”“No,” his father interrupted, already irritated with his son. “the package I sent to you. I paid for express shipping yesterday, and it should already have arrived. ”
“Oh yes.” Jason remembered the mystery package that was rattling. So it was from his father? That was strange. “What's in it? ”
“Put me on speaker and open it up. I want to ensure you have the right box. ”Jason did as his father asked and opened up the box, seeing that it was a jewelry box with an ornate black ring. “You got me a ring? The detailing on this looks really expensive dad, why did you spend so much money?”
Frustrated, his father began to speak. “Look. That ring is a family heirloom. It is one of the rings that has been passed down for centuries in our family, it serves as identification.
You can wear it casually around, as with other rings, but the difference with this ring is that trained eyes will be able to easily identify you as a member of our prestigious family.
It also has more uses, and can serve as protection and even bring you respect in specific circles. It is a really important ring, and you must ensure that you do not lose it. Carry it everywhere with you.”
“Everywhere?” he asked, furrowing his brow.
“Everywhere, Jason. It must always be against your skin, to inform people that you are of a prestigious family.Even when you are attempting to keep a low profile, I would advise you that it remains on your person, in your pocket or in a necklace as a chain. I understand that it can be overwhelming, the attention from wearing this creed, but please, do as I ask of you. ”
Nodding, Jason turned the ring over in his palm.
“Jason?” called his father. He had forgotten that he was on a call with his father, and he snapped back to reality, rolling his eyes. “Yes dad.”His father hung up with a click, and Jason pocketed the ring, going back to the kitchen island where he had spilled his milk. He tore off some paper towels from a roll and planted them on top of the table, mopping up the spill.
His mother was already stressed from many other things, he saw no reason to stress her anymore. What would he do with so much money, he wondered, stroking his chin.
He could do just about anything, and yet, he couldn't decide what exactly he wanted to do. Should he just leave the money alone?
The small town was very quiet on weekends, and he wondered what he could do for fun.He slipped his ring into his pocket just as a message came in his phone and it gave off a little ping! He picked it up from the table and looked at the screen, pleasantly surprised to see that he had a message from Ashley.
Ashley was one of the nice girls over at school. She was on the cheer team and was one of the more popular girls, but she had never let that get to her head.
They had first become friends during a lab project in the 7th grade, so she was one of his oldest friends.
He was excited to see what the text was about, so he opened it.A: YOU ARE INVITED TO MY BIRTHDAY PARTY TOMORROW! IT'S AT MY HOME, AND I WOULD LOVE TO SEE YOU THERE.
Excited, he quickly shot off a response to her, informing her that he would be there tomorrow. He also wanted to ask her if there was anything that he should bring along, but thought better of it.Her family was richer than his before this recent discovery, so she wouldn't ask him to bring anything. She had never maltreated him though, which was why he was thinking of getting her a birthday present.
He picked up the phone and read her excited message again, feeling a flutter in his heart. He was invited to an actual party! If he didn't know better, he would think that he was being pranked.
Luckily for him though, she was nothing like that, so he was not worried. He remembered that she liked butterflies and colorful trinkets and decided that he would go into town to get her some.
His mother was awake upstairs, and he could hear her footsteps dragging on the wooden floors. He waited until she was at the stairs to kiss her forehead good morning.
“Good morning mum."
“Good morning, Jason. Do you have plans? ”“Yeah, I'm going into town today to get Ashley a gift. Her birthday party is tomorrow, and I'm invited.”“Oh, okay honey, have fun! ”
Grabbing his jacket, he stepped out of the door to his home, walking on the pavement so he could wait at the bus stop.He spared a moment of thought for his ex girlfriend, Macy, and how she had treated him in their relationship. He had always felt like she had liked him, but he was wrong.
Oh well. The bus came and he got on, standing since there was no sitting room. He got down when the bus rolled to a stop in town and walked over to the luxury shops.
Ashley was a deserving friend, kind and consistent when others had not been, and she deserved a good quality gift from him.
In the first shop he saw, he looked through the windows and saw that they sold dresses. He had no idea what size of dress that Ashley wore, so he couldn't get her a dress. He moved forward and saw that it was mostly dresses being sold in that part of town. He finally decided to step into one for lack of a better idea. Immediately he walked in, he expected a salesperson to come to his attention.Yet, nothing of the sort happened. Quickly, he stepped out, overwhelmed. He had noticed that there was a small number of people in the store from the window, but he hadn't thought much of it and had carelessly walked in.He kept walking until he saw a store that sold women's purses. Purses were safe, right? If he got her a purse, she could use it, and it meant that he didn't have to worry about sizing. He walked into the shop and was immediately ambushed by a salesperson. It seemed like it was a slow business day, and she was excited to have a customer until she looked at him from top till bo
With the sound of the falling bracelet, all of them turned over to look at him, and he quickly bent down to the floor to pick it up. He had hoped that the sound had gone unnoticed in the store, but he knew it was wishful thinking. When he got back up and raised his head back up, he saw that everyone was looking at him, the salesperson, Macy, and the footballer. When they saw him, the young couple started laughing, and he felt color rush into his cheeks. They walked over to him, her hand wrapped in his and poked at his cheek. “Jason? Come on now. You're too poor for this place, what are you looking for? ” The footballer went to stand behind him, and grabbed him by the arm. “Come on, get out. We don't want you stealing anything, do we?” he asked, getting a chorus of no from the women.“I have just as much of a right to be here as you!” he heard himself saying. And it was true. These people didn't know what funds he had, yet they had the gall to treat him like a common thief. He had sta
Macy remained standing in place, her minded wide open and gaping. He would be worried about her, but even in his kindness, he remembered that she was the ex that had broken his heart so brutally a few days before.“You were going to show me your jewelry, right?” he asked the salesgirl, raising a brow. She had gone ahead of him, and was already showing him different things she thought he would like.“Do you like diamonds? Precious stones? I'm sure we could find something special in store for you. Do you have a budget?”At a loss for words, he merely shrugged, choosing to keep browsing. He felt an intense gaze on his skin, and he turned around to find that it was only Macy. Her eyes had softened in a way that they had never softened before, and her eyes had gotten dewy. He felt like she was eyeing him like he was a piece of meat, which made him uncomfortable.“Baby!” she suddenly shrieked, and he looked over to the football player, who was also standing there, expectant. Instead, she w
The manager came back out with the salesgirl, and Jason was overjoyed at the sight of someone else beside the three people in the store. All three of them seemed to have some vendetta against him. She was a lovely looking woman, with short brown hair, and she looked friendly enough.“It's him! That's the thief!”The manager didn't say a word and simply went to the table, picking up the hairpin. “Is this what he stole?”“Yes!”Stole? He had not stolen anything! Why was this happening to him? She set the hairpin down and noticed the other things on the table. She turned sharply to him with a sweat running down her face. “This ring. Is it yours? Oh dear God. I shouldn't have come in to work today.” Jason stood in place, wondering what was going on. He picked up his ring and slipped it on his index finger.“Look, I have already seen enough. I paid for that purse, so if I could just have the box and leave? That would be great. Thank you.He watched the manager blanche white at that sugg
When he got home, his mum seemed to be in a good mood, so he kissed her hello and asked how her day had gone.“Oh, it was okay. I got a call from your father and he seemed Inna dapper mood. I'm assuming he has told you? We're not poor?”“Yeah, he has,” he responded, smiling.“Well that's good, now we don't have to worry and you can quit that god awful job that you have.”“Yeah, that's a plus.”Suddenly remembering something, he tells his mother that he has a party to attend that night with his friends. “It's Ashley's birthday tomorrow, but the party is today. That's what the gift bag is for ”He gestured vaguely at the bag and told her more. “I am going to have to go there because it is the first time I've ever been invited to an event like this.”“Go ahead Jason,” she smiled. “Will you be fine for dinner or should I make you some?”“I'm alright. I have a few hours to kill before the party, should I tell you what happened at the shops?”“I would love that!” she exclaimed, and he told
He went over to the table and set down the gift, noting that it had been an hour and more and more people had shown up to the party. The room was almost full, and he admired the lighting.Someone had gone all out for this party, and he admired their effort. He wondered if it was Ashley herself, then decided against it. They had probably not stressed the birthday girl on her day.Soon she came down the stairs and things went into full swing. The party had poured from the front of the house to the other sides and out on the porch, and kids ran around with punch that he suspected was spiked.Ashley walked up to him and tried to introduce him to her cousin, a girl named Cate. Cate was a pretty girl, and he could admit that himself. She had long blonde hair that she was wearing in a thick braid, and she had angelic blue eyes to match. She looked classy, rich, and he was afraid to say a word to her.Ashley gave him a hard elbow to the side and the words spluttered out of his mouth. “Ow- Hi
“Stop!” yelled Russ. “You can't all possibly be this stupid. This boy cannot afford any of this. He must have stolen it!" A murmur ran out over the crowd, and Jason turned around, stunned. “Those two items look as expensive as all of the other gifts combined. Maybe even ten times more expensive than all of it! Why would you even think this is real?” “What the-” Jason turned around to look at Russ. He had no idea why Russ was telling a lie as grand as that, but he had had it up to his neck. “I didn't steal anything, what's your problem?” “Well, if you didn't steal it, then it's fake.” Ashley was on the stairs with her friends, taking some of her gifts up, so she couldn't defend him, and he knew he couldn't fight all of them off, so he looked over at Macy. She had seen him buying the gifts, she had been in the shop along with her mysterious footballer boyfriend while he made the purchase, surely she would come to his rescue? Apparently not. She looked away and then invited her fo
That week, Jason anticipated every mail delivery that he got, searching for the keys his father had promised to send to him. He had left Ashley's party after wishing her goodbye that first night, and their friendship was flourishing. School was still in session, and although Russ was rude to him, he remained kind and made a few new friends, although he suspected that they were befriending him simply because of his finances. On a Friday, almost a week after the call, he got the keys, tightly wrapped. His mom was downstairs when his package came, and he walked inside the house and handed the package to her after struggling to open it for a while. “Why would dad wrap it so tight?!” he exclaimed, running his hands through his hair.“Well,” responded his mum, using a blade to cut open the pack, “maybe he just wanted it to be safe. Or he shipped it with something else that he didn't want to break. Who knows?”“Nobody but him, I guess. Still it's silly,” laughed Jason, running up the stairs
