Chapter 2: Mayor's party

Scott seemed as if he couldn't perceive the gazes from all directions, or perhaps he could but chose to ignore them, calmly putting food on his plate.

His movements were graceful, leisurely enjoying the delicious dishes.

For Scott, the looks from these people meant nothing at all.

"Oh my, isn't it our dear son-in-law?" At this moment, a somewhat sharp voice rang out.

Scott didn't need to look to know who was speaking.

He lifted his eyes and indeed saw his mother-in-law and his wife coming over.

Since he knew this in advance, Scott didn't show much surprise.

On the contrary, others were astonished to see Scott's mother-in-law, especially when they heard her address him.

Immediately, disdain concealed poorly on their faces.

Mrs. Campbell slowly approached Scott, wearing an air of arrogance, her gaze full of disdain, as if Scott were some kind of trash.

Moving ahead of her was Aboli, his wife.

Just like her name, Aboli was undeniably beautiful.

A face like a flower, large and captivating eyes with a slightly upward slant, a high nose, luscious red lips, and fair skin.

Her facial features were sharp yet not too angular.

Her body was also perfect, with long legs and curves that would make any ordinary girl feel inferior.

Seeing Scott, she seemed slightly surprised, accompanied by a hint of annoyance.

However, her emotions were well-hidden, but Scott could still see through them.

Conversely, Scott didn't feel much like meeting these people again.

At this moment, Mrs. Campbell suddenly spoke, "Scott, I didn't expect you still had the face to return to this city. Why did you suddenly come back? Is life so difficult that you had to come here to ask for money?"

If it were an ordinary person being spoken to like this in front of everyone, they might have been angry and embarrassed, their face turning red.

However, Scott certainly wasn't among those ordinary people.

Even hearing Mrs. Campbell say that he still maintained a stoic expression.

He calmly spoke, "I came back here just to handle some business. At the same time, the anniversary of my grandfather's death is approaching, and I came back to pay my respects to him."

Finishing his words, he put a bite of steak into his mouth, seemingly uninterested in having a serious conversation with Mrs. Campbell.

Mrs. Campbell was genuinely infuriated by Scott's attitude.

He had always been like this before, making people extremely disgusted!

Mrs. Campbell thought bitterly.

She tried to suppress the invisible anger in her heart, mockingly saying, "Returning to pay respects to your father? Did you come back to take advantage and grab a bit of the family fortune?"

Mrs. Campbell even didn't bother to lower her tone while speaking.

Almost the entire banquet hall could hear her shrill voice, and murmurs began to rise.

"That's the son-in-law of the Campbell family, right? The one who got kicked out of the house a year ago?"

"Exactly, what else could it be? I was wondering who would dare to eat in such a grand feast. Turns out, it's the Campbell's son-in-law. Well, that's not surprising at all, ha ha ha."

The sounds of discussions and mockery echoed everywhere.

The Campbell's son-in-law was notorious for being untalented, practically known by almost everyone in the upper class of City A.

Feeling the numerous eyes from various directions, evaluating not only Scott but also their whole group, Aboli couldn't help but furrow her brows a little.

She looked at her mother, wanting to pull her away, and then suddenly a voice rang out.

"How could someone like him be invited to this party? Did the mayor's invitation list get mixed up?"

Almost as soon as that sound echoed, Mrs. Campbell's eyes lit up.

She seemed like a cat that caught a mouse, self-satisfied as she said, "Scott, someone like you surely can't receive an invitation to such a grand party. You must have sneaked in here. I'm right, aren't I?"

Mrs. Campbell thought very clearly; she felt certain that Scott had taken advantage of the title of being the son-in-law of the Campbell family to deceive the security and sneak into this party.

But clearly, he was just a despised son-in-law, not accepted!

Aboli seemed to have thought of something too, her gaze towards Scott showing more annoyance.

Mrs. Campbell, on the other hand, felt she had found the truth of the matter.

She sneered at Scott, speaking in a low voice, "Scott, it's best for you to leave before the security finds out. Being thrown out of this party would be very embarrassing. That would not only affect you but also the honor of our Campbell family!"

The words of Mrs. Campbell are truly filled with disdain and offense.

Furthermore, they haven't even clarified whether Scott really intruded or not before speaking like that, which is really unreasonable.

Aboli couldn't help but furrow her brows slightly.

Although she didn't like Scott, she even found his presence annoying. On paper, he was still her husband.

Aboli couldn't help but pull her mother's arm, speaking in a low voice, "Mom, that's enough. Anyway, he's still part of our family."

Mrs. Campbell couldn't help but narrow her eyes at her daughter, expressing regret, "Do you still have feelings for him?"

Aboli frowned, shaking her head, "I don't have feelings for him anymore, but that's irrelevant to this. Speaking out like this will only damage the Campbell family's reputation."

Upon hearing this, Mrs. Campbell couldn't help but tighten her brows, clearly dissatisfied.

She glared at her daughter a bit and said, "Don't get involved in this. Just stay silent."

Aboli furrowed her brows tightly, her eyes showing a bit of depth, but she didn't say anything more.

While officially Scott was still her husband, it wasn't to the extent that she would confront her mother fiercely.

At this point, the eyes of the other guests looking at Scott were changing, even more contemptuous than before.

A husband allowing his wife to speak up for him, how incompetent can one be?

Truly deserving of contempt!

Those people had every right to think so, and the murmurs echoed as if they were letting Scott hear it.

Mrs. Campbell sensed the general thoughts of the crowd and couldn't help but smirk.

Scott deserved to be treated like this, and it would be best if he couldn't bear it and left the city of A that very night!

Thinking so, Mrs. Campbell continued, "Scott, still not willing to leave? Or do you want me to call security? By then, you won't have any dignity left."

Pausing for a moment, she sneered, "Oh, I forgot, daring to sneak into such a grand party, your self-respect probably isn't much to begin with, not to mention caring about dignity."

Mrs. Campbell said so bitterly.

The surrounding crowd immediately burst into laughter, surrounding Scott, waiting for him to be embarrassed.

Yet, Scott just slowly put down his knife and fork.

While they spoke, he had finished the small bite of steak.

Now, he took a napkin from the side and politely wiped his mouth, showing no signs of being bothered at all.

As if their words were just the buzzing of flies and mosquitoes.

Mrs. Campbell was so angry that her eyes bulged, her face turning red.

She angrily continued, "Scott, don't you understand..."

But before she could finish, Scott spoke up, "I was invited by the mayor, didn't you know? Now you can leave."

The crowd was stunned by Scott's words.

Clearly, his voice wasn't loud, but it was distinct and reached the ears of everyone.
