Aren't You Supposed To Be Dead?

"Young man, are you going to make this easy or hard?" one of the officers bellowed at Adam.

"You aren't even going to hear my side of the story?" Adam gritted. "There's proof that I didn't bring anything into this mall!"

He faced the old man. "Please tell them what happened."

The shop-keeper's face paled, he quickly sent a pleading look at the man, flashing some dollar bills but the man was unperturbed.

"I came into this shop to buy some Purple Bex for my daughter's fever, I only had 40 dollars so he refused to give me the herb unless I handed him my ancestral pendant."

"What?" Everyone gasped.

"I can swear that the herb was brought by his assistant! I'd barely left when this young man came in. The fake herb had been in the mall all along."

"You!" the shop-keeper's chubby fingers pointed at the old man in anger.

Adam waved the assistant over. "Tell them, was I the one that brought this herb or it had been here all along?"

The boy stared at the shop-keeper in contempt. "This man has been defrauding people with take herbs for a long time. He gets barks and roots of trees as waste from Indian farmers and place them into containers, decorating them like real herbs!"

Adam nodded, satisfied. It seemed he wasn't the only one disgusted at the shop-keeper's wickedness.

"How dare you lie against me, Jude?" The shopkeeper tried to attack him, but Adam grabbed his wrist and twisted. "After ruining my shop's reputation, you still have the guts to accuse me of being a thief!"

"Leave this place while I'm still being nice! If Madam Lori hears of this-ah!" he screamed in pain. "I'll make sure she doesn't let you off!"

"I won't be letting you off either!" Adam pushed him violently.

All the staffs had gathered, so he faced them. "Who else would like to tell the truth?"

The 5 of them frowned.

"Who do you think you are to barge in here and order us?" A man among them shouted.

"Isn't he trying to uncover the truth?" A middle aged woman spoke up. "This fraud the Manager has been committing has costed several lives. Have some conscience, all of you!"

"Go ahead and talk, Eunice. But get ready to lose your job! Just don't drag us into it." others snapped back at her.

Eunice stepped forward with determination and recounted all what Jude just said, explaining how the Manager ends up scamming naive people of more money.

"So this shopkeeper has been extorting us with harmful herbs?" The crowd gasped.

"I bought some Blue Gel to curb high fever a month ago, and despite all my efforts, I lost my mother!" A tall man dashed out of the crowd to grab the shop-keeper's collar. "You bastard! You took 500 dollars from me for a fake herb? Now my mother is dead!"

Like that, everyone started coming out and recounting their past woes with the Hundred Herb Mall.

"Burn this place down! It doesn't deserve to be called a Herb Mall for placing our lives in danger!"

"Arrest all of them!"

"Please, ladies and gentlemen..." Adam raised his voice above the uproar, trying to calm them down.

"You see what you caused? What do you stand to gain if the mall is demolished?" the shopkeeper was insistent on blaming Adam.

"Listen everyone!" Adam ignored him. "As the legal owner of this shop, I promise to compensate you for every loss you've encountered!"

"Owner? When did you become the owner?" the shop-keeper sneered mockingly.

Adam slammed the deed of ownership on the table. "Take a look!"

Several people scurried over to check. "He's truly is the owner of this mall!"

"Check it out." Adam handed it to the officers as well.

"I sincerely apologize for the turn of events today." He bowed deeply to everyone. "To each person that has bought a fake herb and been defrauded a large sum of money, please accept my apologizes. I promise to compensate you properly!"

"As for this evil man, he was placed here by Lori Hemsworth to wreck my shop! Take him away!"

"You wouldn't dare!" the shopkeeper yelled. "Adam is a terrible liar, what if he forged the government signature?"

The officers grabbed his hands, placing him on handcuffs.

"If you dare to touch me, Madam Lori would never let you off! The Hemsworths family have affiliations with the governor of this state. You're getting yourself into trouble!"

"You're nothing but a useless son-in-law. How dare you act come here acting all arrogant? I'll make sure you end up behind bars!" the shopkeeper kept struggling as the officers dragged him away.

Adam summoned all the staffs. "From today henceforth, you're all fired!"

"Sir, please-" the man that berated him earlier fell on his knees.

"Except the people that chose to stand by the truth." Adam gestured at Jude and Eunice. "The rest of you can get your severance letter and your salary for the days you've worked."

Adam handed the situation to Eunice, ignoring their incessant pleas.

He returned to face the crowd. "You will all form a straight line, then write down the herb you bought and how much was extorted from you with evidence of the corresponding receipt. You will receive a call when the original herb is available."

Beams of smile covered everyone's face. "Thank you so much, Mr Carson. Only a true and upright person would care about customers health."

"It is very obvious that you care about your mall's reputation."

"You're the only one that cares about the welfare of the people. Every time I come here, the staffs are always rude, especially to old people like me." An old woman with walking stick said from the side of the crowd.

"I apologize for the past mistakes, ma'am." Adam walked forward to to help her to a seat.

As she sat, he noticed a black scarred discoloration on her upper arm. "What happened here?"

"I've been a factory worker for a long time. Once, a flamable acid spilled on my arm, and since then this discoloration has been spreading."

Adam inspected the arm properly.

It was bone decay triggered by corrosive liquid. The old woman must be feeling very severe pains, for the injury to have gotten to this stage.

"Come with me." He urged her into an inner room, pulling out a seat for her. "How long have you been treating it?"

"Your shopkeeper sold a lot of fake herbs to me which made the scar get worse and worse."

Adam nodded. "I'm sorry about that, I'll try my best to compensate by treating it."

Adam pricked the scar, drawing out all the pus and fluid accumulated there. He secretly focused his divine powers to heal and regenerate new cells. That way it wouldn't take too long for her to heal.

The old woman left with a huge smile on her face, thanking him profusely.

By the time he was done, Jude had taken care of the crowd and everyone had dispersed.

"The mall is going to be closed for three days, to give us time to sort through all the available herbs, get rid of the fake and re-stock with new ones!"

"I'll also need you to set up an appointment office, where I can give special treatments to patients."

After giving extra instructions, Adam finally left the mall.

He trusted that with Eunice and Jude helping, his Hundred Herb Mall would return to it's reputation in a short period.

He took a taxi straight to the Hemsworths' mansion, alighting in front of the gates.

The last time he was here, he'd been kicked out brutally and left to die like a dog. They probably think he was dead by now.

"Breathe." Adam calmed himself.

He'll get his revenge some other day. First, he needed to get to his garden and see if the King Lotus he had been cultivating was still there.

When a car drove in, Adam sneaked past the guards at the gate. Using the tall lawn grasses as cover, he discreetly made his way to the back of the mansion.

To his chagrin, the garden was in an absolute mess!

All his precious herbs had been uprooted violently, scattered in the mud.

He spotted the King Lotus some distance away. The herb had been crushed- pot and all.

Adam clenched his fists so hard it bled. Who dared to ruin his garden like this?

"Well, well. If it's not the good-for-nothing Adam Carson." A screeching feminine voice suddenly came from behind him. "Wait, aren't you supposed to be dead?"
