“Depending on your mastery and needs, most offer five levels of training. The order has an established rate while the Counsel of elders affords full time soldiers a training stipend. 500 Dret for the first level training is the going rate for Silverbloods not contracted with the army. Some students need to repeat that several times to pass.”
Desmond eyed her knowingly, “Everything costs. But we will address your needs soon. Now, each successive level of training costs an additional 500 dret. So level two is 1000 dret, level three is 1500 and so on. All told, in order to master all of the trades, one must have substantial funds. Most of the soldiery only get one level paid for by the council, and more based on their rank. On that note, come with me.”
Desmond led her to a long hallway and around a corner where the walls began to shift to metal panels. As she walked, Val notices strange blue veins in the metal that glowed, illuminating the hall.
“The ancients left these bases. The technology is far beyond us, but the silverbloods have been able to get some of it working and it has allowed us to make huge strides in science, technology, and so much more. Ah here we are,” Desmond said, pointing to a thin man with sandy blonde hair, very pale complexion as if he had not seen the light of day in years.
The man wore a pair of thick spectacles on his angular nose. Val was curious because she had never seen such things before.
“What are you wearing?” she asked.
The man looked up from his notes and scoffed at Val before noticing Desmond. “Ah, you have returned. Any goods for me?” the man’s tone was very excited once he noticed Desmond.
Desmond chuckled. “Perhaps a few things. But I also brought back a new scavenger for you!” he pushed Val forward before saying, “This is Valkyrie. She is a Spark Vessel so treat her accordingly.”
The man’s face lit up, “Ah, I see. Now tell me young one, you come from the streets right? Rare a silverblood is found outside Suria these days.”
“Well, I was living there for a while…”
“Good, good. My name is Lorenzo. May I ask? Have you encountered the Shadows?” he asked rubbing his hands together.
“Many.”
“Do you know what this is?” the man held up a quartz crystal.
“A storage crystal!” Val said excitedly. The crystal was only two inches long but it would be a great addition to her stash.
“Perfect! Now I am guessing you know what they do then. If I provide you with crystals for a reasonable price, think you can collect Scaths for me? They power so much of this place.”
“Scath?”
Lorenzo glanced at Desmond who shrugged and replied, “She calls them Shadows. She is young, roll with it.”
Val’s eyes lit up as she realized what they were talking about. “How much for a filled crystal?”
The merchant chuckled, “Smart one.” He glanced at Desmond, “She knows the right questions to ask! Val, was it? These things are more potent than most know. Only the silverbloods with a spark and a runed blade can capture them in this usable form.”
“I ask all the Hunters to being me back as much as they can. I will pay 50 drets for each hatchling or wrath Scath. As for your cost, we mine these quartz regularly enough so an empty one is only going to cost you ten dret. Fill them, and we will both be rich!”
Val beamed and was about to dig out coins when Desmond spoke up, “We can come back later. There are no Shadows here in the mountains, so no need to rush. Lorenzo, treat this girl fair you hear? I will be back later to do some trading, and Val will be staying with us for a while. I am sure she will find her way back.”
Desmond pulled her away and down another long hall. “Lorenzo is a good one but don’t be afraid to haggle with him.”
“Will he really give me 50 dret for a filled crystal? I have six more with me!” Val said excitedly, doing the math. She could likely train with ten masters for that price.
Desmond chuckled. There are very few hunter sparks who can get him filled crystals. I bet if you haggle with him, you can get double that or more. When you master your skills, you can ask him about diamond crystals or any specialty stones he has. They will cost more but also might hold some of the more powerful Shadow’s. they will be worth more.”
“The order only has a handful of sparks out here. Most live within the mainland of Suria, protected by the mountains. Most of the rest of the people here are assassins, mercenaries, master merchants, and other skills that honor the ancients with their unique talents. They are loyal to a fault to the ancients and the Sparks they left behind.”
“Understand that all Surians naturally have some level of silverblood, but some of the lower classes have diluted over time. Those with Sparks are considered the upper class, but even that varies depending on the power of the Spark. Some are very basic and are limited to a single skillset such as the craftsmen.” Desmond explained.
Desmond stopped by a door and pointed. “This is you. It was your mother’s room when she first arrived. So long as you are here, this can be yours. If you leave on trips or missions, no one will disturb your things here. Once you ascend to the next level of the training rooms, you have the right to claim a room on those floors if you like. Each floor adds a bit of security.”
“Is there a key?” Val didn’t see a keyhole or even a door handle.
“Press here” Desmond indicated a blue orb inset in the wall to the right of the door.
As Val’s hand connected, she heard in her mind, “Welcome home, Dark Angel.” As the door slid open, Val walked into a small room that was sparsely decorated. There was a large window that looked out over the forest and grassy glen in the secluded valley.
“I will give you some time. I need to go visit with the Prior. When you are done, meet me in the training hall. I still have a few more things to show you.”
“Am I allowed to wander?” Val asked hesitantly.
“Cautiously. This is the Order of Spark’s outpost, not the mainlands of Suria, and most do not know your status. Should you reveal it, some will not accept based on your size and age unless you can command your sigil to come forth. That is not something we do lightly in common society. Some weaker spark bearers have been killed, and their spark harvested for the black market,” Desmond turned then, leaving Val to explore her mother’s room.
A chill ran up her spine as she thought of someone digging in her neck.
As she walked around the tiny room, she wondered how long her mother had lived here. There seemed to be very little of her mother in the room except for a small book on the nightstand. She cracked it open and began to read.
After a few pages about how she first came to the Order and how she was eventually honored as the guardian of a sleeping Spark artifact, she described hours of training with various masters. Val was amazed at what her mother had accomplished. Near the back of the diary, Celeana had a series of entries listing missions she had completed, payouts, and also a number of projects she had invested in through the Order. The dates ended twelve years ago. Just two years before Val was born. Val marveled at all her mother had invested and wondered what had become of her mother’s legacy.
It seemed her mother had led a very basic life, investing everything back in the order and future projects. That was when she noted a small message in the back of the book.
“I finally made it to the third level. The order has deemed that I am worthy of training to be a spark bearer as I am one of the few unclassed members here to achieve this third level without having a spark of my own. Most are happy on the first level! The rooms up there are definitely worthy of consideration. Perhaps I will keep both rooms so I don’t always have to complete such an insane path just to find my bed.”

Val closed the notebook and stood. She wondered if Desmond would be done yet and decided to make her way back to the training hall. As she walked, trailing a hand along the blue lines in the walls, the color brightened and shimmered, giving her a sense of being home. When she arrived at the hall she noticed several people milling around a large table. She made her way over and found a huge 3D model of the world. “Can I help you?” a woman asked. Val spun to find a thin lady not much taller than herself with long brown hair braided down her back. “I am waiting on Desmond.” “Ah, then you must be Desmonds little pet project the whole place has been talking about,” she said, considering Val and taking in her appearance. The lady then pointed to the large table before her and asked, “Do you know what this is?” “Not really. I guess it is Parcia?” “Close,” she chuckled, “This is all nine realms. The world is much larger than you think. I am Lauren Brennen, the missions and investment man
Val soon found herself in a maze of false buildings and makeshift allies. She quickly found herself a dark shadow to hide in along a roof top along the main passage. Here, she didn’t need to worry about passerby’s seeing her, only focusing on Desmond. Shortly, she could feel his presence enter the street and approach her hiding spot. When he had just passed beneath her, Val flipped soundlessly off the roof and sent a lightning-fast thrust at Desmond’s back. Her blade flowed seamlessly as she made her slash with her dagger just as she had done with countless Shadows. Her signature move was a seamless stroke through the chest and back across the neck. However, her blade didn’t complete the motion she had hoped and the next thing she knew, a fist connected with her temple, followed by a spinning kick to her neck that sent her sailing across the ground, tumbling like a limp rag doll. When light finally broke through the black of her mind and vision, Desmond was towering over her. Des
Valkyrie Black, Age 12 Valkyrie wandered the valley one morning before her lesions would start. Being that it was mostly only the enlisted soldiers performing continuing training here until the next cohort of students arrived, the various masters tended to not want to meet with her until later in the morning. Val was still up with the first rays of sunshine, so she filled her free time with exploring every inch of the fortress she could reach. While the grand hall’s mastery challenge eluded her, there were few other places a curious twelve-year-old couldn’t reach. She had yet to be permitted into Suria, but the pass through the mountains was riddled with caves worth exploring. There was a particular path that Val was keen to check out today. She slipped past the sentries and made her way into the second cave on the left. To most people, this was a very shallow cave with nothing interesting. However, Valkyrie’s thin frame allowed her to check out some interesting formations in the
Val saw another flash of red in her vision and leaned back, narrowly dodging another stone thrown her direction. It was followed by a flurry of small stones thrown at various speeds. The last one she reached out a hand and caught, spinning her body to absorb the impact and hurled the stone back at her attacker.Morgessa grinned, dodging the stone with the barest of movements. “Now you are learning. Never let an attack go to waste when you can use it against your attacker. I think you might do well with us. What do you say? Train with me and my students?”Val considered for a minute. She was already spending a small fortune with the other trainers. “What will it cost?”Morgessa chuckled, “Desmond was right about you, you are sharp. I don’t require coin for my training. What I do require is Scath plasma. There are many things a Spark Blessed can use Scath plasma for. Even this cave is guarded by a Scath lock that requires plasma to open. Not a full unit mind you, but one crystal might o
A month later, a messenger found Valkyrie as she was finishing training with the fortress dagger master. She thanked the boy who was not much younger than herself and tore open the letter. Meet me at eleven hour in the cave where we first spoke. M Morgessa. Val knew of no one else who would summon her in such a way. She thanked her instructor and performed the customary fist-to-heart salute the soldiers all used for those of rank before heading towards the cave she had entered before. While she knew where the entrance was deep in the catacombs under the fortress, that passage required the sacrifice of a Scath to enter. As she slid unseen into the dark cave, her vision adjusted as it had before, with the cold of the walls contrasting only slightly with the cool air. She made her way to the larger cave with the magma pool and spotted Morgessa’s heat signature at the base of the rise she emerged on. she slid over the edge and dropped to the ground, kneeling head bowed on one knee bef
The next week, Val found herself sneaking away from her friends at dusk to meet with Morgessa. The passage through the caves had quickly become second nature, though there were many areas left to explore. Morgessa had not stopped her curiosity, but cautioned her to never go deeper into the caves without chalk and string. She warned that more than one foolish youth had been lost in various cave systems after losing track of time, and direction, not to be found until several days or weeks later. When she made it to the magma room, Morgessa was waiting.“Come, today I teach you the first level of Spark Meditation. Desmond likely would have liked to lead you through this, but he doesn’t have the time nor the depth of mastery to unlock your full potential.”“Spark Meditation?”Morgessa frowned at Val, “Girl, tell me. How have you been leveling your spark? I can tell that you clearly have but without the meditation how have you achieved this?”“Umm… well the runes just appear and normally w
There was a long pause, “there shouldn’t be anyone. That must be part of your imagination. This is a vivid dream state.”Val thought Morgessa didn’t sound as sure as she had about everything else.“Child look to the sky. Tell me what you see.”Val did as she was told, the older man seemed content to watch and wait his turn. Above, the stars opened up before her and then rushed impossibly close. Constellations stood out in her vision, lines connecting some of the bright stars, others remaining incomplete.“Constellations?” Val asked hesitantly.“Indeed, child. This is where you can better see and plan how you can advance your spark. Each constellation is a series of skills that build on each other. Observe which ones you have already activated.”Val looked all around. Most of her skills had at least one star that was brighter than the rest, seeming to indicate activation. Her climbing and basic combat skills had several stars connected, and even her barter skills had shown some improve
Valkyrie Black Age 13 The next years flew by as Val trained with a new master each day. Thanks to the funds her mother had left, as well as Desmond’s contribution, she was easily able to pay for and complete five levels of mastery in almost everything she trained in. Her spark become an intricate part of her being, and she relied on it as second nature. Some of her favorite skills were stealth, parkour, and rock climbing. As she scaled the cliffs around the fortress, she could lose herself in the challenge of finding the next hand hold and pushing her limits. Each morning, she would leave her room, and pass through the training hall. On her first day, Desmond had pointed the ceiling out, stating there were five levels to climb. What she had failed to realize was that the landings she could see were not the levels, but actually all part of the first ascension. Each mini-landing would have additional challenges to overcome, the first of which was a rope that would drop once you reached
