Valkyrie Black, Age 12
Valkyrie wandered the valley one morning before her lesions would start. Being that it was mostly only the enlisted soldiers performing continuing training here until the next cohort of students arrived, the various masters tended to not want to meet with her until later in the morning.
Val was still up with the first rays of sunshine, so she filled her free time with exploring every inch of the fortress she could reach. While the grand hall’s mastery challenge eluded her, there were few other places a curious twelve-year-old couldn’t reach.
She had yet to be permitted into Suria, but the pass through the mountains was riddled with caves worth exploring. There was a particular path that Val was keen to check out today.
She slipped past the sentries and made her way into the second cave on the left. To most people, this was a very shallow cave with nothing interesting. However, Valkyrie’s thin frame allowed her to check out some interesting formations in the back. There was a narrow passageway that in order to enter one had to lay on their back, extend both arms and shoulders above their head and then pull their body through.
Val wondered if she ate too much one day, if she would get stuck attempting such a passage.
She shimmied through the tight opening and pulled herself up into a pitch-black opening. Val sat in the cool air, focusing her senses. Here, beyond the reach of any light and beyond the sound of the world, absolute silence set in. As she strained her senses, she began to detect the slow drip of water far on the other side of the cave.
Even her own heartbeat sounded loud in the silence of the cave.
[Eyesight impaired. Enhance eyesight?]
The dialog intrigued Valkyrie. Would she be able to see in this total darkness?

[ Activate Thermal vision? ]
[Yes]
Val thought she could actually hear the plasma leave one of her crystals before her vision began to shift. At first, all she saw was pitch black, but slowly the cave walls became visible. While everything was still dark and mostly black, there were now shades to the world. She could faintly make out the edges of the wall beside her and she stood, wanting to explore her new domain.
She slowly followed the edge of the wall, being careful of her footing. While her strange new vision let her see some in the pitch black, the floor was uneven and full of small stone growths and deep holes looked like black abysses. As she approached the far wall, her vision began to shift to a light orange as the air in that direction warmed.
She followed the changing air temperatures and found a split in the rock wall just large enough for her to slide through sideways. The slit curved and continued on for almost fifty feet before opening into another open cave. The air here was notably warmer than the cold cave walls providing a stronger contrast for her new vision.
Val froze when she heard the faint sound of voices. Is someone else down here? Where does this cave lead?
She found a passage that slopped downward and followed the curve of the wall until it came to an outcropping that looked down on a huge room. Below, there was a pit of molten lava surrounded by a wide flat area. To Val’s vision, the waves of heat lazily wafted into the air. The magma was blindingly hot, Val had to shield her eyes and look for something cooler to focus her vision on.
It was then that the clash of weapons caught her attention again and she looked to the right side of the room. There was a shaft in the ceiling where cold air was pouring into the room above where three figures could be seen locked in combat. Their bodies gave off a fierce white glow of heat such that Val guessed they had been training for hours in this room.
Two of the figures worked in tandem to attach a third. Around and around the circled, one with twin daggers, the other a long sword. As they attacked, their opponent spun what appeared to be a long staff, fending off the dual attacks with seeming ease.
“Again!” Cracked the husky voice of a mature female. The voice reminded Valkyrie of one of the merchant wives Firm, and full of the authority needed to command a caravan full of men.
The two students renewed their attack but their instructor swept her staff at their legs, tripping one, and eliciting a scream of pain from the other. From the bass notes of the voice and choice of curses, Val guessed that one was a male, likely in his teen years. She quickly ran through a list of youth she was aware of at the fort. The only ones currently present were a teen boy named Cade, and a girl named Alexa.
The rest of the occupants were soldiers in their twenties or older. She wondered why these youths would be getting special training down in the caves.
Suddenly the instructor spun in her direction and Val saw red flash in her vision as an object was hurled in her direction. She was far enough away that she had a full second to roll out of the way as a clod of mud sailed past her face and exploded on the wall behind her.
“Come down from there. If you have the skill to find this place on your own, you likely possess the skills to join in training. My pupils likely can learn a thing or two from one as stealthy as you.”
Val heard a gasp from the girl as she stood. Apparently, the instructor had been the only one who had detected her. Val looked at the stone around her and found a spot she could hang from and drop to a lower level before scampering over a few ledges to reach the smooth landing the trio was using as a training ground.
The instructor was a lady Val didn’t recognize. She appeared to be in her fifties, with silver hair similar to Val’s own. She stood around five foot eight with a lean figure that hid the strength Val had seen clearly demonstrated. This was not a woman to underestimate.
“Silver hair… you must be Valkyrie, Desmond’s little find. I suppose if you found this place on your own, some of what he told me must be true.”
“You know me, mistress. But I am afraid Desmond never mentioned you.” Val returned.
“Rightfully so. My name is not one for him to share. I am Morgessa. I only train the best.”
“Mistress, what is it you teach? I see many soldiers above trained in swords, staffs, and daggers. They also train in pistols and other weapons.”
Morgessa let out a scoff. “They train in basics. Here, in the depths of the sacred mountains, I train to be elite. Here in the heat of the earth, in the darkness of the deep embrace, in the silence of the deeps I train. Those who learn from me will be silent warriors with no limitations of light, no weakness when faced with climate, and will show no mercy. Do you think you have what it takes to be a silent shadow warrior?”
“I have already faced the Shadows. The Scath produce no fear in me.” Val replied confidently.
“Then you do not understand your enemy. Even the great one hundred feared the Scath. There would not have been a hundred-year war if there was nothing to fear for a mere twelve-year-old. From what Desmond told me you have only ever faced the Scath Wraiths. You have never truly faced a Thrasher, let alone one of their Princes. There is far more darkness in this world than your young mind can fathom.”
Val saw another flash of red in her vision and leaned back, narrowly dodging another stone thrown her direction. It was followed by a flurry of small stones thrown at various speeds. The last one she reached out a hand and caught, spinning her body to absorb the impact and hurled the stone back at her attacker.Morgessa grinned, dodging the stone with the barest of movements. “Now you are learning. Never let an attack go to waste when you can use it against your attacker. I think you might do well with us. What do you say? Train with me and my students?”Val considered for a minute. She was already spending a small fortune with the other trainers. “What will it cost?”Morgessa chuckled, “Desmond was right about you, you are sharp. I don’t require coin for my training. What I do require is Scath plasma. There are many things a Spark Blessed can use Scath plasma for. Even this cave is guarded by a Scath lock that requires plasma to open. Not a full unit mind you, but one crystal might o
A month later, a messenger found Valkyrie as she was finishing training with the fortress dagger master. She thanked the boy who was not much younger than herself and tore open the letter. Meet me at eleven hour in the cave where we first spoke. M Morgessa. Val knew of no one else who would summon her in such a way. She thanked her instructor and performed the customary fist-to-heart salute the soldiers all used for those of rank before heading towards the cave she had entered before. While she knew where the entrance was deep in the catacombs under the fortress, that passage required the sacrifice of a Scath to enter. As she slid unseen into the dark cave, her vision adjusted as it had before, with the cold of the walls contrasting only slightly with the cool air. She made her way to the larger cave with the magma pool and spotted Morgessa’s heat signature at the base of the rise she emerged on. she slid over the edge and dropped to the ground, kneeling head bowed on one knee bef
The next week, Val found herself sneaking away from her friends at dusk to meet with Morgessa. The passage through the caves had quickly become second nature, though there were many areas left to explore. Morgessa had not stopped her curiosity, but cautioned her to never go deeper into the caves without chalk and string. She warned that more than one foolish youth had been lost in various cave systems after losing track of time, and direction, not to be found until several days or weeks later. When she made it to the magma room, Morgessa was waiting.“Come, today I teach you the first level of Spark Meditation. Desmond likely would have liked to lead you through this, but he doesn’t have the time nor the depth of mastery to unlock your full potential.”“Spark Meditation?”Morgessa frowned at Val, “Girl, tell me. How have you been leveling your spark? I can tell that you clearly have but without the meditation how have you achieved this?”“Umm… well the runes just appear and normally w
There was a long pause, “there shouldn’t be anyone. That must be part of your imagination. This is a vivid dream state.”Val thought Morgessa didn’t sound as sure as she had about everything else.“Child look to the sky. Tell me what you see.”Val did as she was told, the older man seemed content to watch and wait his turn. Above, the stars opened up before her and then rushed impossibly close. Constellations stood out in her vision, lines connecting some of the bright stars, others remaining incomplete.“Constellations?” Val asked hesitantly.“Indeed, child. This is where you can better see and plan how you can advance your spark. Each constellation is a series of skills that build on each other. Observe which ones you have already activated.”Val looked all around. Most of her skills had at least one star that was brighter than the rest, seeming to indicate activation. Her climbing and basic combat skills had several stars connected, and even her barter skills had shown some improve
Valkyrie Black Age 13 The next years flew by as Val trained with a new master each day. Thanks to the funds her mother had left, as well as Desmond’s contribution, she was easily able to pay for and complete five levels of mastery in almost everything she trained in. Her spark become an intricate part of her being, and she relied on it as second nature. Some of her favorite skills were stealth, parkour, and rock climbing. As she scaled the cliffs around the fortress, she could lose herself in the challenge of finding the next hand hold and pushing her limits. Each morning, she would leave her room, and pass through the training hall. On her first day, Desmond had pointed the ceiling out, stating there were five levels to climb. What she had failed to realize was that the landings she could see were not the levels, but actually all part of the first ascension. Each mini-landing would have additional challenges to overcome, the first of which was a rope that would drop once you reached

The teacher was droning on about world politics and how anyone who wanted to do anything in the world needed to be versed in how the world worked. “Val, do you have anything to contribute?” Val snapped out of her momentary daze and squinted at the teacher. “To what exactly?” “How to handle a business transaction when the other party is refusing to negotiate. How would you convince them to meet at the negotia
Val saw a hulk of a man bound and gagged on the ground, Morgessa’s familiar features standing over him. The lady was a beast in her own right. She towered over the other women in the fortress. Her brown hair was hidden in the dark of this room, but Val imagined it was likely braided back in its customary tight weaves down her back. “Hurry up you two. The soon-to-be dead don’t have all day. Now, as we have been practicing, your goal is no blood. In some missions, blood is good, in others you need to get out unscathed and unseen. That is best if you are not covered in blood.” “Will he be bound?” Alexa asked hesitantly, eyeing the large man. Morgessa’s teeth shone as she smiled, “Now why would I give you such an easy mission? You have both passed basic competencies. I am sure if you found a bound and gagged man you would have no issue. No, this one is special.” Val frowned before asking the obvious question, “His crimes?” Morgessa’s face soured, “This trash is convicted by the 9 cour
(Age 16) Blades clacked in rhythmic cadence as Val met every blow of her opponent. Asura was several inches taller than her and had filled out with a strong soldiers build. It made sense, with his father being captain of the guard to the High Counsel of Suria. He slammed his sword down again and again, attempting to pummel Valkyrie into submission. Val belatedly thought to herself that she might have overestimated her own ability or underestimated Asure. He had a powerful attack and if he inherited his father’s warrior Spark, he would make an amazing spark vessel. That is, if he ever grew out of his arrogant personality. Val caught another blow, doing her best to sheer the force to the side with her blade. Damn, he is strong. Every muscle fiber strained and she could feel the fibers of her spark working to reinforce her as Asure reversed his momentum and swept at her legs. His blade was longer than her twin long daggers, so it was nearly impossible to close with him. Fighting wa
