Betrayal

After conversing with his grandmother in the sitting room, she told him to follow her upstairs. Granny led the way while he tailed behind. With her walking stick, she was still agile.

Both climbed the staircase and another route after that. Finally, they arrived at the room. Granny opened the door, gesturing to him to follow her inside.

Adrain was left dumbfounded by the beauty of the room.

"Don't let me this is my room" he uttered in disbelief, staring at the king-size bed that was placed at the center. The room was painted white, with a few touches of blue.

"Don't you like the color, I'll ask them to repaint it immediately. I chose this room for you since it's the biggest in the entire building" Granny responded calmly.

"Oh no! I love it! It's far bigger than the entire orphanage! This is so huge" he kept smiling and wouldn't stop admiring the room.

Granny walked in another direction, but still inside the room, and pressed a button. The door opened slowly, revealing what looked like a wardrobe but was bigger than one. Different clothes were neatly arranged, coupled with shoes and male accessories like shades, wrist watches, and others.

"I made sure to order the clothes from Angela Dickson, an American top designer, and those accessories were originally made for you. I hope you will like them. Also, don't hesitate to tell me if you need any changes" Granny added, leaving Adrain speechless.

If he has been told that his status is gonna change in a blink of an eye, he wouldn't believe it. He was embarrassed and making jokes, a few minutes ago and now, he has turned into a trillionaire.

"Thank you so much grandma, I so much love all these. I can't believe I own all these, or am I still dreaming? Maybe it's my wish but if this is a dream, I'll prefer not to wake up" he said dramatically but happily.

Granny gave me a small knock on his forehead.

"You ain't dreaming Aiden, your status has changed from poor to rich," she told him.

Adrain went mute and his mood changed. Granny noticed this and immediately dragged him to sit on a sofa together with her.

"What's the problem? Tell me and I'll have it sorted out for you" she asked.

"I'd like to stay at the school hostel till I graduate. Staying there will make me focus on my education more since I'm left with examinations only. I don't wanna get carried away with all this wealth and allow my years of sacrifice to be in vain" he said slowly, hoping his granny would accept that.

"Your examination is just four weeks right? It'll allow you to stay there if that's what you want but please, try to come home every weekend. You have a lot to learn about the family business and your inauguration is coming immediately after your examination" She accepted, though wasn't pleased but since what he wanted, she was left with no other choice.

"Here is your card and the pin is your date of birth. Feel free to change the pin anytime you feel like" Granny handed a golden color card to him.

"What's used for grandma, I've seen cards people but rich people used black cards. This one is different, is there anything special attached to it?" He questions, checking the card over again.

"It was specially designed for some people, in which our family is among. We have just five of the cards in this country. Feel free to use it and if you mistakenly lost it, you have nothing to worry about, nobody else can use it except you" she explained.

Adrain thanked her before asking for permission to go out. In his words, there was someone he was going to visit. Even though Grandma offered to take Rohan along with him, he bluntly refused.

He excitedly left the house.  He was going to his part-time job to share the good news with his boss and to also inform him that he is no longer coming to work.

He stopped a taxi and hopped in. After one hour's drive, the taxi stopped in front of a chicken shop. He paid the taxi man and left to go inside.

"Good afternoon Mr Adam" he greeted but Mr Adam chose not to reply to him.

"I'm sorry for coming late but something happened. Let me help you with that" he moved to collect the serving tray from him and to serve the customer but Mr. Adam pushed him and he fell on his butt.

Suddenly, he began to hear giggles from the other side of the shop. Despite the pain, he managed to get back on his feet.

He wasn't concerned about the laugh but why would Mr. Adam push him? He tried to think but couldn't recall if they had any misunderstanding the last time he came to work.

"What did I do, Mr. Adam?" He inquired.

"What kind of silly question is that? Isn't it obvious? Your service is no longer needed! I've been wondering why I'm losing customers these days, unknowingly that the reason is you" he fired at Adrian, who was still shocked with the sudden changes.

"How am I of reason? I've told you times without number that reducing the hours of chicken marinating may cause a loss in taste and thereby decrease our customers. Whereas, the last time I checked, we didn't lose customers or is there anything I'm not getting right?" He asked, trying to think of what may happen.

Mr. Adam shoot him a disdain looks before he continued

"Why will you notice that when you are so dumb? You are the problem, not the chicken marinating process. If not for my new customers that came today and complained bitterly about you, how would I know? Let today be your last day in my shop, else, I'll call the cops on you" Mr. Adam threatened.

Adrain stared at the direction he pointed to and he was stunned by the so-called new customers.

"Matilda, do you need to come this far? I've left you with your new boyfriend and you think that isn't enough?" Adrain complained bitterly, though he came to tender his resignation letter and wasn't expecting such drama.

"I'll make sure you go farther than this, if possible. Ain't you the reason for losing customers? Who would wanna eat in a chicken shop where the server is a cursed orphan that was born to lose? The students were busy talking about the moments we spent together mockingly. They even blamed me for allowing you to stay from the beginning. Do you think I'll let that go without retaliating? Hell no! I regretted crossing paths with you, dumbass!" She spat on his face.

Adrain was hurt beyond explanation. If he hadn't met his granny, this was how Matilda and Tony would take away his only source of feeding.

"Look here Adrain, I'm not sorry to say this. These duos have paid me to drag you away from my shop and the money is too much for me to decline. Indeed, you are cursed and may not see any helper in your life. Respect yourself by leaving immediately, else, you don't like the outcome" Mr. Adam supported Matilda.

"What about my payment? Today is my third week and I'm supposed to get paid for the three weeks' job" he said.

"Didn't I tell you he's shameless? How would someone in his right sense request such? I'm sure he is gonna rot in poverty" Tony mocked and before Adrain could say another thing, his legs were swept off the ground by Mr.Adam.

"I told you to leave gently but you would listen. Idiot!" He cursed and slammed his back against the dusty ground, then he began to punch him till he coughed out blood.

"If I see you in my shop again, I'll slay you". With that, Mr. Adam left him alone outside.

Matilda and Tony couldn't stop laughing.

"I'm sure with this, you wouldn't think of coming back" Matilda laughed out again.

" It's a pity that the poor boy would starve before getting another job," Tony mocked.

"That's if he doesn't starve to death because I'm not sure he is gonna get another job soon, not when I'm still in this state," Matilda added.

"Babe, what do you think about getting him a job? He may be working for us and I'll pay him handsomely" Tony suggested with tones of travesty.

"To be cleaning our butt or licking our toes?" Matilda snickered again.

Adrain was too weak to voice. With the little energy left in him, he stood up, dusting sand from his trousers, and began walking, with resentment getting enormous in his heart.
