Samantha was waiting in his office as he waltzed in. She was scribbling something on an iPad.
"Good morning Declan. Hope you slept well?" She said without raising her head. He noticed she was in a sour mood, but he could not figure out why.
"Did you get any sleep at all Sam?" He asked, hoping to lighten her countenance. "Yes I did", she replied, her eyes still fixed on what she was doing.
He decided to let it be. She would come around eventually. "We have about ten minutes before the general staff meeting", she said curtly, raising her head. Their eyes met and Samantha removed hers first. She could not deny that he was breathtaking.
Declan was a good-looking young man, and she could not help working with him for a long time
Declan panicked, and Samantha saw how worried he was after the phone call."Are you okay?" She asked him, trying so hard to avoid hitting a nerve. "I'm fine.I just need to travel back to the city immediately", he replied, trying to dial again. "Don't give me that Declan. You are worried about something or someone", Samantha pressed.Declan let out a sigh and looked up at her. "It's Hannah. I think she is in trouble", he began. "She called and I answered, but all I could hear were muffled like she could not talk or something".Samantha looked fixedly at him. She knew it was Hannah. She did not know if to be worried or jealous. She decided to suppress the latter. Now was not the time.
"Who are you?" Declan finally asked, finding his voice. He had been staring so hard at the half-naked bearded man before him, and he could only wonder what was happening. The shock had not left him yet but he kept going."Who are you?" The strange man shot back at him in reply. Declan let out a wry chuckle and on second thought, he proceeded to enter the house, to know if Hannah was safe. She was his major concern, and she might be in danger with the strange man, who held him back."It's rude of you to barge into a home you were not welcomed to", the man continued, tilting his head to the side. He was a hunk of a man, a few inches taller than Declan, but his heavily built muscular body looked awesome."B
Samantha's solid voice filled his ears as he answered the phone. "Hey boss", she began. "How was your flight?"He was silent for a while and grunted a reply. "And hope Hannah is safe", she continued, ignoring his inaudible reply."She broke up with me", Declan answered silently. He could not believe that he was blurting that out to Samantha whom he had barely known for a few days. There was a brief silence."I'm sorry about that, Declan. You don't deserve that", she finally said. He nodded even though he knew that she could not see him. He had been oblivious to a lot of things of late."She said I could not give her the stability that she wanted to build a family with. It's my fault", he cried out. "That's not
Daniel had looted the entire company's funds. What a nonentity, Declan thought. He knew this day was coming but he could not guess that it was this soon. The company was closing down and the headlines on the screen did not seem to tally with what Patricia had told him was the problem. It still reverted to him. They made it look like it was his fault. He had misused the company's funds and took to his heels when trouble came knocking. Declan was disappointed. Even though he had left the company, his mistake still haunted him. He watched as the building was emptied, and a few of the employees were asked what they thought about the company closing. Many hurled insults at him, forgetting he was
Declan let her cry. Abigail had collected Damian from Patricia's hands and he watched her cry, her shoulders heaving as she went about it. It was irrelevant to ask her what had happened as she would not be able to talk comprehensively. He passed her a tissue box so she could help herself. All the while, he had been judgy about what Patricia's real intentions were. She had joined forces with Daniel in the past to frustrate him. Out of the blue, she was running back to him for help without giving him space to decide if he wanted her in his life or not. The fact that she was Hannah's sister angered him more. He was slightly disgusted but he would not let her know.
Samantha was at the airport to pick him up when he arrived. Declan had been giddy with excitement through the entire flight back to his father's place.Once Samantha had told him the good news, he made up his mind to be with them for the deal closing and the celebration afterward. He had come up with a proposal and had sent them out to major industries in the city to supply them fuel for a long time, using their quality strategy, and their seclusion as an advantage. They had been having multiple meetings over the few weeks he had been away, and they'd been keeping their fingers crossed. At some point, most of the staff were beginning to lose faith in his business idea, and just at his office the previous
Declan arrived at the venue about thirty minutes late. After those couple of wine glasses and the stress from the flight, he decided he needed a long sleep, and that was what he got himself. He had been a bit confused about what to wear to the party, and he had wanted to call Samantha for help, but he did not want to disturb her. He was trying so hard not to go a step further asides from their work relationship at the office. He did not want her to get ideas. He knew that he had not fully gotten over Hannah either. He was hurt but he knew he once loved her.The lights in the restaurant were dim and he searched around for his colleagues. He had successfully sneaked out of the house and he would not be very excited if he was the first person to arrive. Samantha had sent him the address earlier, and he hoped he was in the right place. He soon sighted Bobby, their tech expert. He had a short and a t-shirt on. Declan was glad about the jeans and denim shirt that he had finally opted for.
Declan tapped nervously on the desk and glanced at his wristwatch for the umpteenth time. They had set the meeting time for two pm. It was already fifteen minutes past two and she was yet to arrive. He had left in a hurry and he could not muster the confidence to tell Samantha that it was because of Hannah. He knew she would figure it out eventually. If he wanted to get into a long-term relationship with her, he would have to tell her what was going on at some point. The door slid open and Hannah appeared. Even if she just found out that she was pregnant, he glanced at her stomach to check for a baby bump. Her stomach was flat. He watched her as she waltzed towards him. She offered him a hug but he rejected it. He saw the hurt in her eyes but he could not help it."You are not looking bad", she began as she sat down and signaled the waiter. She was famished and needed a refill. He was quiet and only shot her a piercing look."Am I the father?" He finally asked, surprisingly calm. Sh
