Chapter 5

Declan stood facing the glass walls in his new office. Numerous thoughts rummaged through his mind. He could not stop thinking about how far he had come.

He was grateful for all that he had achieved. Just last week, his name appeared on the Forbes list as one of the most successful businessmen.

This was something he could not think of three years ago. Despite his speech defect and his inferiority complex, he had managed to scale up the financial ladder, and amass so much attention.

Everyone wanted to be friends with him, and every girl wanted to date him, but he was not like Daniel.

"Hey Declan", a familiar voice called behind him, startling him. He had not heard the door open. He turned around immediately and Patricia stood before him.

She looked ravishing as ever in her black suit and red colored coat. He flashed her a smile which she did not return.

"I did not hear you come in", he said pointing to the seat before him, motioning her to sit. Patricia looked disgusted with his speech, and Declan was beginning to notice the knife-cutting tension between them.

She did not sit. Something annoyed her and he knew this.

He hoped his position as the new boss had not aggravated her anger.

"What brings you here this early?" Declan asked, ignoring her rage.

"You had no right to take away what rightfully belongs to my husband", Patricia began, the vexation in her tone could not go unnoticed.

"It's not what you think", Declan answered, trying to sound as calm as possible.

"You have all the money all of a sudden and you think you can buy the company and take full charge. You'll never fit into Daniel's shoes.

He's the rightful face of this business, and you're just a bastard, one with no rightful roots in this family", Patricia raged. She was not going to stop anytime soon.

Declan was taken aback by her outburst. She was not the one he intended to hurt. He was not happy that his decisions had hurt her. He once had something for her. She was supposed to be his bride.

That wave of pity for her from the wedding day three years ago still melted him.

It was obvious that wealth and power had changed her over the years. That was what being married to Daniel would do to a woman. It imposed so much hate and greed on a person, such that you're far away from any form of compassion.

"The company was already going bankrupt. Buying it was my own way of keeping the company solvent.

I had to do something than watch the whole thing burn down", Declan fired back, in the calmest way he could.

It was obvious Patricia was trying so hard to be patient with his stuttering.

"And that makes you think you now own us?" Patricia asked, her tone soaked in sarcasm. Declan did not reply to her. He was getting enraged by her attitude.

"You can never and will never be a part of this family. You may have the company to yourself but this family will never acknowledge you as part of theirs", Patricia continued barely considering anything he said.

"At least, no one is out of their jobs. I made sure of that", Declan spoke up, wishing he did not have to stutter.

"You can put us all out of jobs if you want, but your weak and stuttering self would never run this company the right way.

You would never be better than Daniel", Patricia was shouting at the top of her voice. Good thing the doors and walls were soundproof.

"Control the way you talk to me or I will throw you out of my office", Declan said. He was very annoyed at this point.

"You will do no such thing", Patricia said, letting out a small mocking laughter.

Declan did not say any more words to her. He silently walked to his desk and picked up the landline and dialed security. Patricia watched in amazement and could not believe her eyes.

Within a few seconds, two security guards stepped into the room and led her out. Declan watched them. He would not speak, would not tell them to stop.

She had bitten more than she could chew, and that was not what he wanted at this time.

He had a lot of work to do in rebranding the family business. Daniel had left a lot of mess for him to handle.

His extravagant spending had brought the company to the point of bankruptcy, and Declan knew that buying the company was the best way out.

He turned around and faced the glass walls again. He needed new ideas. The view of the city would probably be some sort of inspiration.

Patricia was still fuming with vexation when she made her way to Daniel's office. He was flirting with his secretary again when she entered.

It was what she had to live with to stay married to Daniel. The whole world knew Daniel and his philandering ways, but everyone was scared to talk.

The first time she protested about it, Daniel had paid no attention to her. He would not stop. He gave her everything she wanted and she lacked nothing, so she had no right to complain.

"Get out", she said angrily to the secretary, a young girl probably in her early twenties. She scurried off immediately.

She then turned to Daniel, who was now glancing through some files pretentiously.

"Stop acting like you were not doing something wrong, while your brother is suddenly taking over everything", she began, relaxing on a chair.

Declan stopped what he was doing and looked at Patricia. "What are you talking about?" He asked, speaking for the first time.

"Your brother has taken over this company and soon, we all would be out of jobs", Patricia continued.

" That's not possible", Daniel said, trying his possible best to sound calm.

"He's already throwing me out of his office. Next, he'll throw you out of this company", Patricia shot back.

"It's stated in the contract. He's not putting anyone out of their jobs. He can be the CEO but I still have my plans in place, to milk a fortune out of this company and secure life for us, and the child", Daniel assured, but it had no effect on Patricia.

"He has more money now. He's powerful. He can decide on a change of terms at any time. If we must do anything, then we have to be very fast about it", she replied, tapping angrily on the desk.

Daniel glanced at her. She was right. Declan was a threat. He had so much money and would want a change of terms soon.

If once-upon-a-time weak but still stuttering Declan could throw Patricia out of his office, then that was proof that his days in the company were numbered.

He needed to start putting plans in place to ensure that he took a lot from Declan. He knew his old moves would not work.

Declan was wiser now and it would take a whole lot of planning to get where he wanted to. Patricia was right. If he needed to do something, then he had to be very fast about it.
