Chapter 6

Daniel paced about his office as soon as Patricia left. He was thinking of a new scheme to take Declan out again.

He did it three years ago, making sure that he had no recognition in the family business, and he could still do it again. Everyone still saw him as the face of the family business, but he knew that with time, all that would fade, and Declan would fully be in charge.

He had to do something about it, but first, he would put Declan in his place for kicking Patricia out of his office.

Declan was flipping through some files and talking with his new assistant when Daniel entered. He glanced at Daniel but did not stop speaking.

He showed Daniel to a seat instead, which he surprisingly took. "Let us continue this later Abigail", he said to his secretary with a small smile.

The bubbly bright young lady smiled back at him and made her way out of the office. She seemed so at peace working with Declan. Daniel had been a piece of work when she was working with him.

Declan proceeded to check his watch for the time.

"It's past lunch time. Let's grab lunch together and discuss on our way", he started talking first, ignoring his brother's angry stares.

"I don't want to have lunch with a weakling like you", Daniel replied, still comfortably seated.

Declan let out a wry laugh and stood up, making Daniel more annoyed. "Then that's your problem", Declan replied.

Daniel must still think he was Declan from three years ago. He could not wait to let him know that a lot had changed and is still changing with him.

Here was Daniel, the real enemy seated before him. He wished he could make life miserable for him right away, but baby steps.

He would do it slowly and would take him off guard when he did not see him coming. Only the thought of it caused the rage in him to surge. He would repay Daniel for every single ounce of pain he had caused him in the past.

"You had no right to kick Patricia out of your office. You're the CEO now, and that doesn't make you part of the family. You still have no place here", Daniel blurted out.

"Maybe the money and fame have gotten into your head, but do not forget that no one acknowledges you as family. You were kicked out, Declan. You have no rightful place here".

Declan did not say a word in his defense. He sat back down on his chair instead and tapped gently on his desk. He knew this would piss Daniel off and that was exactly what he wanted.

"If you dare repeat what you did to Patricia one more time, you would see the worst of me. I'll sue you for harassment", Daniel continued raging.

Declan scoffed and looked up at Daniel. He seemed to have forgotten who was in charge all of a sudden. He wanted to say something in his defense but he would not exchange words with Daniel at this time. He remained calm.

"Or maybe we can do this the hard way and prove to you that I'm still in charge here", Daniel continued, still vexed with the fact that he was being ignored by Declan.

He quickly tapped on his earpiece. "Come in here immediately", he shouted and tapped again.

Within a few seconds, four armed men rushed into the office, only to see Declan and Daniel. They looked around for the intruder, and when there was none, they stood and waited for an instruction from Daniel.

"Take him out of here at once", Daniel said angrily. He was not having it, and he just wanted to show off to Declan that he was still very much respected in the company.

The guards stood still for some moments and looked at Daniel like he was out of his mind. Their leader looked at Declan who signaled him with his hands to escort Daniel out.

The four men gripped Daniel all of a sudden, taking him by surprise. He struggled to wriggle out of their grip but they were stronger than he was.

That single act made Declan burst out with laughter. It was so hilarious seeing Daniel struggle.

He was used to having everything his way all the time. Times had changed. Power had changed hands. Things were different.

"Let me go. I'm in charge here", Daniel said hurriedly. It was embarrassing that he was being held that way in Declan's presence.

"That's not true Daniel", Declan spoke for the first time. He would not let Daniel assume anymore. This was time to put him in his place.

"I'm the boss here and I want you to get that into that thick skull of yours", Declan continued surprising Daniel who never thought Declan would speak up to him.

"And until you come to that reality, do not think of speaking to me", Declan was partly annoyed now.

"And as for patricia, tell her to be mindful of how she speaks to her husband's boss", he said with a tone of finality, taking Daniel by surprise.

Declan felt relieved. He had waited so long to speak this way to Daniel and he had finally done so. He saw the hurt in Daniel's eyes as he looked at him one more time and he breathed in satisfaction.

He would relish in this very moment for the rest of the day, the defeat in Daniel's countenance.

Declan looked at the guards again and signaled them one more time. Daniel was grabbed and taken out of the office immediately, amidst struggling.

Declan turned to the window. His lunch break was over but he was really hungry. He rang Abigail and asked her to get him food. He finally got back to work.

New ideas were finally rolling in and he intended to maximize every bit of it. He had great plans for the family's business. He wanted to rebrand and make it the cynosure of all eyes once more.

He wanted to think about what Daniel said, but he quickly shook off those thoughts. But he could not continue to live in denial of the fact that he had no place in his family.

What he would do to see his father one more time. Aside from Samson, there was no one else he could call family. His life was lonely. He longed for a place to call home.

Maybe he could take a wife. He brushed those thought asides also. Thinking about Patricia, that sort of distraction was not what he needed at the moment. He wanted to work on the business first and take a wife later.

Despite all the recent happenings, Declan could not deny that the pieces of his life were finally coming together.

All of a sudden, everything made sense and his life held a new direction. This was what he always wanted. A life filled with purpose.
