GO GET A DIVORCE

Excitement lit up Tory's face as she asked her grandmother, "Grandma, am I the one?" She couldn't help but feel thrilled at the prospect of marrying into a wealthy family. However, her joy quickly vanished as she heard her grandmother's response.

Old Mrs. Greene shook her head gently, "It's not you, Tory," and disappointment washed over Tory as she realized it wasn't her.

The room fell silent, and others were surprised by the unexpected turn of events. Curiosity got the best of the other single girls, and they started asking if they were the chosen one.

One after another, Mrs. Greene continued to shake her head, indicating that none of them were the fortunate individual. Finally, she raised her hand, gesturing for everyone to stop speculating.

With a warm smile on her face, Mrs. Greene decided to put an end to the suspense. She spoke deliberately, building up anticipation, "Enough with the guesses. Let me reveal the person who captured Scott Payton's heart." A sense of anxiety filled the room as they eagerly waited for her to continue, "The person is Hayley."

The whole place fell into stunned silence, which was the last thing anyone expected. The air was thick with tension as each family member processed the unexpected revelation. The only person who didn't feel surprised and had anticipated this turn of events was Elijah. With a knowing look in his eyes, he seemed to be the calm amidst the storm of emotions.

As the shock wore off, the family members began to exchange whispers in hushed tones, trying to make sense of the situation. Tory, always one to speak her mind, couldn't help but start to say something that was bound to be controversial, "But this bitch..."

Before she could continue her words, a stern glance from her grandmother made her fall shut up immediately.

Hayley, too, regained her composure after the initial shock. She took a deep breath and finally spoke, her voice steady, "Grandma, have you forgotten I'm married?"

Old Mrs. Greene, with her years of wisdom, smiled knowingly, "Of course, my dear granddaughter. I remember you mentioning that you wanted to honor your late grandfather's wishes and wait for three years. Today marks three years since your marriage, and our family has endured so much since you married that fool. I can see how much you have suffered and changed during this time. Look at your skin, it no longer glitters like before. When you have a powerful husband you will always look better."

She paused, her eyes filled with warmth and love for her granddaughter, before continuing, "Now, your marriage is no longer valid and considering your husband hasn't touched you during these three years, you would make a much better match for the Payton family. Tomorrow, you should go to the Vital Records Department to get a divorce."

Hayley's heart pounded in her chest as she absorbed her grandmother's words. She glanced over at Elijah, who was quietly pretending to eat, but she didn't notice the subtle stolen glances he cast in her direction from the corner of his eyes.

After a brief silence that felt like an eternity, Hayley spoke with firm resolution, her voice filled with determination, "I don't want to divorce Elijah."

The Greene family members were taken aback, and a collective "What!!!" echoed in the room. They strongly believed that even if a small piece of gold and a stone were dropped, nobody in their right mind would choose the stone over the valuable gold.

Scott Payton came from a prominent and affluent family, which made him the center of attention for many. Poor Elijah, who faced mental challenges, often went unnoticed and neglected despite his needs. A lot of girls were hoping for the opportunity to marry into the Payton family and yet here was Hayley rejecting such a good opportunity.

As Dorothy's emotions reached a boiling point, she couldn't hold back her frustration any longer and her voice trembled with anger as she scolded her daughter,

"Hayley, are you stupid? What is wrong with you? We've given you everything, and yet you seem determined to make all the wrong choices. Do you want to suffer forever? Do you have any idea how much I've sacrificed for you? Look at all my friends and their daughters—they are living such good lives. Their daughters are married to rich and powerful men, and they enjoy a life of luxury and privilege. What did I do to have a selfish daughter like you?"

Tears welled up in Dorothy's eyes as she expressed her deep concerns for Hayley's future.

Hayley's mother's tears didn't affect her this time. She firmly responded, "No matter what you say, I won't divorce Elijah. If anyone else wants, they can marry Scott, but not me."

Looking at the Greene family members, Hayley added, "If you try to force me into marrying Scott, I won't care about your futures then. The hatred inside me will make me indifferent to your suffering."

Before her grandfather arranged her marriage with Elijah, Scott Payton had pursued Hayley in the past, but she always rejected him. Scott was known for being a playboy, spending his family's money recklessly and engaging in various frivolous activities. Hayley believed marrying Elijah was a better choice than being with someone like Scott.

Old Mrs. Greene was also angry and expressed it by hitting the table, saying, "How dare you challenge me, Hayley? Do you think you are all powerful just because Scott desires you? Or you can do whatever you please."

The rest of the Greene family remained silent as Old Mrs. Greene scolded Hayley.

Elijah wouldn't have objected if Hayley agreed to divorce him, considering how much she had suffered because of him. However, she continued to protect him, and in turn, he vowed to protect her.

Standing up, Elijah's eyes had a dangerous intensity as he said, "No one can force her to do anything."

His words were delivered slowly but carried a strong sense of power.
