SCOTT

As the room fell silent, all eyes were on Elijah, who had managed to shock everyone for the second time that day. First, he had slapped Daniel, and now he was issuing warnings to everyone present.

Old Mrs. Greene couldn't hide her anger at the moment, and she was growing increasingly frustrated with Elijah's troublesome behavior.

One person in the room couldn't help but express their concern, "What's wrong with this idiot? Is his sickness getting worse?"

Those who knew Elijah from the past were surprised by his current behavior, as he had never dared to talk back to someone in the family or even consider laying a hand on someone before. This sudden change in demeanor was strange and unsettling.

Amidst the tension, Old Mrs. Greene directed her anger towards Hayley, exclaiming, "Hayley, can't you see what kind of man you're married to? He doesn't have an ounce of respect for me. How can you defend such a useless husband?"

Tory, who harbored jealousy towards Hayley for being chosen by Scott, seized the opportunity to add her own bitter words, "Hayley, you're a disappointment. Everyone else here shows utmost respect to grandma, but you're advising your husband not to do the same."

Feeling overwhelmed by the situation, Hayley let out a sigh. She found it challenging to explain Elijah's sudden attitude and actions, so all she could do was reply, "Grandma, please give me more time to think things through."

Old Mrs. Greene nodded but also offered a reminder, "Remember, time is running out to secure the contract from Mr. John. If you marry the young master of the Payton family, obtaining the contract will be a piece of cake."

Hayley's grandmother was cautious not to exert too much pressure on her because of the fear that doing so might prevent them from achieving their desired goals. There was a concern that excessive pushing could lead Hayley to extreme measures like suicide or even cutting ties with her family and using the Payton family's influence against them. It was a realization that people could behave erratically when pushed beyond their limits.

After the meeting, they all returned home. The sequence of entering the house was as follows: Hayley went in first, followed by her mother, Dorothy, and finally, Elijah.

However, as Elijah was about to enter, Dorothy stood in his way and coldly uttered, "You can't come in. Find somewhere else to go; I don't consider you part of our family."

With anger in her voice, she proceeded to scold Elijah relentlessly, with spittle inadvertently hitting his face. In response, Hayley stepped in, defending Elijah, "Mom, that's enough! Do you want me to leave the house too?" The thought of her daughter leaving was not something Dorothy wanted, so she fell silent and eventually let Elijah enter the house.

That night, Elijah laid on the ground, pretending to sleep, but he couldn't fall asleep and remained wide awake. Hayley, on the other hand, was lying on the bed with her eyes wide open. Despite being married, they had never been intimate. Their usual sleeping arrangement was Hayley on the bed and Elijah on the ground.

Hayley kept rolling around in bed as so many thoughts engulfed her. She was under so much pressure. She did not want to marry Scott but she also had to think about her mother and grandmother.

Eventually, she glanced at Elijah's sleeping face, " He's so handsome. I wish he was not a fool, then maybe..." She said in a low voice. This was the first time in their three years relationship that she had really taken notice of his good looks.

As she drifted off to sleep, Elijah secretly opened his eyes. Once he confirmed that Hayley was deeply asleep, he carefully covered her with the duvet. He then took out his phone and tried calling a strange number, but it was switched off. He let out a sigh and returned to bed.

The next morning, when Alexander left his bedroom, he was surprised to find his mother-in-law welcoming someone. Going downstairs, he frowned upon seeing the person she was ingratiating with: Scott Payton.

They all sat at the dinning table – his mother-in-law, Hayley, and Scott – enjoying their meal. Despite Scott's attempts at conversation, Hayley remained indifferent towards him, so he shifted his focus to Hayley's mother, who wore a flattering smile whenever she interacted with Scott. Seeing this, Scott decided to use Dorothy to win over Hayley.

"Such a shameless person." Elijah cursed silently.

At that moment, Hayley noticed Elijah standing at the corner and quickly called out to him with a warm smile. "Oh, you're up? Come join us, Elijah," she said, inviting him to come have breakfast.

As Elijah approached them and was about to take a seat, his mother-in-law rudely shouted at him, "Get out of here. Can't you see we have a visitor?"

Hayley was about to speak up, but Scott interjected, "I think we should let him join us. After all, he is mentally challenged. By doing this, we are helping. You know it's good to support those who are in need."

Dorothy, who still had a flattered expression, quickly agreed, "Sure, sure. You are right."

Scott was angry that Hayley had been indifferent and ignoring him since but she smiled the moment Elijah showed up. But he only supported Hayley to make her like him.

Hayley couldn't refute, so she decided to remain silent and focused on her meal,

Scott seemed to be in a good mood, reveling in the attention he received from Dorothy. He had her in his palms. Picking up a fancy bag that was near him, he took out a beautifully wrapped box and handed it to Dorothy.

"Since it's my first time visiting, I had to bring my future mother-in-law a gift; otherwise, I might appear rude," Scott said with a smile.

Dorothy's excitement was evident as she received the gift, saying, "Thank you very much, I really appreciate it."

"Come on, open it," Scott urged her.
