The next morning, Cassie had just gotten out of the shower when her phone screen lit up with an incoming call from an unknown number.
She glanced tentatively at the number before picking up the call, and she was greeted by a pleasant female voice.Cassie only hummed in response when the person confirmed her identity and quietly listened in a subtle shock for the remaining duration.Mark was out in the kitchen, preparing breakfast when she walked out of the room after disconnecting the call.He noticed that she seemed to be in a daze, as she was looking forward without her eyes focusing on anything in front of her.Prompting her gently, he spoke while placing their plates on the dining table;“You alright, Cass?”Cassie’s eyes flicked to his face, finally registering his presence, and she nodded before speaking up;“Yeah, I just… I just got a call from someone named Claudia from Clarke Communications.”Mark immediately understood that they must have reached out to her regarding the funding, but he pretended to be surprised, nudging her to go on.“Really?”She continued without lifting her head, while tossing her food around the plate,“She- she said that Mr. Harrison Clarke wants to meet with me. But how could it be? I didn’t even reach out to him, and today, out of the blue, I got a call from his office?”Her frown deepened, and Mark spoke up,“But isn’t it a good thing that they contacted you themselves? Mr. Clarke must have heard about the Blue Mountains Group after yesterday’s announcement from Lady Mariella?”She nodded with hesitation,“I suppose… that could be a thing. But Mark…”She lifted her gaze while continuing,“I am so nervous to meet him! What if it’s something else, what if he thinks I am not capable enough to secure funds for the company? You know what, I wasn't even able to believe it at first! What if it is really too good to be true?”“I suppose then, the only thing you can do now is to show up and give it your best, isn’t it?”Mark said with a faint smile, and went on,“I’m confident in your abilities in heading a business, and it is about time you should be, too.You should walk into the Clarke Communications head office with your head held high and brief Mr. Clarke on how you plan to use his funds for the company, until he himself asks you to take his money!”Cassie chuckled in spite of herself, as he said with a serious note,“My wife is a very good business-woman, and it’s high time that people at the Blue Mountains Group see it with their own eyes.”Cassie watched him with a complex mental state. She had tried so hard to drive him away from herself yesterday, and he had even left the farmhouse without informing her.Even after they had returned to their own apartment last night, they hadn’t spoken a word, as she wanted to sort out her thoughts first, and he wanted to give her some space. But his words had really made her feel like she could handle this meeting successfully, and before she left the kitchen to go and change, she couldn’t help but express the gratitude from her heart;“Mark, thank you for encouraging me today.”________Cassie found herself standing in front of the Clarke Communications head office at 9:45, exactly fifteen minutes before her scheduled meeting with the richest businessman in the city. She checked out her reflection in the glass doorway. She was dressed in a beige silk blouse and formal straight pants. Her blonde hair was styled into a french roll, and she tucked a few stray strands behind her ear before taking a deep breath and stepping into the foyer. The receptionist stood up as soon as she saw Cassie walking towards her desk, and preemptively asked,“Miss Holmes?”Cassie smiled and greeted her, as the receptionist escorted her to Mr Clarke’s office.Harrison Clarke’s behavior towards her was unexpectedly accommodating, and he seemed to be quite impressed with her plans for bringing the company out of its sinking trajectory.Eventually, he broke the news to her;“Miss Holmes, I think our investment will be in good hands with someone like you. I’m glad to tell you that one of our shareholders has offered the Blue Mountains Group a sum of 500 million dollars."Cassie was tempted to pinch herself to make sure that this wasn’t just a dream, and managed to speak up after a few seconds,“Thank you, Mr. Clarke, thank you so much. But may I ask you the name of this shareholder, if you don’t mind?”“I’m sorry, Miss Holmes, but I cannot disclose this information.”He added with an enigmatic smile,“But be rest assured, you will know about him soon enough.”________Andrew was waiting for his college friend at the upscale cafe, checking his phone every five minutes. As soon as the server arrived with the drinks he had ordered, his friend also entered the cafe and headed over to his table.“Hey, Drew! Long time no see, man!”Andrew also shook hands with him as he smiled,“Hey, Connor!”After a few minutes of chatting, they got down to business.Connor drew out a cheque and pushed it along the table towards Andrew, while saying.“Here is the 100 million, as promised. You are at liberty to use it for your company, or however you like…”Andrew’s eyes bulged as he practically jumped towards the cheque, but Connor placed his palm on top of it.Andrew looked up with a confused expression, only to find a dry smile on his face.Connor explained with a lazy drawl, “I want something in return, however.”Andrew managed to cover up his irritation with a smile, saying,“Of course, brother. Anything you say, we are old friends, after all.”He took a sip of his coffee before speaking,“I want something precious in return for my money. I want you to make Cassie agree to divorce her husband and marry me instead.”Andrew was relieved on hearing this and his fake smile turned somewhat genuine,“That’s it? It won’t be too difficult to make Cassie leave her trashy husband. I will surely make my sister marry you, if it means I will become the Managing Director.”He added under his breath while lifting his coffee mug, “For my legacy, I am ready to do anything.”The conference room was abuzz with chatter and gossip, as the Blue Mountains Group shareholders’ meeting had been called by Lady Mariella Holmes at an extremely short notice. Major shareholders- both new and old, had flown in from various corners of the country for this meeting, and those who couldn't make it due to the tight schedule had joined in via video conference. It was time for the Holmes family’s matriarch to announce who would be chosen as the new Managing Director after the stipulated trial period was over. The twenty - four hours after her initial announcement had been rife with tensions, and everyone from the board members to the receptionists were talking about what the outcome could be, and even hedging their bets according to their own preferences. Naturally, this was a matter of great interest as after all, the upper management of their company was going to change after today.Andrew Holmes strode through the glass doors, barely two minutes before the meeting was su
In response to her grandmother’s question, Cassie spoke up,“Grandma, I have secured this amount on behalf of our company, from Clarke Communications as our benefactor. This morning, Mr Harrison Clarke himself called me for a meeting and after I presented my plan to him, he decided to invest in Blue Mountains Group.”She had shut all the wagging mouths in the room raising questions on her status, with one simple statement- as if someone had opened the floodgates in the direction of a raging fire. On hearing these words, Andrew looked like he was strangling on his own breaths. He had just said that she wouldn’t even be able to secure an appointment with him, then how had she persuaded Mr Clarke for 500 million dollars!?Had he grossly underestimated her so far? After a few seconds of silence, her grandmother nodded, signaling for Cassie to sit down. She and Mark had just settled into the empty seats near the door when Lady Holmes started her from a new point;“Thank you for your pati
The rest of the day went like a nightmare for Cassie, and last night, she had not even been able to sleep properly. This was one of the reasons Mark had insisted on dropping her off on his bike, and she also agreed to it.Mark was riding his bike to the client’s office at the other side of the city, with Cassie sitting on the back seat, anxiously checking her watch intermittently. She had just breathed a sigh of relief after realizing that they had reached the final intersection before the office, with five minutes to spare; when they encountered a car coming towards them at a high speed. The Mercedes came speeding towards the bike, breaking the stop signal blinking in its direction. Mark veered his moving bike to the left at the last moment, to avoid a collision with the car.The bike was in motion and it came to a halt with a sudden jerk, also tilting towards the left.Due to this, Cassie lost her balance and fell to the ground on her hands and knees as soon as the bike stopped. The
Both Cassie and Mark were outraged by Moria's bitter words and wanted to give her an adequate reply to teach her some etiquette. But before any of them could react, seven black Jaguars came to a screeching halt at the intersection. Some guards, wearing all black- outfits, stepped out of them. Their unexplained presence was intimidating, and they seemed to be talking amongst themselves via the bluetooth earpieces they all were wearing. One of them reached to open the door of the fourth jaguar, parked in the middle of the envoy. He opened the black umbrella in his hand, and placed it in front of the door. A middle- aged man stepped out of the car and into the shade of the umbrella, his eyes fixed towards the three of them. Another bodyguard rushed towards Mark with an umbrella in hand, but stopped in his place after one gesture from him. Before the tall man could take more than one step forward, eight more well- built men, wearing black safari suits, jumped out of the cars, and forme
"And don't think about me too much. I'll be back soon, after meeting Mr. Rover." These were the words that Mark had said to Cassie before leaving, but all Cassie seemed to be capable of at the moment, was repeating the same sentence in her mind again and again. Her eyes were eagerly searching for a cab at the same time.It was the first time that Mark had left her at the behest of someone else; otherwise, in all these years, he had never left her side suddenly, for any reason. Her safety was the only thing he was always concerned about.Sometimes she also used to mock him about this, saying that he tended to act like he was actually the richest person on earth, and as if their life was always at stake without the presence of guards guarding them.It was not that she never liked his caring attitude for her, but she had always found this action a bit over-the-top, and she wasn't shy to express this to him, either. And while she was busy with her thoughts, she heard Moira's voice once
Mark wanted to argue, and wanted to tell his Grandfather that he could not expose himself right now.But the sadness in those old eyes, the guilt for a crime they had never committed and the regret of not being able to do something that they wanted very badly, stopped him.He nodded and walked out of the library, thinking it was not the right time to say or do anything. After all, there were still four days left until the weekend, so he would wait for the opportunity to convince his grandfather; having decided this, he stepped towards his room. Immersed in his thoughts, he climbed up the flight of stairs that led to his room. But he paused for a second before entering the room, his hand frozen at the handle of the door.He was standing in front of this door after so many years, that this duration had almost convinced him that he wouldn't be able to enter this room, ever again. As after so many years, he was still standing at the same spot he had started walking from. It was making hi
The wall clock placed in the living room showed that it was already seven o'clock. But Mark had not returned yet, and Cassie was waiting for him to come back. She was getting worried, since he had not called her all day. Not only this, but after he had left, he hadn't replied to any of her messages, either. This was something she had never experienced in the entire time period she had known him.She had met him four years ago; back when she was in college. He was the most brilliant student of the class, and the only thing people used to look down on him for was his economical status. But she had always admired him and had always been a fan of his skills; even in their college days, he used to work as a delivery boy and still managed to get the first rank secured in his name, every single time.He might have gotten a decent job after his graduation, if only he didn't have to move with her to Clovelly after their marriage. As an act of vindictiveness, her family had managed to use thei
Connor was in his car, parked under Cassie's apartment, waiting anxiously for any updates. Andrew had promised him that if he agreed to increase the investment, not only would he convince Cassie to marry him, but he would also bring her along for dinner tonight. And because of that, he had also agreed to bring her to the approaching party at the Rover mansion as his partner. After all, the Rovers really preferred to deal with family businesses. He would have been successful in getting an investment or signing some collaborative projects with them much earlier than this; if only the Rovers were not this private. But finally, they had decided to show their faces to the rest of the world and had invited everyone from the business community in the North as well, otherwise they had never bothered about them anyway. And this was his cue to make the most of this opportunity; by not just showing up to the party, but also by acting like the most deserving candidate and dazzling them with his
