Ch -98: Trust me

"What do you mean?!"

Cassie couldn't decide whether or not Mark was joking. On one hand, the statement was too absurd to be true; on the other hand, his mood was too serious to be frivolous.

Before she could decide, Mark himself opened his mouth.

"Connor was given bail today, on the basis of his heart condition and lack of evidence-"

"Didn't Simon and Jerry show up?"

She couldn't hold herself back from asking; the way she had been thinking, with two witnesses and solid evidence, their case was supposed to be airtight. Then how had he managed to escape?"

A look of distress crossed his face.

"They did. But their testimony fell flat in the face of cross questioning. I don't know who this new attorney was… but he didn't let anyone go without probing deeply.

He needled both Jerry and Simon about whether or not they had seen Connor hit Matteo with their own eyes… and he twisted it such that they couldn't conclude his guilt."
