Chapter 4
~~ Connection ~~Huntsville High...“Oh, you've got to be kidding me!” the auburn haired Chase muttered with a frown, standing next to Ian, as they stared at their lockers.A guy with brown hair, clad in a big brown jacket, black trousers and boots, had a girl pinned to the lockers as they locked lips with pleasure.“Really, Ace? Must it be by our... He's doing this on purpose, you know that right?” Chase muttered again, pointing at the kissing couple.“Sigh... I'll just tell him to leave,” Ian sighed.Chase chuckled, “And what if he says no, like he's always done the past five hundred times? Then what?...” he looked at Ian in the eyes, “ A fight? You know you can't beat the guy.”“Wow. Thanks for the motivation, dude. I really needed that,” Ian smiled sarcastically.“I know, right? You're welcome,” Chase flowed with the sarcasm, smiling and patting Ian in the back. Then the both of them sighed simultaneously, and they took slow steps towards their lockers.“We can do this,” Ian said with enthusiasm.“Yeah. We can do this,” Chase smirked. But as they got in proximity, their confidence level dropped to zero. This was Ace Leather they were about to face. The current captain of the school's football team, and has led them to win two trophies consecutively. He was also rich, he had a jeep and was hot — every lady's man. There wasn't anyone who'd never heard of him, including the freshmen.Ian and Chase were practically nobodies in the school, who were they to talk to Ace casually?Ian bit his lips, shaking his head as he slowly raised his hand and tapped the kissing Ace from behind. Ace didn't budge at first, but after a few more taps, he slowly withdrew his lips from the girl. He softly sucked her upper lips while doing so.‘Oh, come on!’ Chase rolled his eyes. He dared not say that out loudly.Ace turned with the girl, holding her waist as he sized up the two friends with his deep brown eyes.“If it isn’t the dork buddies”“Good to see you too, Ace,” Chase feigned a smile as he half-waved. Ian just nodded. He looked at them for a bit before asking, “You want something?”“Seriously?” Chase narrowed his eyes, his patience was running out, unlike Ian who looked really calm. “Dude, you're standing right in front of our lockers. So, please... can you just move?”“Was that why you tapped me and disrupted my fun?” Ace asked with his deep voice, staring into their eyes. Chase and Ian also stared back, fear brimming within them, but they made sure to look tough on the outside. All of a sudden, Ace pushed his body forward a bit, causing the duo to flinch back in fear. Chase almost shouted, covering his mouth. Then Ace laughed, “You should have said so. You're lucky I'm in a good mood today.”Still holding the girl’s waist, they walked away with unfettered ego.‘Phew... That went pretty well,’ Ian praised in his heart. Situations like this always resulted in assaults and fights, and even though he and Chase clearly had the advantage of numbers, the mere fear they had for Ace always put them at the loosing end. So they mostly ran for their lives when it comes up.Seeing them leave, Chase mouthed, “Jerk.”“Heh...” Ian only laughed as he opened his locker. “You're all talk, you know?”“Huh?” Chase also opened his locker, which was directly next to Ian's own. “No I'm not. I can take that guy on with no sweat.”“Oh really?” Ian laughed, stuffing his locker with his books.“Yes. He ain't so tough. I just don't want to be the guy who beats up a rich kid. You know? I'd be seen as a bad guy....”As Chase kept ranting and boasting, Ian closed his locker and he tilted his head right, taking a glance around. His eyes paused as he saw the new girl from his class come out from the classroom and headed to her own locker. She opened it, but instead of emptying her bag, she poured more books into it from her locker. School had closed for the day, he wondered why she did that.“Hey, Ian, over here,” Chase snapped his fingers at his friend's eyes, causing the latter to retract his gaze and look at him.“What?”Chase rolled his eyes and started complaining, “I should be asking you that. You're the one that zoned off...”Ignoring his overly dramatic friend, Ian resumed staring at the girl, who now had another girl talking to her. He could barely see her face as she had her head dropped towards the marble floor. This had been her usual habit since he met her. He'd sometimes look at the floor to see what was so fascinating about it.“See? There he goes again!” Chase's voice snapped him back. “Were you even listening?”“Nope,” Ian said and nudged his head towards the girl.Chase raised a brow and half-turned, “Yeah, you like her. So what? Just go talk to her.”“What? I can't just 'go talk to her',” Ian gave an air quote. He kept looking at her, “She's new... And pretty and sweet...” He began smiling subconsciously.“Dude, you need help,” Chase only shook his head.“Shush! She's coming,” Ian whispered and pressed his face against locker sharply. She held some books in her hands as she walked along the hallway briskly, her head looking straight at the door like she should just appear outside the school. She saw too shy to walk amid everyone. It was like all gazes were fixated on her. With that on her mind, she accidentally brushed Chase with her elbow, dropping a book, but she didn't bother, she kept on walking. She didn't notice the book drop though, her mind was too transfixed on getting out of the building as fast as she could.Chase picked up the book and pulled Ian away from the locker, handing it to over him.“Huh?” Ian was puzzled.“She dropped it,” Chase smiled.“Uh... okay... So...?” Ian was still lost.Chase face palmed, “Go gave it to her, dumbass!”Ian's face brightened, “Really? That'd be nice, but what would I say?”Chase raised a brow in exasperation, “That she dropped her book. What else?”Before Ian could make up another silly excuse, he pushed him forward, “Be quick, she's outside already.”Ian staggered at first, then took brisk steps till he got out of the building, he then ran up to her and gave her the book.“Oh, t-thank you,” she managed to say, her head bent down.‘Heh, and I thought I’d be the shy one,’ Ian smirked, gaining a bit of confidence.“Uhm, Kira, right?” he asked when she was about to leave.“Yes,” she nodded, still not looking at his face.He stretched his hand for a handshake, “I'm Ian. Ian Whitefield.”She reluctantly took his hand and shook it. Then before Ian could think of another word to say, she whispered 'bye' and ran off.Sizzle!A short spark flickered as she removed her hand from his. None of them noticed it.He waved in her direction, “Okay. Uhm... See you tomorrow, I guess.”Chapter 5 ~~ Suicide Squad ~~ The woods... The orange sun finally disappeared beneath the horizon as darkness fell almost immediately. The blue moon hung in the cloudless, star dotted sky, glistering in its illuminated ambience. A serene atmosphere reigned throughout Huntsville like a shower of snow flakes. The trees in the woods fluttered in rhythm to the cool flowing wind. The crickets made their presence known with their ululating chirps. The stony-grassy grounds rattled slightly as a Humvee, a police cruiser, and two bikes made their way through the woods, their headlights beaming brightly. Getting to a certain cleared location, the vehicles came to a halt almost simultaneously. Two policemen alighted the white and blue cruiser. They were clad in Huntsville's police uniforms; starched brown shirts, deep brown trousers and black boots. They both had walkie talkies attached to their shoulders. Since they parked behind the Humvee, they had to trot forward and meet up with the o
Chapter 6 ~~ Risky Decision ~~ Huntsville High... Chase slammed his grey locker shut and rested his back on it, before sliding down and sitting on the floor. His blue tank top was drenched in sweat, likewise his whole body. Sighing, he said, “This was by far the worst P.E training. Ever!” “No kidding,” Ian agreed, his voice brimming with exasperation. He also sat on the floor beside Chase; his tank top was red. Chase swept his sweat-wet, auburn hair back with his hand, “We were just used as tools while Ace and his guys displayed their stupid stamina and strength.” “I know, right? Even the girls did better than us,” Ian said with a tint of jealousy. Then he frowned, “Are we really that weak?” Chase looked at him, “What? No! Ace might have called us weak, but he's only strong because he's got the number advantage.” Chase paused and fisted his hands, his brows furrowed, “These babies are enough to take him down if we were to go one on--” “Shush!” Ian quickly covered Chase's mout
Chapter 7 ~~ I Told You So ~~ Ian and Chase lumbered into the class with straight faces. All eyes were on them but they ignored. Well, not totally though. Ian was again staring at Kira, who stylishly shared glances with him as well. Chase pulled him by the hand and they sat down, listening to the English teacher’s teachings. The duo barely lasted ten minutes when their minds trailed off with different emotions. They could no longer hear the teacher’s voice but their inner voices instead. Ian couldn’t wait for the class to end, so he could leave for the woods. He wouldn’t have come to class if not for his consistent attendance. He had this feeling that’s he’d find something interesting in the woods. Something had been drawing there ever since he read the news with Chase a while ago. He didn’t know what or why, but he felt he needed to get there as soon as possible. Maybe he could get answers as to why he’s been having these bizarre dreams of other worlds. While everyone had been in
Chapter 8 ~~ Confrontation ~~ “Ahhh!” Chase screamed like a lady in distress, digging his hands into the soil. The terrified scream didn’t last five seconds before he kept mute and remained frozen. He sat so still, one would have contradicting thoughts to if he was the one that yelled just a few seconds ago. His heaved and heaved, his chest undulating under his clothing, his heart beating at an alarming rate. He was sweating profusely, the growls stinging his ear like needles. It was as though, a tiny speaker was placed in his ears, the terrifying growls emanating from them. Chase was very terrified, even though he hadn’t confirmed what was behind them. Ian wasn’t left out, seated beside Chase and trying all his best to remain sane. He had always been the cool one among them, and was sometimes stoic even when it came to facing threatening factors. But this, this was totally different, on a whole other level. He could somewhat perceive the rage, devastation and killing intent, wi
Chapter 9 ~~ Backlash ~~ “Yeshhh… Yhou aare thhee oneee. Yhou arre Ghordon’s Aeon.”” . . ““I ccaamme tto thiis realm seekking reddemption. Obttaining thhe Aeon’s head andd retturning itt aas a ggift tto Loord Dhamon wouuld be tthhe perrfect wayyy”” . . ‘This realm? Aeon? Me? He’s gonna kill me?’ ~~ Those voices resounded in Ian’s mind, over and over again. He could see himself getting stabbed with the Werewolf’s claws, blood dripping down his torso. The beast lifted him up and opened it mouth to chew his head off. But all of a sudden, Ian finds himself standing far away, completely fine. No blood, no injuries… Then gets stabbed again! And the process repeated itself again and again. It was an endless cycle of death and resurrection. Gasp! Ian jolted awake with a sharp gasp. His eyes were still closed, but all his senses were functioning. He could feel himself lying on a thick foam and a pillow below his head. This familiar feeling made him sigh in relief. He was at home,
Chapter 10 ~~ Reconnaissance ~~ Ian could barely keep his eyes open, as he stood in a vast space of bright white light. The space stretched for over an infinitesimal distance. There was no end, nor a beginning. He felt weightless, yet heavy. Empty, yet full. Lifeless, yet brimming with life. These contradicting feelings made his head throb like his heart was in it. But then again, he felt serenity at the same time. He was greatly perturbed. ‘Where am I?’ ‘What is this place?’ Those would have been his questions, that he usually asked when he found himself here, but no, he had grown self awareness and already knew this was a dream. After about a minute of floating or standing, Ian observed as the scenery changed from a white boundless space to a terrain dotted with tall trees. He brought down his hands from his eyes, rapidly adjusting to the lesser intensity of light. The ground had grasses and rocks coexisting on it. Ian was very familiar with this place. This was in the woods
Chapter 11 ~~ Study Buddies ~~ It was Monday the next week, and Ian was late for school. Clad in a big jean jacket, with a brown top within, black trousers and white sneakers, Ian hopped off his bike and rushed into the school building. He dashed across the hallway and sled on the tiles as he turned left and proceeded forward. Almost reaching the end of the hallway, he stopped with a slide. He comported himself, adjusting his backpack hung behind him and stood in front of a door. His eyelids slowly closed as he let out a sigh. He could hear random chatter from within the classroom. Oof… He sighed again before opening his eyes and pushed the door open. He froze upon entry, the whole class became silent all of a sudden, all eyes on him. But the place was so noisy just some seconds ago. Damn… For them to draw this much attention to someone as socially awkward like him, he must have been really late to class. Ian gulped as the thought ran through his mind. From where he stood, he had
Chapter 12 ~~ What Could Go Wrong? ~~ After the chemistry class, they all proceeded to take other classes till the last period of the day. Ian could barely concentrate all through. The only thing on his mind was that he and Kira were lab partners and they had an assignment at hand. They had agreed to meet at her house after school today. He was tensed. The same thing for Chase. Just that in his case, he was petrified. He was also going to Mia’s house after school today. Saying he was tensed is most likely an understatement. He couldn’t help but imagine if her parents and brothers were like her also; aggressive and nonchalant. ‘What if they’re cannibals? Should I call in sick? No. she’d just drag me along anyways. I have to find a way to avoid her,’ Chase pondered as he and Ian strolled towards their side-by-side lockers. Both of them were silent. They didn’t talk to each other as many anxious thoughts ran through their heads. They opened their lockers in unison, stuffed their book
