UNCOMICAL COMEDY OF ERRORS

Diwana’s face was frozen into this shocked and puzzled expression and it took her a while to actually find her voice to answer the older woman’s question.

“What do you mean, Pat? I don’t understand…”

“I mean, you and him… are you like… a couple?”

“WHAT?! Oh nonononononono… Oh my gosh, we can’t possibly… We’re just landlady and house boarder… Besides, he and I just met and… he knows very little about me… And I know almost nothing about him… Not that THAT matters because I feel he’s very nice… I mean, he’s a nice man… I mean, he’s ok... as a renter… Even as a friend but nooo… He can’t possibly be interested in me… Patricia, just look at him… He probably has so many… women… in the city… or have someone special… already… But not me… definitely… not… me…”

More than hearing what Diwana was babbling about - which eventually turned into a whisper near the end - Pat was more interested in watching the young widow’s face and listening to her tone, pitch, and volume as she gave her answer.
