After school the next day, Leonard took the bus that would head deep into the city instead of his usual route.
He had left home with his mother this morning and promised her countless amount of times to stop at Madame Diane’s house.
In the bus, he leaned his head back and closed his eyes. To anyone, he was sleeping.
However, since the World Dominating System was already in his body, the two skills he had picked could play out in his head.
It was a trance like situation where he felt like he was watching himself watch the course that was playing out.
There was also an option of playing it on a screen but he didn’t have any Bluetooth device and so he decided to use this method to save time.
Since their school was at the edge of the city center, the bus ride took about an hour and Leonard got down.
He glanced down at the paper that contained the new address that his mother had given him one more time to confirm he was at the right street.
After confirming, he scoffed.
This area was even more luxurious than the old place Madame Diane used to stay, and he was certain that she would have people working for her.
However, she always preferred to keep his mother’s services without wanting to pay.
Since this time, she had found a job for her and even sent some things home, Leonard didn’t feel as angry towards her.
Rather, he was planning to keep an open mind and see what would happen when they eventually moved there.
“Number 4, number 7…” Leonard murmured as he checked the house numbers.
When he eventually stopped in front of house number 10, he took a deep breath and then pressed the doorbell.
The security at Madame Diane’s house was different from what he expected, and they led him in as soon as he entered.
Like most of the houses in these estates, Madame Diane’s house was a huge mansion that had a compound space of over 1000 meters.
Even though he was taking it all in, Leonard didn’t make it obvious and matched the pace of the guard that was leading the way.
Every morning and late evening, the system forced him to do strength training even when his body was aching and sore.
He would also listen to the already-sourced lessons on finance and trading the stock market while he was training.
It was almost like he had entered a phase of hellish training, but Leonard didn’t mind, and without knowing, in less than a week, his aura was already sharpening.
There were little physical changes to his body as he would cut back on food despite the difficult training.
Leonard and the guard eventually entered a waiting room, and the guard turned to him.
“Wait here. Our mistress will come down and meet you,” the guard informed.
Leonard nodded and sat down.
There was a large screen in the waiting room that was showing the news, but he barely paid any attention to it and brought out his notes to write down everything he learned while he was on the bus.
“Great guardian, when is my next task going to be? I happen to have some free time,” he asked, thinking about the monetary reward that came from the last time.
The two skills he had picked happened to be high-end skills, and both of them required that he had a high-functioning computer.
Leonard knew that the fastest way for him to make money was through the system, so he wanted to take on as many tasks as possible.
[The system decides when the host is ready for a task spontaneously. The tasks not only make sure that the host cultivates a sense of responsibility and good, they also make sure that the host leaves a possible future reward]
Leonard nodded. Although he was a little confused by the last sentence, he understood the main point.
He couldn’t ask for tasks!
As he wrote out another page of code and program language that he had just learnt, Madame Diane entered the waiting room.
“Leonard!” She exclaimed, surprise flashing through her eyes as she took his appearance in.
The last time she had seen him was about four to five years now. In a school uniform, there was no telling a person’s background, and Leonard’s natural features were highlighted.
“Your mother has put in a lot of effort into raising you,” she said with a sigh, her eyes not leaving him.
Even when his mother was in front of her, she always had the attitude of someone in front of a superior.
However, standing in front of her, Leonard didn’t react like she was anything special. His eyes were focused, and his posture was firm and solid.
It gave her the illusion of looking at a small but solid mountain. She nodded one more time before sitting opposite him.
“Your mother promised that you would come, I thought it would be a struggle, but she mentioned that you were attending Darwin College?”
Although she was stating, her words were also probing. After all, even for someone like her, she had been unable to get her children to enter a school like that before they got richer. Even though that was a few years ago, Darwin’s standards remained as high.
You either had the status or were a genius!
“Yes, I passed their entrance examination top of the list and got a scholarship,”
Her eyes shined even more as she leaned forward. “Leonard, you must be a genius to achieve something like that, and you have been able to maintain your position since?”
Leonard gave her a glance that seemed to say that he understood what she was doing. However, this was also information that she could easily get with her status. So he didn’t hide anything.
“I’m in my senior year, and I have maintained my position since I got my admission.”
He didn’t have a choice. The moment his position or grades slipped, he had to fork out the exorbitant fees.
“Your mother must have done a lot of good deeds in her past life to have a son like you,” her words were good to the ears, but from her tone, Leonard knew that she wasn’t exactly excited for his mother.
“Has your mother told you about staying here? My husband’s company has grown in recent years, and this place is large enough for more people to live comfortably…”
Leonard nodded as Madame Diane went on and on about their new house.
When she was done, she saw the disinterested look on the teenage boy’s handsome face and felt embarrassed.
However, she hid it with a cough to pull Leonard’s attention back to the conversation.
“So, when will you be moving?”
“Why do you want us here?” Leonard finally asked the question that had been on his mind for the last two days.
“Hmmm?” Not expecting he would ask such a question or even have such a reaction to her wanting to help, Madame Diane was stumped.
Her face flushed with anger and embarrassment.
“Do you think this place is not enough for you?”
Leonard nodded sideways as he stood up. “I know that my mother and I would not stay in the main house. All I’m asking is why you want us here…”
Madame Diane was at a loss for words from his reaction. When she had mentioned it to his mother, she had been full of thanks and praise.
She had expected that he had come to do the same thing. So what was this reaction?
Leonard sighed before giving in. “Madame Diane, I’m grateful that you want to help us. However, my mother and I have been managing to get by these past years… if I see that you had ulterior motives for making us move here, then you would regret doing this!”
He didn’t wait one second as he stood up and left.
Even though they didn’t have anything, he had to make this woman understand that he and his mother weren’t a tool that she could treat however way she wanted!
As Leonard walked out of her house, he didn't care if he had been rude or not, one thing was certain, he wouldn't allow her to ridicule him and his mother. His mother could fall for her tricks and acting, but Leonard was able to see things more clearly. Also, he knew that his mother had a naturally kind and agreeable disposition, but he was at least not like her completely. He was quite glad that he had given her that warning, and now, he knew that she would think so much about it before she uttered her mouth to say any more demeaning words.Walking towards his house, the system dinged all of a sudden. Since he was already used to the beeps the system made as soon as a new task was launched, he could guess that he had a new task. [New task activated]Leonard went to a corner of the road to listen to what it had to say. ''What's the task?'' Leonard asked. He wanted to be sure if this was something he could do. Even though he needed the money to get him and his mother by every day,
The silent beep of a machine woke Leonard up that evening. Squinting his eyes open, he was immediately blinded by the bright white light streaming from the chandelier of the room he was in. He groaned, trying to reach out but all he could feel was empty air.''Its okay.'' a voice said.Leonard didn't need to think twice to know that it was his mother's voice. How she had got here and how he had got here too was very strange to him.''Mom?'' he asked.''Yes honey.'' she sighed. Finally, he managed to open his eyes and the first thing he noticed was how white the room was. He was momentarily confused when he saw some machines fixed on him.''You're in the hospital, Leonard. You got severely hit by a thief.''That was when everything came rushing back to him. The system's instructions… the women at the mart… the wait… tackling the thief to the ground and then finally receiving the blow to his head.''The thief…''''Oh don't worry about that honey, he's going to be in jail for a very very
A few hours later, Leonard got discharged from the hospital, and deep within him, he was already feeling much better than how he was before. ''Thank you, nurse.'' Helene smiled at the nurse as they stepped out of the reception area of the hospital. Leonard's mind was already on the project work they were to do, he really hoped that Susan wasn't angry already because he knew that a lot of time had already gone. It was already dark outside and the only thing they could do was to get an Uber that could take them back home.''Mum, we need an Uber,'' he said.''An Uber would be too expensive darling, I'm sure we can get a bus that's going to our route,'' she said.Leonard stopped for a minute to think about what she had just said. He was quite confused because they were supposed to be going to Madame Diane's house but now she said they were going back to their own home which just confused him all the more.''We aren't going to Madame Diane's house?'' Leonard asked. There was a small paus
The next morning, Leonard woke up in high spirits, ready to tackle the day ahead. He had made up his mind to confront Edgar and put an end to the torment once and for all. As the morning sun rose, Leonard got dressed quickly and headed to school, arriving earlier than usual.Walking through the school gates, Leonard couldn't help but notice the beautiful colors of the blooming flowers and the chirping birds in the nearby trees. The environment seemed to reflect his newfound optimism, filling him with a sense of happiness and confidence.Finding a quiet spot on the school lawn, Leonard took a moment to collect his thoughts. He reminded himself of his worth and the strength he possessed especially now that he had a power sitting deep within him. He repeated words of encouragement in his mind, standing on the belief that he didn't have to listen to Edgar's harsh words anymore just because he was a scholarship kid. Today was the day Leonard would stand up for himself and he would make
The speed at which Leonard rushed out of the cafeteria was unlike anything Susan had ever seen in her life. One minute, they had been talking and the next minute, he was running like the wind.''What on earth?'' she murmured. She knew something was going on and she was determined to find out what it was but at that moment she couldn't because she had other pressing things to attend to.Meanwhile, Leonard who was halfway through the hallway raced towards a secluded part of the school, a part where he knew no one could find him. He needed to be alone with the system and better understand what they needed him to do because he had no idea what this next new task would be. They had given him nothing and he knew better than to ask any questions again because he knew that there would be no answers. Once the system had given him an instruction, it was left for him to follow through with it without fail.''But why the rush?'' Leonard asked as he got to the boy's locker room.He was smart an
Still hiding behind the shrubs, Edgar looked around one more time before walking towards the laboratory. By this time, no one was around, he could easily gain access without any hindrance but Leonard was determined to stop him. He came out of hiding, staring straight ahead before walking towards the building, His strides were long and precise and Leonard had to keep up with him lest he loses him. He needed to know what he was after and he wasn't going to stop until he knew what he was up to. Soon, Edgar gained entrance into the building. Once in, Leonard walked further to where he had first seen him hiding. He quickly looked around, trying to see if he had dropped something, anything that could give him a hint as to why Edgar was roaming the school grounds when he should have been in class. The ground was free as it should be. Th
''What happened?'' Leonard asked. ''You don't remember that happened?'' the nurse asked. ''Just bits and pieces, that's all,'' he said. ''Well, that's not a surprise. Smoke inhalation has been known to cause memory loss but not to worry, you'll be alright in no time.'' she smiled. Leonard sighed, resting his head on his pillow. He couldn't deny the fact that he was very tired, tired of everything that had happened. It was one thing to attend school without any problems and another thing to encounter various problems even while schooling and Leonard hoped that the next task he undertook was relatively easier than this.
''This is very terrible,'' Leonard said.He stood amidst the charred remains of the science lab, an emotion of sadness washing over him. The strong smell of smoke lingered in the air, and the once-vibrant room now lay in ruins. The sight of his most loved experiments destroyed and his hard work reduced to ashes left him with a profound sense of loss. In his spare time, he would always come here to meet the laboratory master and assist him in performing experiments. As Leonard surveyed the wreckage, his thoughts turned to Edgar. For as long as he could remember, Edgar had always made his life miserable, but this act of destruction had crossed a line.Anger swelled within Leonard's heart, fueling a n
