First Task

Ignoring the gossip around school, Leonard left as soon as the first bell rang. Unlike before, he now had a mobile phone and he felt that communicating with Susan would be easier.

He wanted to find some odd works to do when he got home and then begin studying for the competition.

As he crossed the street, the robotic voice of the system rang out in his mind.

[First task assigned to host! Completing this task would award a cash bonus of $1000 and +10 domination points which can be used by the host]

Leonard stopped, his legs becoming heavy in the middle of the road from pure shock.

Even though he had decided that the system was a bonus trainer this morning when he did the training, there was a little bit of fear left from what happened earlier with the system.

But now he heard, $1000?

For someone like him, a thousand dollars was an amount that he would spend about a month or two to save up to that amount because they still had things that they couldn’t avoid spending now.

But one task was going to give him that amount?

“What is the task?” He asked after he had gotten his voice back.

[Host must stop a kidnapping plan that is about to happen 300 meters away from here. And get the target to safety.]

After that little bit of instructions, the system became silent, saying nothing again.

Leonard was also someone with a very high IQ and understood that he was not getting anything more. Instead of wasting time, he started to walk forward, double-checking each pedestrian carefully for anything suspicious.

Before going further, he entered a small mart and got a wooden baseball bat. With his uniform, he didn’t look suspicious and some of the people in the area that were already familiar with him even greeted him.

He walked for about 200 meters before he slowed down and became even more careful.

On instinct, as he saw two men talking with each other, he decided to follow them instead.

Keeping some distance away, he entered the store that they just went into and saw that they were just two normal friends arguing over what tool they were going to buy.

However, just as Leonard turned to leave them and search again, one of the two men spoke up.

“Do you think that only Stella can handle him? The guy had been trained by his family for a while now.” One of them said and Leonard hurriedly bent down, pretending like he wanted to lace his shoes properly.

None of the two men said anything as they discussed it between themselves.

“She’s a beauty. Tell me what kind of man would refuse a woman like that?”

“I still think it’s better to be closer to her, after all, this time, they have requested that the work must be perfect.” The second man said as the both of them left the store.

Leonard hurriedly bought a pack of milk and rushed out of the store. He sighed in relief as he saw the two of them ahead and then slowed down, putting the milk in his bag.

Not too long after, they turned round a corner and entered a bookstore.

Instead of entering, Leonard stayed outside and surveyed the surroundings. After confirming that they were only just three and that there was no one else watching out for them, he hid in a corner of the bookstore.

Not long after, a young boy that looked around Leonard’s age walked out with a woman behind him.

One look and anyone would see that the young man was trying his best to avoid the woman who was clearly older than him.

Leonard took all of this in. At this point, he was certain that this was the person the system wanted him to save.

And this one person escaping safely also determined if he was going to get his thousand dollars or not.

While the two men were stalking the boy and woman, Leonard also followed from a reasonable distance.

Right before they got to an alley, the boy in front turned around and glared fiercely at the woman.

“I have no interest in a woman like you! If you don’t stop following me at this moment, I’ll beat you up and leave you for the police,”

The lady acted like she didn’t hear his words.

“All I’m asking for is to give me your phone number, surely, that can’t be too hard, no?”

The boy sneered, his still young features giving a look that seemed more like a pout.

“I don’t want to have anything to do with you….” Before he could say another word, the two men that had been hiding behind them lunged out, catching the boy off guard.

Despite the fear that showed in his eyes for a split moment, the boy instantly got into a fighting stance.

He scoffed, “So this was a plan all along?”

Leonard watched everything from the corner where he was hidden. With them being three against one, he was sure that there was no way the boy could handle them.

He could also see that they were trained fighters at the very least which meant that his interference might not be enough to spoil their sinister plan.

“Should have known that the price was too good to be true,” Leonard cursed in his mind as he watched the fierce exchange in front of him.

The boy was also not a weakling and was able to stand his ground against the three of them. But he was bound to run out of power eventually.

Using the shadows to move, Leonard closed in on the four of them. Having being raised by his mother all his life, Leonard didn’t have the heart to touch the woman who seemed to be the weakest there.

Instead, he struck out accurately with the baseball bat at one of the men’s heads.

The other three froze for a minute as one of them fell to the ground.

Hope lit up in the boy’s eyes as he saw Leonard.

“Stella, handle the kid, I’ll take care of this brat!” The second trained fighter said as he lunged at Leonard.

Leonard stepped back, he was no match for a trained fighter and all he could do was help them save time by running away.

The kidnapper was faster than him and grabbed him almost immediately.

“Who are you and why you are meddling in our matters?” He asked fiercely.

“Someone that believes that evil people like you shouldn’t exist,” Leonard spat out as he sent a kick to the man’s lower body.

His reaction was swift and he grabbed Leonard’s leg before it could land on him.

However, he would never have imagined that the boy they had been sent to kidnap would have defeated Stella quickly enough to join hands here.

Up until the blow was delivered to the back of his neck, he hadn’t sensed anyone’s presence.

“Thank you,” the boy said as he watched the three lying on the floor.

“I would have been overpowered if it was only for me.” He added right after as he stretched his hands out for Leonard.

“It’s nothing, I just thought to lend a hand.”

Since this was just a task, Leonard dashed off quickly, not wanting to be a party to anything that would happen after.

Right as soon as he left the scene, the familiar ding rang in his mind.

[First Task accomplished, Host has now been awarded a thousand dollars and 15 system points.]

[Also, the host has been granted access to explore the system’s database and section belonging to the first level.]

As soon as he heard the rewards, Leonard’s face lit up with a smile.

$1000 for that? “Really a good deal.” He murmured to himself.

With a face brimming with smiles, he walked to the bus stop and boarded the available bus.
