A normal day had just ended at Valley Technological High School. Most of the students were on their way home. Some stayed behind for club activities. Others walked with friends, laughing and enjoying youth, while a few strolled hand in hand with their lovers.
From the window of her classroom, Amber gazed out, admiring the peaceful view.
She always wished every day could be like this—quiet, beautiful, untouched by chaos.
Today, Amber remained in the classroom because she was on cleaning duty.
Normally, another student would be paired with her, but they had to leave early due to an emergency, leaving her alone with the task.
Amber played the role of the kind, model student. Always polite, always friendly.
Cleaning the classroom was easy work, so she didn’t mind. But what weighed on her heart was something far more serious—the threat of another terrorist attack. Rumors said it would be much bigger than before.
If the terrorists attacked again, this peaceful city would be thrown into chaos. The scenery she loved so much would be shattered.
Amber couldn’t allow that to happen.
Hours passed. The warm orange sky faded into deep night. Silence fell over the school. The building was empty—except for Amber, sitting on the classroom window railing, waiting.
Like she is waiting for someone.
Amber was right.
Someone just arrived.
It was odd to have someone visit the classroom in this hour, but Amber was already expecting this.
“It’s been seven years, hasn’t it?”
Amber said softly, turning her eyes toward the figure entering the room.
The classroom was dark, but the silhouette was unmistakable. Amber recognized her immediately.
“Yeah… it’s been a long, long time,” the girl replied.
She wore a simple white dress. Her ashen hair shimmered under the moonlight. Her face was beautiful—angelic, almost. At first glance, she seemed incapable of harm.
But Amber knew better that the girl is up to no good.
“Yuki,” Amber whispered her name.
“I’ve long thrown that name away. I go by Saint White now. I think you’ve heard of me. Well, first of all, I was greatful that you waited for me all alone. YOu never break promise like when we are still kids. That is something I love about you.”
“I have no time for chatter” Amber replied. “I know about all your doings. I’m a dark side agent now. We’re usually the one cleaning up your mess in the city. So tell me—why are you doing this? What’s your goal?”
Saint White stepped closer, calm and graceful.
“My goal is simple,” she said. “I want to rid the world of abilities and return the world back to purity. What good have these powers brought us? Only pain. Only suffering. You know it, too. The way they experimented on us as children... it’s unforgivable.”
She reached out her hand.
“Amber, you’re my friend. I know you understand. Join me. Help me fix the world.”
Amber looked at her.
“I appreciate the sentiment. But no thanks. Surrender now, Yuki—before I burn you to ash.”
“Oof. Scary,” Saint White said with a smile. “But you know I’m not an easy opponent. You know me better than anyone—we were childhood friends, after all. You’re my friend, I don’t want to kill you.”
“Too bad,” Amber said coldly. “I’m ready to kill you.”
Without hesitation, Amber ignited in flame and launched a devastating fireball. It blasted through the classroom window with intense force.
When the smoke cleared, Saint White stood unharmed, smiling.
Amber wasn’t surprised—but it was worth trying.
She didn’t know exactly how White’s ability worked, but she had some idea.
“I told you,” White said. “I won’t kill you.”
Suddenly, a tall, muscular man appeared behind Amber. His face was covered with a paper bag, with a single hole cut out for vision.
“But I’ll let someone else do it,” White said.
Amber spun around, flames bursting from her hands as she launched another attack. The man resisted the flames and countered with a brutal punch, sending Amber flying through the window.
She fell from the fourth floor—but ignited her flames mid-air to slow the impact, landing on her feet.
Before she could recover, the man launched himself like a rocket, headbutting the ground near her. The shockwave cracked the earth. He grabbed her arm and slammed her into the ground with inhuman strength.
“Do you think that’s enough to break me?!” Amber shouted.
She retaliated with a blazing punch to his face, followed by a flame-boosted kick that sent him flying.
Amber looked up at Saint White, who stood calmly on the fourth floor.
“Is that the best you’ve got, Yuki?!”
White clapped slowly, her expression unreadable.
“Bravo. That strength of yours… it’s why I want you to join me. But it’s too bad—you still haven’t awakened. You still think protecting this city matters.”
“I’ll beat some sense into you,” Amber said, her fists ablaze. “You’re hurting innocent people.”
“I’m not going to fight you. I don’t want my hands stained with my childhood friend’s blood,” White said. “But since we’re not seeing eye to eye… I’ll let my creatures handle you.”
“Creatures?”
The muscular man stood up again—and something stirred inside him. From within his body, several monstrous beings emerged, their twisted forms snarling with bloodlust.
“What the hell?”
“Chimeras,” White said. “They were created right here in this city. Experiments, like us. This is the truth you’re protecting.”
“I’ll burn them all to ash!”
Amber attacked, but the flames had no effect.
“What…?”
“They’re flame-resistant,” White said smugly. “I know you rely solely on your pyrokinesis. That’s why you’ll die here, Amber.”
Amber gritted her teeth and fought back. She stopped using her fire offensively and began boosting her speed and strength instead. With each flame-powered punch and kick, she fought to survive.
But the chimeras were too strong. Her strength alone wasn’t enough.
She pulled out her phone to call for backup—but it exploded in her hand, shattering into pieces.
“No…!”
Saint White’s finger pointed toward her.
“I won’t let you escape.”
Amber’s breath trembled.
“What… is your ability, really?”
White smirked. “Now, now. A girl has to keep some secrets. But there is one way out of this alive.”
She reached out her hand again.
“Join me, Amber. That’s the only path to survival.”
Amber declined the offer and clenched her fists tightly, her knuckles glowing with the heat of her flames.
“Never. I’d rather die with my beliefs than live by your twisted ideals.”
“So be it…” Saint White whispered, her angelic face unchanged, untouched by Amber’s defiance.
The chimera attack again.
Amber retaliated, kicking off the ground with blazing speed, launching another series of flame-enhanced punches and kicks.
Her movements blurred with fiery trails, striking with the force of a raging inferno. But the chimera were unrelenting. Every blow she landed only slowed them for a moment before they resumed their monstrous advance. They were durable, crafted for war, bred in shadows.
One of them struck her with its massive clawed arm, sending her crashing through a nearby wall. Dust filled the air. Her breath hitched. Her arms trembled.
Amber stood, blood trailing from her lips, but her legs buckled. She barely had time to react as another chimera charged at her, pummeling her to the floor. She tried to rise—but the strength in her limbs was fading. Her flames flickered weakly, barely lighting the dark.
One chimera raised its arm. Its claws gleamed in the moonlight. It struck downward—
Time slowed.
Amber’s eyes widened. She saw her reflection in the creature’s claws. Her own terrified face. And in that split second, everything went quiet. Her surroundings faded into white.
Amber has the past flashing before her eyes.
Amber saw a younger version of herself running through a field with Yuki under the blue sky. She remembered the laughter. The way Yuki smiled at the flowers they picked. The promises they made always to protect each other.
These sweet memories.
She remembered how Yuki held her hand through it all, whispering they’d escape together that they'd survive.
Amber came back to reality.
The chimera’s claws were inches from her heart.
“I won’t die here!” Amber roared. Her body flared with heat so intense it melted the ground beneath her. A dome of flames exploded around her, forcing the chimera back. Her eyes burned red. Her body ignited from head to toe.
“I’ll burn my limits… and surpass them!” she shouted.
Saint White's expression shifted for the first time—eyes narrowing slightly, lips curving downward into a faint frown.
Amber slammed her fists together, creating shockwaves of heat, and launched herself at the chimera again, faster and stronger than before. Her kicks broke bones. Her punches shattered their thick hides. She fought not just with power, but desperation, determination, and the hope of keeping the city safe.
But the battle wasn’t over. Amber fell to one knee, panting heavily.
More Chimeras were approaching Amber.
And Saint White… still stood above, watching.
“You’re strong, Amber,” she said softly. “But this is the end…”
“I can’t lose… I’ll save you, Yuki.”
Amber muttered.

Hearing her say my name—it was something I thought I’d never experience again. Our interaction was stiff. Awkward. There were so many things I wanted to ask, so many things I wanted to say… but my lips wouldn’t move. The silence between us was getting heavy, almost suffocating.“Mio… Why did you come?” I asked, still unable to meet her gaze.Mio glanced slightly to her left, avoiding my eyes the same way I was avoiding hers. This had to be hard for her too. No doubt.I needed to end this awkwardness somehow.“Your little sister still thinks you and I are together,” she said, holding up a paper bag. “She made a mistake and sent a parcel to my place again. I came here to deliver it.”She handed the paper bag over carefully.“Thanks… Sorry for the trouble. I’ll explain everything to my sister soon.”“No need,”
Chapter 11: Improvement
The alarm clock rings, waking me up.The morning air was still chilly, but the sunlight streaming through my window made my body feel warmer than it should. My muscles ached from yesterday’s work and school, and every fiber of my being longed to stay in bed just a little longer. With a groggy sigh, I pushed myself up and stumbled toward the window, pulling the curtain shut. The room dimmed instantly, the invading light replaced by soothing darkness. Satisfied, I collapsed back onto my bed, burying myself under the sheets.I didn’t want to get up. I wanted to stay home and sleep. Just for today, I wanted a day off.Almost a month had passed since I met Amber and the other girls, and my life had changed in ways I hadn’t expected. Rest had become a luxury. I wasn’t even an official part of their team yet, which meant I wasn’t going on missions with them. Instead, I was stuck doing menial work—cleaning, running errands, and whatever odd jobs they assigned to me.It annoyed me.And yet, de
