CHAPTER 1: UNEXPECTED BETRAYAL

The wide muscular body stood at the age-old center of a mall, staring up at the billboard as it announced the early news in the morning. He was on his way to carry out the errands of his mother-in-law when the sudden news that’s gotten the whole city in an uproar made him stop.

" We are live at the City Hall of the Gilbert where a lot of evidence was found for embezzlement and drug trafficking. News has it that the last child of the Gilbert, Mr. David Gilbert is the one handling the company where these evidence was found. billions of dollars, gold bars, drugs that are highly prohibited in the country and files supporting the indications of money laundering. "

" What the fuck is this? Okay! I know he’s hungry for money but he can’t do this just for money? This is so stupid! " He finally uttered, shaking his head in disbelief as his eyes glued to the billboard. Then, his phone made a loud buzz from his pocket, startling those beside him who are also watching the news.

He quickly bring it out and it turns out to be an old phone that’s not worth showing outside. Those beside him looked at him from head to toe and finally realized how much of a pauper he is. Without minding the stares, he picked up the phone and the next thing that came from the other end is a loud yell;

" Giovanni, you worthless thing! How dare you stay out there without having a plan of coming home? Don’t worry about running any errands, just get your motherfucking ass and get here right now!!! " That’s his mother-in-law and he is Giovanni Smith. The live-in-son-in-law of the Gilbert family.

Yeah.. the same Gilbert family that’s been announced on the billboard. Giovanni is the poorest of the thing on Earth. His everyday life is based on the Gilbert’s expenses. He was married to Florence Gilbert by the head of the Gilbert family because the man finds Giovanni to be a responsible man.

The Gilbert was once sweet towards Giovanni and that was when the head of family was alive but after his demise, he became their errand boy, rather than a son-in-law. Giovanni never for once felt bad about this because among the Gilbert’s, there are Florence Gilbert who is his wife and the eldest son, Hudson Gilbert. These two are the reason Giovanni sees all the sufferings he’s going through as nothing.

Although Florence and Giovanni hasn’t been intimacy for once, the love the two has been showing one another has been the best thing they could ever ask for. Giovanni never really cares about people’s opinions on his wife and him. He just finds everything he’s ever asked for in his wife and he cares about nothing left.

" How dare you bastard reach here a second late? " Giovanni’s mother-in-law, Sarah yelled authoritatively, glaring hard at Giovanni who just has a simple smile on. He finally entered the house, dropping the bag on the table in the dining area and asked;

" Mother… "

" How dare you call me mother? You worthless human being… I can never give birth to a son who has nothing useful to contribute on Earth… " Sarah interrupted harshly, making Giovanni gulp.

" I’m sorry mothe… "

*Slap! * He didn’t get the chance to complete whatever he has to say when a resounding slap hit his left cheek, making him go pale. He couldn’t even frown or make any retaliative expression, he just had to endure and now, he’s starting to wonder where his wife might be.

His head went low as he controlled the urge of fighting back. Since date, he’s hated his mother-in-law so bad that sometimes, he just wish she dies somewhere and never be found. She’s the most irritating person to him after their grandmother and all other ones.

" You better don’t continue this your shitty behavior or else, it’ll make life worse for you in the nearest future. Keep your head low like this and follow me to the hall. " Sarah muttered, glaring daggers at Giovanni who released a heavy sigh as he watch her go ahead of him. His fists clenched into tight balls as he bit his inner cheeks, cussing at Sarah inwardly.

He’s used to all other people humiliating him and their sass words to him but he can never get used to his mother-in-law’s. she’s one kind of a person that’ll do everything to separate him from her daughter and what’s meant by anything is going extra miles. There was a time she set her daughter up with some wealthy heirs and when Florence disagreed, she avoided her for three weeks straight.

" Oh! Baby… you’re here. " Florence’s voice brought him back to reality. He looked up from the ground and a small pure smile settled on his lips on seeing the most attractive lady he’s ever set his eyes on. Her curvy shape giving the best out of her, her well-gelled pony tail, dangled behind her and her facials giving the most beautiful features any lady could ever ask for.

" What is this? What happened to your cheek? " Florence asked, staring worriedly at Giovanni’s cheeks. She touched it and made a sour face like she’s the one feeling the pain, then, she faced her mother sharply;

" Mom! is this your doing? " The anger in her voice is so clearly obvious that anyone coming from afar could hear it. she’s the type with a crazy anger issue. Sarah rolled eyes on seeing how much her daughter cares. She was about to talk when they heard the clicking of a walking stick approach them.

The three stood in front of seats near them, composing themselves as they await the witch that’s about to appear. Giovanni thought the news would have made the cops put David behind bars but it turns out he’s still in the house feeling free.

Mrs. Gilbert took her seat first before gesturing them all to sit which they immediately did and like the person she is, she stated; " Almost everyone of us here knows what this meeting is about and I think Giovanni is the only one who’s unaware so, that’s why your presence is most important. "

-Why does this feel off? My presence is most important? In this family? Pftt… as if, something really seems off. Giovanni couldn’t stop thinking as he contemplate on what’s really up to deserve his attention.

" It’s simple as ABC and even if you’re not going to accept, there’s nothing we can do about it because everything has been arranged. " Mrs. Gilbert smile, her eyes on Giovanni who’s expression is filled with confusion. He wanted to ask what the matter is about when the cops entered;

" Mr. Giovanni Smith? " They called and Giovanni’s brows twitched into a frown. He raised his hand up for identification and two cops walked to him with a handcuffs.

" You are under arrest for drug trafficking, money laundering, embezzlement and abuse of authority. You have the right to remain silent or whatever you say or do will be used against you in the court of law. " Giovanni went dumbstruck immediately as he was cuffed, not understanding a thing that’s going on.

He looked around and met his wife smiling face; " Bye-bye, husby! Enjoy the rest of your worthless life in jail. "
