Jack felt his bones snap as his memories began to fade away. He knew he was becoming a zombie. He wanted to take Rick's gun as he shot himself in the head, but it was too late. The gun fell from his hands, and he snarled gently. His eyes were becoming whitish as he became a zombie.

The snarling sound of the horde woke Rick up. A system message immediately appeared right in front of him.

[SYSTEM TASK: REACH THE SAFE ZONE BEFORE TONIGHT]

[SYSTEM REWARD; REUNITE WITH FAMILY]

Rick looked back and saw that the zombies were gaining in on him. He immediately tried to reach for his gun, but then he saw it on the floor, right in front of Jack. "Pass me the gun, Jack." Rick whispered, not trying to draw the horde to themselves. Jack looked back, and Rick was frightened. He had turned and was just eating a seat antelope in front of him. Rick jumped to his feet as he kept hearing the firing of gunshots. He knew he had to leave the forest and find Lisa.

The zombies came at Rick as he took a s

Rick tried to stall for some time as he kept praying the zombie jack should come in their direction. "I was just following orders as you would if you were in my shoes. Nothing personal, man." Rick said this with his hand up in the air. "You had my life in a mess, and now I am going to take yours." Patrick said he was about to shoot Rick. Jack's snarl got closer, and Patrick looked back to take a shot at him. Rick rushed at him, making him miss his target. He immediately had him pinned down and kicked in the gut. Jack snarled towards Rick, and he pushed him at Patrick. Rick locked the door as he heard the loud noise of Patrick being eaten by Jack. Rick knew the world they lived in was either you were killed by the zombie or your fellow human killed you. He wasn't going to allow any of them. He was going to show humanity and rescue his family. He remembered the system had given him until nightfall. Rick wondered what might go wrong if he couldn't make it to his family that night. He

Rick looked at Mark, and he could hardly believe it was him. He was looking more handsome than ever. The two men hugged themselves as they looked at each other. Rick was awfully rough, and his beard was unshaved. "What about my wife? My child?" Rick looked at his friend. "Do you plan on seeing them like this?" Mark asked, looking at his face. "What is wrong with me?" Rick looked at himself and back at Lisa. "You don't plan on going to see your family like that. did you?" Lisa asked, squeezing her face. "And why are you having your face covered?" Mark asked "She isn't feeling too good. She doesn't want to spread the flu." Rick defended. "What flu? Is she having the bite?" Mark asked, taking a step back. Mark immediately ordered one of the men to seize Lisa. "No, she is fine. It is just cold. She would be fine with proper medicine." Rick replied, looking at Mark. There was suspense in the air as Mark and Rick looked at themselves. "Don't you trust me anymore? I said she was fine." R

Rick looked back at Mark as he stepped gently up the staircase. He gazes up each time to see if his wife is peeping or waiting for him. Rick remembered the last time he saw her and held his breath. The noise and sound of the siren echoing back in his head as if it were yesterday. He looked at the door separating him from reuniting with his family, and he took a deep breath. Rick held the knob and pulled it down. He saw his wife gently seated on the couch before him with a magazine in her hands. He stood gently looking at her and didn't know what to say to her or do. " Dad?" A boy around the age of ten squeezed his eyes as he stared at Rick, who was lost. " Jeol." Rick said back, not believing to see his son standing before his very eyes. Jeol sprinted and ran into his open arms, asking Rick's wife to turn and look in the direction of where Jeol went. Martha almost fainted when she saw Rick standing in front of the door. Mark said with disdain in his voice. " Everything?" Grimgar said with a wild laughter. Mark looked at Rick and back at his face. " Yes, I have always given you the very best of the kingdom fruits and food." Mark said again making Grimgar angrier. " And what if I said you are not doing enough. The other kingdoms give twice what you are giving and now our leader has decided that he wants more of everything that you are given." Grimgar looked at his men, " I need twenty stronger men and twenty strong women in the kingdom. I am sure Lord Bealish will be more than happy to have some new women wait on him." " And where do you think you are going?" Rick said with anger coursing through him. " Wow! I love him already." Grimgar said with a smile. Rick banged the metal on the wall, and the zombie turned around to face him. He shot a round of bullets toward it, and it fell down dead. "I think that is the last one." One of the men said, looking at my face, and I nodded. "Is everyone alright?" I asked, looking around, and I saw I couldn't find Lisa. "Tell Mark that the people need to know that a war is coming. Grimgar escaped, and we don't know what he might do when he comes back." I said it hastily and ran to find Lisa. Rick's heart pounded in his chest as he ran fast. He knew if they were going to cure the earth and get rid of the zombies, Lisa had a part to play in all of it. He ran towards the door, and he met the gate open. The loud snarl of the zombies could be heard as they moved in a particular direction. Rick asked looking around Mark sighed, " We have men who are going to lay down their life for the community." He replied " What about your friend? Can she help?" The women prepared wooden stakes while the men trained the children and fellow men in combat in readiness for the impending attack. As the preparations for the impending battle ramped up, the community buzzed with an intense energy. The air was thick with the scent of wood shavings and sweat as the women skillfully sharpened wooden stakes, piling them up for the defense lines. The men, meanwhile, constructed makeshift barricades, stacking logs and stones to fortify the perimeter. Every person in the community, reg

Rick walked back into his room to meet his wife. Martha was dishing out the food when he walked in. The tension was high between the two of them. Ever since Rick was back, Martha had not been granting him an audience. He walked into the kitchen and stood by the door. "What is it, honey?" Ever since I got back, it looked like you were not happy to finally reunite with me." Rick said, looking at her from behind. "I am sorry; I just can't believe that you are finally back. We have waited for a long time for you to come back, and you didn't." Martha turned back and looked at him. "I tried to come back. When I woke up from the hospital, everything was a mess, and I could barely make sense of everything that had been happening." Rick said he was trying to defend himself. "A lot has changed ever since then. I am now." Martha was about to say something, but then they heard a knock at the door. "Who is it?" Rick furrowed his eyebrows. They were in the midst of a very important topic. Joel

The weeks that followed Joel’s death were a blur of blood, fire, and vengeance. Rick’s grief became his fuel. Lisa barely spoke, haunted eyes fixed on nothing, her body moving only because Rick insisted they couldn’t stop—not now. Not after what Joel had lost. They found temporary refuge in an abandoned comms outpost. There, Rick discovered that the system inside him—whatever synthetic, parasitic technology it was—had fused with his DNA. His blood had mutated. It was the first spark of hope they’d had in months. Word traveled fast. Survivors across sectors whispered of a man with blood that burned the virus away. The resistance, previously fractured and demoralized, rallied around that hope—and around Rick. They named him The Living Cure. But Rick had only one goal: Gregor. The Final Siege. The resistance mounted a full-scale assault on Compound Zero—Gregor’s fortress, where the virus was born. The sky was ash-gray that morning, wind carrying the scent of smoke and death. Rick

The entire compound pulsed with a dreadful urgency. Sirens wailed in bursts, like a dying animal's cry. Red lights throbbed above, casting shadows that twisted like phantoms across the walls. Rick’s breath tore from his lungs as he sprinted down the stairwell, two steps at a time. The loud noise of the siren was getting too loud that Rick was worried it was going to attract the zombies. The system’s words echoed in his mind, hollow and inescapable. He didn’t know what Phase One meant—only that it started with him. That Joel, Lisa... they were in danger now. He burst into the hallway, shoving aside a dazed technician who barely noticed him. The ground trembled beneath his boots again, a rhythmic, unnatural shake, like something was moving—no, breathing—beneath them. Gunshots cracked from somewhere deep within Sector Twelve. Rick didn’t stop. His legs pumped faster, the corridor a blur until he skidded to a halt in front of Lisa’s door. His knuckles rapped hard once. “Lisa! It’s me!

  • Chapter thirty seven

It has been quite a while the system contacted Rick. He was even beginning to think the system was something he had imagined. Rick face was pale. The digital message hung in the air like a phantom, glowing faintly in green light—no visible screen, no projection source. Just suspended, like the system itself was embedded into reality. Lisa stepped back, startled. “What the hell is that?” Rick didn’t respond immediately. His eyes remained locked on the message as it slowly began to fade, leaving a trail of eerie silence behind it. The system was back. After weeks—maybe months—of nothing, it was speaking to him again. And it had been watching. “Rick?” Lisa asked again, more cautiously this time. “It’s the system,” he muttered, the weight of it hitting him like a freight train. “It knows I found the files.” “You think it’s...alive?” “I don’t know. But it’s sentient enough to time that message.” He turned to her. “This changes everything.” “Does Gregor know about it?” Rick’s j

Rick moved like a shadow through the dim hallway, every footstep deliberately light as he followed the faint rustling sound that had caught his ear moments earlier. The hairs on the back of his neck stood up—this part of the compound was supposed to be locked down and empty. But he knew what he’d heard. He passed the ammunition room door and turned down a narrow corridor few used anymore. The lights here were faint, flickering with age, barely illuminating the dusty floor and the webs clinging to the corners. He paused near an old utility panel. Something about the wall didn’t sit right—it jutted out just slightly, unevenly with the others.Rick pressed his palm against it and felt a vibration behind the wall. Not the hum of machinery—but the hollow stillness of a space beyond. He ran his fingers along the edge until he found a small indent. He pried it open with the edge of his knife. With a groan, the panel gave way, revealing a narrow entrance cloaked in darkness.Drawing his flas

He moved slowly, his breathing controlled, eyes scanning every inch of the dim hallway that stretched out ahead of him.He paused near a storage closet, his instincts tugging. Something wasn’t right. Then he saw it—just past a rack of old farming tools, a thin sliver of light seeping through the cracks of what looked like a wall panel. Rick pressed his hand against the wooden surface and gave it a nudge. Nothing. He pushed harder, and the panel gave way with a low groan, revealing a narrow passage behind it.Rick hesitated for only a second before stepping inside. The passageway was narrow and dust-coated, the air thick with age and secrets. He followed the dim path, brushing cobwebs aside, until it opened into a

Rick looked at Lisa as she took off her clothes. He could see some marks visibly seen on her backs and of course her body was looking more of a zombie than a human form. It was whitish but Rick doesn't look like he cared. Lisa looked into the mirror and saw he was staring. " Are you worried or is that a way of showing something else?" Rick turned away, " I am sorry. I didn't mean to startle you." He replied. " It is fine." Lisa replied walking closer to him. She knew Rick had been on his own for a time now and it was normal he felt that way. She got closer to him and gently placed her hands on his cheeks. Her head moved closer to his face for a bit, she was about to kiss him when the door opened with Joel walking in with a school bag slung across his shoulder. " Morning, Dad." He greeted both Lisa and his father. " Morning, son. Are you ready to go to school?" Rick smiled at him and he nodded. " Can aunty Lisa take me to school today?" The boy asked staring at Lisa who

Rick looked at Lisa and back at his face, " Well,if you promise to give us our own space. We promise we won't be a bother." Rick replied. " You are welcome to stay as long as you want." Gregor replied and walked away. Lisa watched as he closed the door behind them and she removed the cloth on her face. " Do you think we are going to be safe here?" Rick looked at Jeol lying on the bed and back at Lisa. " We have to be, there is no place we can run to. Everywhere is swarmed with the crawlers. We need to keep our heads low for a bit." Rick replied walking towards Joel's bedside. " What about, Mark? Do you think he is just going to let you be?" Lisa looked at his face. " I don't give a fuck about him. I think
