The following day, Goldberg arrives early to class before his lecture starts. His eyes land on Gold’s table immediately and he feels instantly drawn to it. Goldberg walks slowly past the row of chairs, admiring Gold’s face for a few moments before sitting down next to him. Before leaving his apartment the previous day, Goldberg had decided that he couldn’t sleep anymore – too nervous about meeting his mother and about what she was going to do once she learns about the conversation he had had with her the night before. Goldberg stands in a deserted Kitchen which was dark, as it was run by rats. The smell of rotten food hangs over the place like an old blanket. There is nothing there other than garbage piles in the corner where the sinks are and the walls. No windows let any light in. A couple of lights flicker here and there but they don't work so Goldberg can only make out vague shadows around him from the lack of natural light.
