Chapter 31
Elijah bobbed his head in silent appreciation, as she disappeared without a trace. Turning off his phone, it went back to his pockets. He walked out of the room, closing the door behind him. As he walked away, he realized the spirits had gone quiet. They really didn't like the light. Just as she had instructed him to do, he paused at the staircase, going behind it instead. His heart skipped a beat, when his gaze landed on the spirit herbs. For herbs growing in such a dark place, with hardly any sunlight, they looked really healthy. He bent, and picked a few. "Thank you." He whispered into the sky, before turning around and leaving. When he entered the living room again, Winnie sat with her head on her raised legs. She felt his presence, and raised her head up. "You're back." She tried a smile, but it came out weak. For a brief second, he just stared at her. He was beginning to realize something almost too painful to bear. There was no doubt in his mind now she was the pure heart,

Streams of light sneaked through tiny spaces in the window blinds, reflecting on Elijah's face. He lay silently on the bed, with his hands folded behind his head, looking up to the ceiling. He had been in that same position for the past two hours, just deep in thought. So far, he had found two herbs without much hassle. Something told him it wasn't going to be this easy going forward. The old woman's words kept playing in his ears too. As much as he wanted to disregard them, he knew who he was deep down. How long, before someone else found out?Elijah's phone began to ring, and he turned toward the direction the sound was coming from. Reluctantly, he straightened up and grabbed the device on his bed table. "What do you want?" He asked, as soon as he answered the call."You should be nicer to people who help you, you know?" An airy voice at the end of the line said."Did you send the hooded man last night?" He asked, his face contorting with irritation."Why would I do something

"A god?" He leaned closer to inspect the ring. It was an ugly design by aesthetic. That wasn't an important factor though. At least not as important as what it could supposedly do. He couldn't deny the fact he was curious. "What does it do?""It enhances one's strength and knowledge." Dr Banes cheesed proudly."How?" "A very complicated process. Brain waves, chemical compounds, spirit herbs. Every aspect of life you can think of was used to make this beauty.""Dad?" He started, unsure of how to go about the question he was going to ask."Yes, son." Dr Banes, detecting the seriousness in his son's voice, looked up."What do you know about the supernatural?" He asked. He watched his father's face change into different expressions all at once. There had always been some unspoken words in the family. Strange occurrences they pushed aside, even before he left Quantum City. Now he was back. Although temporary, he needed to know the truth once and for all."Elijah," He began. "Are

It was 7 pm when Elijah arrived at the Indigo restaurant. He quickly found Rhonda already waiting for him. She tried hard, but couldn't help the smile that slipped as she watched him approach her. Had he become even more handsome? Her mind swirled with vivid thoughts. In the duration of their marriage, she had somehow felt weird thinking of his physical features, so she never allowed herself to. But now, watching him was like watching a nineties hot throb walking through the doors of a small-town diner. The black-on-black, his signature style was doing something to her."Hey." He said, sliding into the chair across."You made it." "I did." He nodded, resting an elbow on the table. That action is so simple, yet so effective. Her heart began to thump at how much of her cup had truly overflown. "Should we order?" She cleared her throat and readjusted herself."What do you want to eat?" He asked, picking up the menu. Her thighs clenched tightly together, as she silently prayed he

"Is he looking at you?" Rhonda asked.Elijah didn't respond, instead, he waited to see what would happen next. The gang leader held his gun to the ceiling, causing a surge of apprehension from the panicking customers. "Listen everyone. I'll count to ten. By the tenth count, I want everyone out. Okay?" He smiled again and said without looking. "Except you of course."Elijah knew he was referring to him. He also knew things were bound to get messy soon. With one eye carefully placed on a shuddering Rhonda, and the other on the mad men, he waited.*One!Scrambling feet echoed around the room, as everyone present jumped to their feet. *Two!Scrapping tables, and chairs, as they tussled to flee from the scene. It would be an amusing sight to see if it wasn't for the circumstance. Considering the fact the people who visited restaurants like these the most were the rich. *Three!"Should we leave?" Rhonda grabbed Elijah's hands, wondering why he wasn't making any attempt to leave.

The shock was fleeting at best, as he regained his composure almost immediately. "Rhonda?" He called over his shoulders. She grabbed her purse and hurried towards him. "Let's go." She linked her hands in his, as they walked away. When they were safely outside, he gently pulled her hands away from his and turned to face her. "Are you okay?" She forced a smile but gave up when she realized there was no point. "A bit shaky, but I'll live. Are you okay though? You were the one they came for.""It's nothing.""Elijah," Her hands touched his. His eyes came down to the spot she held. "I know I'm not in a position to question anything in your life anymore. I just don't want you to feel like you're alone.""Everything's fine Rhonda. You should get back home to your mother and sister.""My sister is not home. My mum left for some meeting she's been raving about. It's called the exclusive meeting. Weird right?" She said, letting her hand drop."I would take you home, but I have somethi

"Is there anything to eat in this house?" Snow ran around, as Elijah tried to catch him."No there isn't. Wait," He paused. "Why am I even talking to a dog?" He shook his head, to clear off the disillusion. "No wonder those men said it was a pointless adventure attacking you.""What!" He turned around to see snow staring at him."Yeah, those guys." Snow wagged his tail.Elijah deeply inhaled. This was really happening. He was actually talking to a dog. "What guys?""Food first, then I'll tell you.""No way you're bargaining in my own house."Snow fluffed his hair, and he was a pretty hairy dog. Elijah guessed that was his idea of a shrug. If he wasn't so confused, he may have managed a half smile."Fine. I should have something in the fridge. You better hope the guy who copped this place for me, was intuitive enough to bring some food too.""He did." Snow said, walking behind Elijah."And how do you know about that?" "I saw him."Elijah gave him a quick side glance. "Ar

Elijah got out of the shower and grabbed a towel. Wrapping it around him, he dashed into the room. He went straight for the drawer he had emptied the contents of the duffle bag in. The journal was the first thing he saw when he opened it. Grabbing it, he went back to the bed, and quickly opened it. He began to flip through the pages, frantically searching for anything related to the exclusives. He was starting to think his memories had played a trick on him because he could have sworn he had seen that name before. But he got to the middle page of the journal, and there it was staring back at him. A single entry which read: "They came again, the exclusives. Saying they'd give me whatever backing I needed for Crawford Laboratory to become untouchable in Quantum City. Once again, I turned them down."That was it. The end. There was no other mention of it in the journal. His brain began to work overtime. While his father had been careful with the things he said around him, his mother n

The passage into the meeting room was always dimly lit, and dull. However, upon entering the room itself, it overflowed with light from different sources. The mahogany walls were filled with paintings of different monuments of the city and a big map of the biggest and most important buildings of Quantum City. Just beside it, and at the center of the wall was a big antique clock. The center of the room itself was a big table filled with different kinds of books and documents. Around the room were golden-coated couches filled with the fluffiest pillows. At both ends of the room stood library-like bookshelves that held more books. The contrast between the modern lighting, and ancient interior design added to the mysterious appeal of the hidden room. Built with thick walls to trap every sound, it was the most secure building in the entirety of Quantum City. It was in this same room the elites of the City gathered tonight after three whole years to discuss a pressing issue. While t

"What do you mean if all the Crawfords were eliminated?" Tiana for the first time spoke, panic in her voice. They all turned to her, realizing Kingston was not only the first-timer there. With the way he had behaved earlier, one would think he was a regular member."Tiana Anderson. I almost forgot you were invited." Nathan said, stroking his beard. She ignored him, focusing all her attention on Dr Hill. "Did you kill the Crawfords?" She asked."Didn't your father tell you about the inner workings of the City before he died?" Dr Hill returned."I got to know about this gathering on his deathbed. When I got a text from you about a meeting tonight, I didn't quite know what to expect.""Did he give you a journal?" Colin asked."Yes, he did.""Great. When you get home, you do well to read through it. Frankly, we don't have the time to fill you in from the top." Dr Hill said, his voice marked with irritation."My father told me everything I need to know. No need to fill me in." Kin
