Chapter 9

Adrian went to another store and bought everything he needed. He went home and hurriedly prepared lunch with the help of other maids in the house.

They served the food and then waited for the entire family to come downstairs. A couple of them were not around but Lady Barbara was and so was Raymond and Maria Their terror twins were also at home.

Ada, the first daughter of the family was home too. But her husband wasn't and the others were all off somewhere.

They all sat at the long dining table and Adrian watched as the maids dished out the food. He had never been served food or anything else by anyone in his life. He wondered what it would truly be like to fully be addressed and regarded as the heir to Brooks Castle and Castle.

He felt an almost irrational need to excitedly reveal his secret. Like just spit it out and see the reactions on these people's faces.

Ada would probably faint, although he didn't know who between her and her mother, Lady Barbara who would faint first, and Raymond would probably call thugs to beat him up until he decided to give up everything.

No. Keeping this a secret was really the best idea.

The family dug into their food, the clatter of forks against plates audible in the dining room. Adrian stood where he always did when Lady Barbara requested for him, behind Sir Brooks chair, closer to her own, but Linda always stood behind Lady Barbara.

Raymond spoke from his side of the table in between chewing food. “Mother, don't you think I should sit in my father's chair as of now? At least we all know I'll take over, so it doesn't really matter when I take over some things around the house, right?”

Ada glared daggers at him. “Some things? What other things do you have in mind to steal for yourself?”

“It is not stealing if it belongs to me anyway, Ada.” Raymond asserted with some authority.

Ada scoffed. “Our father couldn't put you in charge of anything even if you begged. We all know how horrible you are at the family business. You can barely hold your own against the board of directors.”

Raymond was growing angry at being challenged. “Like I said, I would just start with Fathers seat at the head of the table.”

Their mother finally spoke up. She swallowed first before speaking. “Well, Raymond, you are not the head of the family, are you? In fact, thank you for reminding me. As of now, since I am pretty much the one in charge, I will sit at the head of the table.

They all gaped in stunned silence as their mother sat up and went to the head of the table. She gave Adrian a pointed look and reluctantly, Adrian drew out the chair for her, as she carried her heavy dress up and then sat down.

Linda bent to Lady Barbara, arranging the layers and layers of the elaborate dress she'd worn just to eat at the family table around her until it was to her liking. Then she straightened up and joined Adrian behind her chair.

Raymonds face was blotchy and red with annoyance. “Nice one, mother, stealing my idea and my birthright for yourself.”

Ada laughed. “You have such small, chicken dreams. So all you wanted and what you call your birthright is sitting at Father's chair for family meal times?”

“Mother, maybe you can let him have that, so that he can stop bitching.”

Lady Barbara hissed in annoyance. “Ada, there are children here at this table.”

Ada rolled her eyes. “Oh please, mom, Raymond and Marias little spoiled brats already know more curse words than you and I do.”

Marias head turned fast as she looked like she wanted to stab Ada with her cutlery. “My children are well behaved and well mannered. Don't be so bitter because you don't have any of your own”

“Oh, kids?” Ada asked Maria. “I'm glad I didn't have any just to do a thorough fuck up job at raising them.”

“Not that you would be any better,” Lady Barbara said under her breath as the bickering broke at the dining table and filled the whole room.

Adrian and Linda exchanged looks but kept quiet as the siblings went at each other. Adrian tried to think who amongst them was desperate enough to try and poison their father to death.

Suddenly there was a blob of food thrown at his face. It landed right in his eyes and his eyes watered as he smelled the salad someone had hurled at his face.

He brought his hand up to his face and slowly wiped the pieces of veggies and chicken from his face, his gaze going round to find out who had thrown food on him.

One of the twins giggled evilly. As always, no one said anything to caution the boy.

Adrian stood there stiffly, trying not to go to the boy and give him a good knock on the head.

The boy now turned to his plate of food and shoved it down to the floor, spilling all the food away.

Linda gasped beside Adrian and Adrian stared at the monstrous little boy as he began to cry.

His mother started patting his face. “Why are you crying, my little prince?”

“I don't like the salad…it tastes like poop.”

Adrian wanted to go to the boy and tell him that he had better behave better or he'd get a few toys taken away, but he knew that was the boy's parents duty, and they wouldn't do it.

“Oh, my poor little baby,” Maria sighed, totally ignoring the bad behavior her son had exhibited.

The girl twin piped up. “I also hate the food and the salad and my juice. Can't I have what mommy's drinking?”

“Sweetheart, mommy's drinking wine. You're too small for that.”

She pouted, refusing to eat any more of her food. Adrian could barely stand watching them.

Maria glanced up at him and barked out, “Are you waiting for me to beg you to come and clean up this mess??!”

Adrian moved from where he was standing, going to bring a broom and dustpan.

He already knew who was on the top of his list when he became the heir and truly assumed his role.
