Chapter 7: The Blow

The three friends stepped out of their room.

Indeed, there were a large number of students waiting for them.

"You know that you can't really force him to go to the Outback Steakhouse," David muttered.

"Shut up!" One of the female students, Bertha, shushed him. "It's not like you can treat all of us to dinner! Mick made it clear that he can only buy dinner for us if you come to Steakhouse. Why are you so stubborn, Brad?"

Kevin moved close to Brad, in fear. "I think you should follow them. They will make life unbearable for us if we decide to stay."

Well, Brad had nothing to lose.

He nodded once. "Alright, I will come with you."

"Better!" Bertha said arrogantly and turned to the rest of the students. "Brad has agreed to follow us. So, we should all meet at the outback steakhouse."

"Yes!" The students jubilated, excited at the meal they were going to have at Steakhouse.

They turned away and left one after the other except for Bertha.

Kevin regarded her for a moment with surprise in his eyes. "Why are you not leaving?"

"So that Brad can run away? No! We will go to the Outback Steakhouse together."

They flagged down a taxi and got inside.

The drive to the Steakhouse was quiet as no one said a word to each other.

When they stopped in front of Outback Steakhouse, Bertha turned to Brad.

"You should pay for our cab if you aren't going to pay for our dinner tonight," she said coldly.

"I will," David muttered and pulled out a stack of notes.

They stepped inside the big restaurant.

Bertha moved to speak with the receptionist and soon beckoned Brad and his friends to follow her.

They entered a big room where Mick and the students were.

The students were whooping in delight when they stepped inside.

Mick cleared his throat and looked at Brad. "Look at who is here."

The students turned towards him at once and burst into laughter.

Linda was beside Mick, smiling sheepishly as if she had nothing else in life to worry about.

Brad felt pained that he had to attend such a gathering. Linda was a woman he wanted to settle down with.

David looked at Brad. "You don't have to respond. We will be out of here as fast as we can," he assured, sensing the pain in Brad's eyes.

After all, they all knew who Linda was to him.

"So, I called everyone here to celebrate my love and for you all to witness this," he announced and raised his glass of wine.

A waiter walked inside with a box. He moved closer to Mick.

Mick took the box and turned to Linda. "I will give you everything you want, everything the losers you once dated couldn't."

Linda took the box and unsealed it. She gasped. It was. David Webb and the latest iPhone 15.

"Wow!" Students exclaimed in jealousy and happiness.

"You got David Webb for me?" Linda was emotional as she held the gifts in her hands.

"Yes," Mick shrugged briefly. "It was the last one at Miller May," he said proudly.

At his words, Brad turned to look at Mick. Ava did tell him that she got the last David Webb at Miller May, how then did Mick get his?

Unless it's an imitation.

Brad scoffed. Mick wasn't as rich as he seemed after all.

“Wow!” Mercury blushed at the sight of David Webb. “I told you, Linda, that you should leave the good-for-nothing guy like Brad. If you hadn't listened to me, you wouldn’t have been able to meet a guy like Mick,” She said to the hearing of others.

The well-wishers who were still admiring the necklace, laughed.

“We all know that Brad is the poorest student in college. He shouldn’t be the one you will choose to stay with.”

“Well,” Linda glanced at Brad, with a wide smile on her face. She felt fulfilled and satisfied. “I was only trying to help him by agreeing to date him.”

“Help?” Bertha laughed. “The only help you can render to Brad is by speaking with Mick to arrange a job for him. Perhaps he could be one of their cleaners or_,” Her voice trailed off, with a smug face.

Bertha intentionally said the word aloud because she wanted to get on the good side with Linda. After all, she was the girlfriend of a very rich guy on their campus. It would pave the way for her in the business world. Mick’s father owns a company.

Mick laughed. “I would have done something like that if Linda had asked. Brad would have gotten the opportunity to earn a few bucks monthly instead of having a treasure he couldn’t spend on. He would just keep wasting your beauty,” he looked at Linda and winked.

Linda blushed even harder. She felt pleased at the decision she made concerning leaving Brad and staying with Mick. Indeed, Mick would give her all the things she wants and deserves.

“Why don’t we make a toast,” Mick said suddenly and raised his glass cup. “To Brad for giving me the chance to meet the love of my life. If the poor aren’t poor, the rich wouldn’t get richer,” he said mockingly.

All eyes turned to look at Brad. They laughed when they saw Brad’s friends chewing steaks.

“See them! Bird of the same feather!” Bertha laughed aloud, pointing to them.

“I thought Brad didn’t want to come here and he was forced but it looked like what he and his friends wanted,” someone mocked.

At this stage, Brad felt he had heard enough. He huffed aloud.

"And what did you just huff about?" One of the students asked.

“Well, I'm not entirely poor and I can prove it!”

Everyone burst into laughter.

“How? Just how can you do that?” Bertha questioned with disbelief.

“Prove it!” one of the students let out.

Brad didn't say a word as he moved closer to Linda, took the necklace from her hand, and dropped it.

Everyone screamed in disbelief as the necklace shattered into a million pieces
