CHAPTER 53

The following day was drenched in an uneasy stillness, the kind that always seemed to settle before a storm. Leon couldn’t shake the feeling that they were standing on the edge of something enormous, something that could either make or break their cause. The knowledge of Marcus’s potential betrayal gnawed at him, distracting him even during the most routine tasks.

As he moved through town, keeping up appearances, he noticed Clara in a heated conversation with a group of civilians. Clara had always been good at rallying the people, inspiring them to action when things seemed dire. Leon admired that about her, but today, even her words seemed to lack their usual fire.

He approached just as Clara was wrapping up her speech, the crowd dispersing with nods of approval. "You’ve got quite the way with words," Leon said, attempting to inject a bit of lightness into his tone.
