Chapter 8 - Too Easy?

Jack approached the back fence and carefully positioned his ears to listen to the activities of the people behind the fence.

He knew it was a workday, so most likely everyone was at work.

But who knew if there was a maid or a child in one of those houses?

So he had to make sure that the house he was going to was really deserted, to avoid trouble later.

"I don't want to steal or cause any trouble! I just need a way to get to the Reynolds' house! So my actions should still be forgivable, right?" he exclaimed after finding a house where he was sure the occupants were not inside.

Then he backed up almost twenty meters, got into position, and prepared to run as fast as he could.

Jack then jumped to the fence and, with his body on it, crawled very quickly until he reached the top of the fence.

From there, he could see the backyard of this large house - a large swimming pool in the middle, a stone path surrounded by green grass and ornamental trees.

After a short observation, Jack was now convinced that the house was indeed empty.

He then landed on the ground very quietly, trying to make as little noise as possible.

Jack crossed the stone path and walked slowly along the edge of the pool.

But just as he took a few steps past the pool, his ears caught the sound of a woman's scream.

"Aaargh! Help me! There's a thief here!"

"Damn! I've been caught!" thought Jack.

He turned his body in the direction of the sound.

A woman in her early thirties with a seductive figure was staring at him anxiously.

Wearing an elegant black dress, she looked like a young executive in a large company.

"Miss, forgive me! My name is Jack, and I mean you no harm," he said, bowing his body.

At that moment, as the woman looked at him, her attitude slowly changed.

"Ah, this young man is very young and handsome! So my father is trying a different approach now? Unable to force me to marry those untrustworthy men, he's now sending a seemingly innocent young man? Huh, I won't be fooled by his tricks," she muttered.

The woman was Rebecca Calder, the daughter of Jeremy Calder, one of Rivertown's wealthiest businessmen.

Jeremy had tried repeatedly to persuade his only daughter to get married.

Not just with words.

The old man had even sent the wealthy young men he considered potential suitors for his daughter to meet the girl.

So far, however, she had not accepted any of her father's chosen suitors.

Frustrated, Rebecca left the Calder mansion to live in a quieter and more secluded area like this one.

Rebecca quickly approached Jack.

"Quick, tell me your purpose for coming to this house! If not, I will call the police to have you arrested," she said with a disturbed and slightly angry expression on her face.

However, judging by her body language, Jack seemed to know that she didn't really mean it.

Still, he couldn't just say that the real reason he broke into the house was just to pass through.

"She won't believe me if I say that, will she?" he thought.

After a quick thought, he made up a reason.

"Miss, I am looking for a girl! She is the most beautiful girl I have ever seen in my life! At first, I thought this was her house, but it turns out that I was wrong! I apologize for disturbing you!"

After saying it with as sincere and honest an expression as possible, Jack bowed again.

He hoped that the woman would believe him and let him go.

But when Jack looked at the woman, he saw something strange.

She was staring at him with a different look than before.

"Wow, this young man is very good at acting! He pretended to break into my house by accident and then made up an excuse for me to let him go!" the woman thought, trying to analyze the young man's plan in front of her.

"After that, he will keep coming to this house with excuses to apologize to me! That way, he can slowly get closer to me and find a thousand reasons to ask me out! What a clever way!" she thought as she continued to scrutinize Jack.

"Miss, can I go now? I really don't want to bother you and I'm very sorry for intruding!" Jack said again.

"Hmm, he seems different from the previous men! He sounds very romantic! Besides being handsome, he also seems smart enough to win a woman's heart! It seems that my father is almost winning by trying a different approach now!" the woman thought.

"All right! Enough of this nonsense! You must be my father's pawn, right? Come on, follow me now!" she said.

Jack was naturally surprised by this statement.

But without waiting for his answer, the woman pulled the young man's hand into her house.

Soon they arrived in a beautifully decorated living room filled with luxurious furniture.

"Wait here and never think of leaving this place!" Rebecca said, pushing Jack's body roughly onto a very comfortable long sofa. Meanwhile, she walked upstairs to the third floor in a rather hurried pace.

Jack didn't know what the beautiful woman had in mind.

What he was thinking right now was to find a reason to leave this house as soon as possible.

A few moments later, while his mind was busy thinking of excuses, a soft and melodious voice reached his ears.

"Jack, come here!"
