Even Lydia Leynes, a beautiful lady from the north of Negros Occidental became my live-in partner, which gave me terrible problems with my job. I was out of the job instantly; I was totally broke when things got better which brought hope to my life.
Edward was the one I enjoyed being with, for it gave me the freedom to reveal something deep down in my heart. He was there for me to listen to whatever I wanted to say, whatever I wanted to do with my life at the moment. He suggested working again in the restaurant. I hesitated at first, but my hopeless situation told me to accept the job.
I felt down and out I missed her...them...her...

Danielle's father invited me to the Sugarlandia Hotel to talk about his daughter's status in life. I went directly to the place, asked for information on the counter, and sat in the lounge. I felt some doubts within me, that I couldn't explain. Is it I am afraid, afraid of what? Fear..? Fear of rejection? Or I was not ready to meet him face to face?
Mr. Gustilo was the governor of the Negros Island; a high-ranking official in the Sugar Industry with lots of influences in the political arena and a wealthy family in the south of the island. As my investigator Mr. Rudy Neri reported; Gustilo's family had private armies in their stead to support them politically and privately. He was the elected governor of the island. A wealthy and powerful one!
I walked slowly along with the lobby, went to the end of the building, and found room 101 on the left side wing. At the front door, I started to ring the doorbell. Two uniformed men welcomed me inside and brought me to a naked room with a small table and two chairs. They seated me in a chair facing the wall and left. In a few minutes, I heard the doorknob move slowly and felt somebody enter the room. I didn't move a bit, still facing the wall. I smelled his perfume. He tapped my left shoulder and sat in front of me. He looked at me squarely, eye to eye, but I maintained my posture trying to be brave, responsible, and a gentleman. He extended his hand to me for a handshake. I accepted his right hand and said, "Good morning Governor, nice to meet you."
Still, he hadn't said a word; he moved slowly, called his men, and faced me again. My stomach squirmed with fear, even my eyes kept on rolling in every direction.
"I'm Gov. Gustilo, father of Danielle Gustilo. I wanted to talk to you about my daughter. You know, there's no secret of Danielle that I didn't know of. Even you, I knew you all along. I love Danielle, she's my only child. As a father, I'm willing to give all that she wanted in life. I think you know me as a political leader of this island. With my social status, I cannot divulge my daughter's relationship with you. I wanted this to be...a secret matter."
I was listening, watching him; his forehead, eyebrows, eyes, nose, lips, and his facial expression. My mind kept on wondering what will be the outcome of marrying her daughter, or, marrying Ayah Isabel?
Suddenly, a uniformed man entered the door and put the black bag on the table, and left. Mr. Gustilo looked at it, me too, my eyes on the bag in front of me. I glanced halfway across the room but settled to face Mr. Gustilo instead. His eyes met with mine, knowing that I fully understood what he wanted me to do.
"Marc, I want you to take this bag, it's full of money, but I want you to marry Danielle. This money is nothing to me but it can help you in any way you want, to start a new life with Danielle. Take this money and marry my daughter..."
I was amazed by his action, the conversation that I didn't imagine beforehand. Shocked by his action...agitated, I edged a little and straightened my sitting position. The dryness of my throat started to bring an uneasy feeling inside and out.
"Mr. Gustilo, your daughter knows about this meeting?" I asked coming from my shrilled throat.
"No, she's nothing to do with this, besides she's on the farm right now. Do you like to visit her?"
"Sir, to tell you frankly, I'm surprised by this event and I couldn't decide right now. Would you please give me some time to think it over....in a week's time, Sir?" I saw him, and his facial expression changed.
"Okay then Marco, we'll meet after a week at the same place, just ask the hotel's information counter for our meeting schedule. Thank you for your time and nice meeting you."
I left the room feeling exhausted. I sat down in the hotel lobby to compose myself. A few minutes later, I went home. With a heavy heart, I went to the kitchen, checked the fridge, opened a bottle of beer, and drank bottoms up. I opened another one, for leveling up with what I was thinking. It bothered me; why did I have to decide this way? Why on earth had I to choose between these two women? And, why it's happening to me? What's important to me...Money, Family Life, Comfortable life...or being me?
I slept the whole afternoon when I woke up darkness crept on the face of the earth. Thinking of something exciting, I took a bath, dressed ruggedly; grabbed a taxi cab to head to Edward's place. Besides the Riviera Café & Restaurant, I purchased a bottle of cough syrup in the pharmacy store, put it in my pocket, and entered the restaurant going straight to the comfort room. I looked around for intruders of what I was doing inside the cubicle. Negative. I opened the cough syrup bottle, drank the contents at once, and threw the empty bottle in the waste bin. I hurriedly walked towards the dining area looking for Edward.
"What's the matter, friend? Are you alright?" Edward asked.
"Quick...quick, hurry!! Give me a slice of lemon..go..go.." Edward provided a slice of lemon and I sucked it like a baby, closing my eyes, and felt comfortable.
"Boss Edward, could you please give me two shots of espresso coffee? Charge to your account, I'll pay you next week? Afterward a cup of Americano coffee, please..."
Edward looked at me angrily. He knew me too well why I ordered this way. "Marco, no problem for the coffee...not again my friend—for that stuff... Why, what's the problem?"
"Isn't it payday today? We'll paint the town red my friend!! I'll wait for you, okay? I have something to tell you tonight, a big one!" I exclaimed.
"Okay, Marco take your seat, be calm, and have your coffee, please wait my friend."
I positioned myself at the corner of the dining section camouflaging for customers. I started to drink my two shots of espresso instantly, then, slowly consumed the Americano coffee. Within a few minutes, I felt contented with the chemical reaction of the cough syrup - one bottle. 120 ml.
I waited for Edward until ten in the evening. We left the restaurant together, hailed a taxicab headed to our favorite disco house. The moment we were inside, the music banged with my energetic and spirited self. I danced along the hallway, while Edward kept on holding my right arm, telling me not to make a scene. We seated near the wall facing the dance floor; a suitable place for us to view the whole dance floor and the disco-goers.
Edward ordered a bottle of Jose Cuervo Tequila, a plate of beefsteak, and a plate of tuna kinilaw."Waiter, please lots of sliced lemons....and salt too."
"Yes sir got your orders, anything else sir?" the waiter asked.
"Oh, by the way, may I know your name? You're new here?" Edward asked.
"My name is Joel Castellano Sir...I'm new here. This is my second job as a waiter after graduating from the University of Negros Occidental. Tried to find a job with my course but failed. So, I'm here working, waiting for my good luck to come."
"I see... me too, worked in a restaurant for a long time now; living alone...I'm separated from my wife with two kids. Nice meeting you Joel. Visit me if you have time at Riviera Café & Restaurant in Lacson Street."
"Okay sir, I'll get your order now. Thank you!"
"Okay, Joel could you please give us bowls of hot soup too?"
"Yes sir...okay."
Edward asked me if I wanted to eat white rice to pacify my stomach. I nodded negatively."So, what do you want, Kinilaw and beefsteak only...or hot noodle soup?"
"No I want to dance, the music's good!" I said.
I stood at once, went to the dance floor, and started dancing to the beat of the music. I felt the earth move under my feet, the lights were moving in different directions, and beads of perspiration fell down the floor. My energetic stunt began to slow down when the music stopped. I held on to the dance floor railing catching my breath. I stood there for a few minutes and finally released a loud shout, "Wheeeewwwww, great!!!!"XXX
I saw Edward approaching where I stood, pulling my arm, and taking me to our table."Hey Marco Fernando, what are you doing? People are looking at you. Behave my friend okay?"I only nodded and started to pour a shot of tequila, with salt and sliced lemon, and three slices of beef steak. Then, I ate the kinilaw and gulped a bowl of soup. I was satisfied and contented that I asked Edward to order more."What? Slowly, Marco, I'm not rich enough to order for more...""Hey...hey Edward my best friend...next week, I'm rich...a rich man!! We will paint the town red!! We'll go shopping, swimming, drinking...until the end of the world!!!...and...and..we'll buy everything...as in anything!!! I shouted."Hey, Marco!! Stop it...stop!! What's your problem, my friend?" Edward angrily asked. "What happened to you? Are you crazy? You don't have money in your pocket... Okay, let's go!"" Joel, bill please...how much?""One thousand and five hundred pesos sir," Joel answered."Here, two thousand pesos
I edged a little to clear the monotonous tone of the atmosphere glanced at Ayah Isabel, started to taste my coffee, put a little sugar, and tasted it. I looked around again, seated comfortably ready for any issue that befalls me. I saw Mr. Gonzales scrutinize me by the way he looked into my eyes. He started the conversation, "Marco, I have been able to raise my children the proper way of conduct with themselves ever since they're young, three of them. We loved them...truly, that we gave the best of everything to them. Now, I must tell this personally, what Bryan said to us. That you and Ayah are living in without the sanctity of marriage...do you truly love my daughter?" His question made me squirm and uncomfortable.Again, I glanced at Ayah Isabel but she was not looking at me. I can see tears falling down her cheeks. "Yes, yes I do Mr. Gonzales," I said quickly without hesitation."Since you loved each other, I decided that your marriage be consummated at once. We will organize this
"Okay, stay there for a while; I'll check the surroundings first." I headed to move slowly at first, inspecting the nearby place if it was safe for us. The scorching sun bit my flesh like a scorpion's sting. I went back to where Ayah's waiting told her to move fast and held her left hand towards the rocky side of the beach. We took off our clothes totally, our naked bodies shone in the light of the sun like gems. We washed our clothes and underwear, tightly squeezed it, and spread it open on the boulder. We remained in the water for a few minutes, waited for our clothes to dry, and dressed up. Ayah and I looked for any residents along the shore or anybody who can help us. But, nothing...no one...it's a remote area. I looked at Ayah Isabel and said sarcastically, "Ayah, you're wearing heels? We're going to walk for a few kilometers away...look at you?""Yes, my feet hurt while running in the fields....," while grimacing her face."Give it to me." She handed her heels, I looked for a st
I bought two tickets going to Bacolod City and asked Ayah to come along to the opened shop, trading some ready-made lady's dresses and shoes."Which one do you like? I think that one with a flowery design, do you like it?""Yes Marc, I love that one. By the way, where did you get this money?""Remember the money your parents gave to us, I put some in my wallet. Okay then, get it and change your dress at the fitting room, over there and I'll select shoes that suit you."We finished buying things for Ayah; bought some food delicacies and went onto the bus. I selected the rear seats for us both. I embraced Ayah to rest on my left arm and she falls asleep. A few minutes later, sleep kept on bugging my nerves that I started to close my eyes. But suddenly, my vision focused on a man standing near the ticket booth. He's the man from the chapel! I closed my eyes again, and spotted him, to be sure. Yes, it's him!I hastily edged down the seat with Ayah to cover us from a man's view. I woke her
It was in the year 1980, on the 4th day of October that we left Bacolod City to go to Manila. The next day, we're nearing the port of Manila, and our hearts are filled with joy for our new dreams, new hopes, and a new beginning. We were all alone to face the future. XXXIt was the last quarter of the year 1980, October that we arrived at the port of Manila, Philippines. As we came down aboard the ship, the feeling of being in Manila gave me hope to survive and fulfill my dreams. But as we walked in the crowd of different people, saw different faces; we were wondering where to go and where to stay. In our hearts, we can survive believing that someday, luck will reside in our lives. And it came suddenly..."Friend, are you the couple...I mean in the ship coming from Bacolod City?" asked a man with his wife and child."Yes, what about?" I asked doubting him."Where's your baggage, are you traveling without...I mean bag, pouch, or anything?""Why are you asking?" I angrily asked."You kn
In my mind, being a father was the greatest gift from God, a love that you can extend your innermost feeling to your son or daughter and your loving wife. It's not a responsibility but an obligation to care, love, and provide for their future. Nevertheless, as a father, you conformed to your maturity, determination, knowledge, and your whole personality to embrace your son or daughter, or children into the right path of living. If you're lacking the sense of discipline to sacrifice for them, then, and only then, you have no right to be called a father.I worked so hard to earn more than what I received from my employer; controlled my vices, learned new things about my trade, and even learned new ways to interact with people. Ayah's pregnancy brought a new life for me, to be a good father, and motivated me to dream some more.We forgot my friend Edward in Bacolod City, even Danielle, my family, and even the wrath of Governor Gustilo. Ayah's family too, she never asked me about them. Ou
That was...On the thirtieth day of December 1985, Monday that I left my beloved country Philippines, bound to Dubai carrying the reverie in my heart. I am an Overseas Filipino Worker, in short, OFW.Manila International Airport, Departure Lounge, Philippines: "Calling all passengers bound for Dubai, you have twenty minutes left to board the plane, Thank you!" The announcement nailed my ears with excitement, hope, and fear. The International Fast Food Chain of Restaurants hired us, as a group of 100 workers, to manage the stores in different places within Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharjah, Ajman, Umm Al Quain, Al Ain, and Ras Al Khaimah. Everyone was assigned in the whole of the United Arab Emirates, and Dubai was for me...my dream city...the City of Dreams...Dubai was young for its infrastructure, but an open city in the Gulf region with a busy commercial outlook compared to some other places in the Middle East. It has a long river that cut through the city center and the nearby places. Gov
I undressed instantly beside Vivian, went to the pool, and enjoyed the water. Every visitor seemed agitated when I approached Vivian again for another shot of tequila and a stick of barbecue. I didn't know why but I enjoyed being with her. She knew how to handle my questions with sense.Ryan Mallari introduced another lady named Susan Magtoto. We chatted near the pool for almost an hour which made Vivian Montoya act differently. I glanced at her, still grilling but now, drinking canned Heineken beer. Susan gave her mobile number and address. Left my place and chatted with another male guest.Around one in the morning, I was quite tipsy, and tried to find Vivian around the place. Glenda told me that she wanted to go home."Glenda, she left just now?" I asked."Yes, she told me to ride a taxi.""Okay, just a minute, I'll call her." I went outside the gate, and saw her on the main road waiting for a taxi cab, "Vivian, it's me Marco!""Yes, Marc, why are you here? I'm waiting for a taxi c
