Josias gives Romualdo a gaze of astonishment. He had no intention of asking just in the construction site, but the opportunity came and he would not refuse. He just didn't expect to get this easy. Was Everaldo in action again?
“Are you sure, sir? Here it looks like work done with care. I don't have a lot of construction experience; at most I helped as Uélton is doing.”
Romualdo analyzes Josias's physical constitution from him. Because he was shirtless, it became easier. “You don't look like a fragile boy to me. You're not muscular, but I see a little strength in your arms and shoulders.”
“I was never an idle person, or a sedentary person, as they say,” Josias explains, with a proud smile.
“Then there is no more talk!” Romualdo sentences, “If you really want to, come tomorrow to start. And what you don't know how to do, we'll teach you. What do you say?”
What to say? Of course, Josias would not refuse! “I accept, Seu Romualdo.”
“Smart boy, you already got my name.” Romualdo smiles widely. The two shake hands to seal the deal. “If you want, you can start tomorrow. And I suggest that you come with another more suitable outfit.”
Josias turns red just to remember. “This will not be possible, Seu Romualdo.”
Romualdo frowns. “Huh, why not? You don't plan on coming in pajamas, do you? I can even pass up the fact that you are shirtless because of the heat, but I would wear these pants in cold weather.”
“It's just that I'm in such a critical situation that this outfit is all I have left.” Josias decides to explain without going into too much detail, “I was forced, so to speak, to leave the house like that.”
Romualdo puts his hand on his chin. “Did you run away for doing some illegal stuff, boy?”
Josias needed to deal with that question. Unfortunately, that's what people think. It is rare to find a young man who is not doing something wrong with each passing year.
Josias only had to deny it. “No, I swear. If I was messing with the wrong thing, I wouldn't be looking for some honest occupation right now.”
Romualdo smiles again and relieves himself. Smart answer. The boy doesn't sleep on the spot.
“Tomorrow, at eight in the morning. Can I know your name?”
“Josias Rocha.” Josias pronounces his name as if he were an authority.
After final greetings, Josias returns to Teodoro's building, almost jumping with happiness. When he passes a house whose radio played “Working My Way Back to You”, by The Spinners, he even dances in the middle of the main street.
Upon entering the reception, Teodoro finds the boy all smiling. “Don't tell me that you found something to do in this place. No, wait! Did you find the girl, find out where she lives?”
Josias burst out laughing. “Not yet, Seu Teodoro, but I found what I was looking for! I managed to get some occupation! Now I'm going to pay for the little room, you can rest easy.”
Teodoro is already fond of Josias enough to go out from behind the counter to embrace the boy. Josias became for him like a nephew. When the two leave, he says, “Don't worry about rent. Next month we’ll see that. When you receive your first payment, focus on buying things for yourself.”
“He told me to go in another outfit.” Josias starts to laugh, “But it seems that these sweatpants will be used. I am not going to use new pants to move cement.”
Teodoro raises an eyebrow. “Cement? Are you going to work at a construction site?”
“Yeah,” Josias quickly adds, “and you can undo that face of worry, Seu Teodoro. I am no weakling, despite my age. I’ve helped you a few times, it’s not that difficult. And Seu Romualdo seems to me to be good people, what I don't know he teaches me.”
“I hope so. I know Romualdo, he is well requested in the locality for construction. Do you know the bathrooms here? He did it. If I had met him before, I would have him build the entire building.”
Josias smiles in agreement. He realized that the bathroom was built more carefully than the rest of the building. It was probably not Romualdo who built those houses on the main street.
After that, Josias went to his room, satisfied and thanking God mentally for another stage of his life resolved. Now it was time to start work, save money and use it wisely. Josias could even make a list of priorities, but he had no notebook or pen.
The next day, he gets up in fright, because with the lack of a clock he has no idea of the time. Josias goes to the balcony, pays no attention to the girl in the other building, and only analyzes the traffic on the streets. People are going to work and children are going to school. Well, it means that it is not yet eight o'clock.Josias wears his underwear, determining that the first thing to do with the first payment will be to buy a pack of underwear and boxer shorts to stop sleeping naked. After he pulls on his sweatpants; he picks up the brush and toothpaste and runs down to the bathroom. When he is walking down the hall, a girl a few years older than him appears and intercepts him. She is a dark blonde and has a bath towel and shampoo in her hands, apparently a novice in the building.“Excuse me, friend.” She asks Josias, “I'm new here; do you know where the bathroom is?”“At the end of the hallway,” Josias said,
After insulted by the guy who insinuated Josias to be a homosexual, he strides out of the bathroom, slamming the door shut, and frowns at the lobby, forgetting to brush his teeth.Teodoro is sweeping the floor excitedly to The Manhattans’ “Shining Star”, pretending that the broom was his dance partner. Josias for a few seconds forgets his anger and laughs at the scene. When Teodoro notices the boy, he disguises and returns to sweep normally.“We just work, work... We get to have some fun, too.” He speaks in an apologetic tone, “How can I help you, Josias?”“Seu Teodoro, can you at least put a sign in the men's room telling the men to close the door? Or rather, can you manage to separate the showers by a box?”Teodoro stops sweeping, he’s looking questioningly at Josias. How many demands!“What do you owe so many requests to, Josias?”Josias gulps; he fears he has overdon
Teodoro quickly realizes that Jeremiah is the man who took a shower with the door open, letting a young lady see him as he came into the world. If she didn't like seeing the black, muscular boy under the shower, it was because she was a family girl. Now he needed to prevent a fight from happening in the lobby.“OK, guys, let's calm down.” Teodoro puts himself in the middle of the two, “Jeremiah, the young man here called Josias was already making me aware of the situation. I happen to agree with his idea, asking you to keep the door closed. When the door is open, it covers the sign that I put on the wall, and other women may inadvertently enter.”“I have lived here for years and this is the first time it has happened.” Jeremias apologizes, not appearing to be sorry, “I can even accept; what I don't agree with is this little guy wanting to teach a moral lesson and speak in decency as if he were the owner of this place. He never
Romualdo approaches the young people with the usual smile. “Good morning, young people! It's good that you are getting to know each other better.” Romualdo notices Josias's dress, “Yeah, there was no way, right? The sweatpants won. But, this is going to be temporary. Shall we start?”Romualdo turns his back and the two boys follow him. The rest of the masons are standing in a corner, waiting for the orders of the day. Romualdo dictates today's schedule, as a real foreman. When everyone goes to perform their tasks, Romualdo takes the famous hoe and gives it to Josias, with a nod. Uélton chuckles again.“See, you did manage to be assigned effectively. I said that I suck with the hoe.”Josias turns to Uélton with the same determined and firm expression. “Don't say such nonsense, Uélton. One day I'll teach you, so you can be proud of knowing how to handle a hoe. Never settle for little. You have t
“Ah yes.” Teodoro smiles proudly. “A great guy. You did very well to invite him to the construction site.”“Yes, he didn't tell me in detail what happened, but it looks like he doesn't have a penny in his pocket and he ran away from home.”Teodoro breaks his smile. Romualdo realizes that there is a sad explanation.“Did something very serious happen to him?” Romualdo asks.“Yes, something very serious.” Teodoro approaches the other side of the counter and speaks quietly, “I heard the news on the radio, and then they made a headline in the newspaper. They murdered his father, and he ran away so as not to die too.”Romualdo gets shocked by the information. “Poor boy! So young and is suffering similar trauma?”“Do you believe he barely had time to mourn his father's death?” Teodoro speaks with great concern, “If he really cried, it was in his r
Josias gets tense, expectant. Here is the moment for him to know if she will like what she sees or if she will reject him because he is working on a construction site.Melissa, however, does not seem to disapprove or belittle him. Instead, she is nodding, looking around. Of course, she couldn't help noticing the fact that Josias was still shirtless and wearing the same sweatpants. “Josias, what are you doing here? Did you get a job as a helper?”“Yes, Melissa, I did it today. I was needing.” Josias speaks, still looking forward to her approval.“Congratulations.” She smiles, “If we were going to date, you would have already earned points with my dad.”Uélton looks at Josias with surprise. Josias smiles satisfied with what he hears. “Thank you very much, Melissa. It is not being easy, but it is what we have.”“You go a long way, Josias, and you look like a smart boy. Well, let
Melissa has a jolt. “Aren't you inviting me to a party like this that we see in the movies? Where will be drinks, drugs, and sex?”The two friends look at Melissa for a few seconds, as if they don't know what to do, or what to lie to her. Finally, the two smile and assure her, “No! None of that, dear friend, what is it! It’s a safe party. There will be residents of Rainbow Garden and Saint Gabriel, it's a good start.”Melissa smiles in excitement. They're not guys from Europe Garden, but it's worth it. The school bell is sounded and the three enter the rest of the students with the class.Meanwhile, Uélton approaches Josias; the two have already finished the job and are being released by Romualdo."Rest for tomorrow, young people," He says this and walks away to join the adult masons.Uélton is washing his hands with water coming out of a hose. "Anyway, the job is over. Are you up for a party today
Uélton says goodbye to his parents and leaves the house with Josias, somewhat embarrassed to know that his friend is leaving for a public place without underwear. But, Josias is not at all embarrassed. He would even wear the same brief, but Uélton said it would not be appropriate... if Uélton kept his mouth shut...Uélton and Josias go to a part of the Happiness Slum where Josias has not yet met. They passed in the direction pointed by Melissa where her house is. So, the chances of meeting her at the party are big, which encourages Josias. They arrive at a two-story house and a terrace. From a distance, you can already see the crowd on the terrace and the sound of loud music = “Off the Wall”, by Michael Jackson. Uélton goes in and greets everyone his age, the boy looks like the son of a politician, he is so well known. And for each friend greeted, Josias is introduced. What Uélton did not realize was that, wi
