Chapter 06 : I want a divorce!

Joe tried to recall his meeting with Aaron yesterday, and he tried to dig into his memory and analyze the most appropriate reason for his wife's anger.

"Asshole! That guy said something degrading about you, Jess. He told me that he would sleep with you. Is that what scared you? Is that what makes you hate that man so much?" Joe pulled Jess' hand, making his wife wake up from her lying position.

"Answer me, Jess. Has he ever abused you? From what he said yesterday, he must have done some disrespectful things to you, right?!" Joe continued to force Jesslyn to explain everything. His mind was at a loss, and he was confused about where his wife knew a depraved man like Aaron.

From when they went to college until they married, Joe didn't know Aaron. He never even met the man once. So, he didn't know when his wife got to see the man, which led to the fear and hatred felt by his wife.

"Don't keep quiet, Jess!" Joe, who had been curious, continued to force his wife to answer. If his wife was always silent and didn't explain anything, then Joe would be even more confused and didn't know what to do afterward.

Joe must calculate his steps. He didn't want to make the wrong decision, to make him ruined, including accepting help from Aaron. If Jesslyn hadn't reminded him earlier, he would think of Aaron as a good person.

"Jess!" A yell finally came out of Joe's lips.

"Yes! He abused me! He hurt my pride! Are you satisfied?!" Jesslyn's voice trembled as she answered the question. Her breathing was intermittent, as it was blocked by the sobs she had been holding in. "Are you satisfied, Joe? You're satisfied after hearing everything, huh?!"

"He, that man, Aaron, almost abused me when we were in college. And I was very traumatized after that. I tried to heal myself for several years until I decided to marry you. Then, after I marry you, do you want to bring me back to feel that trauma?"

This time, Jesslyn did not hold back her sobs anymore. She let the tears she had held back slide down her cheeks.

Joe, who saw such a pathetic scene, immediately hugged his wife. "I'm sorry, Jess. I'm sorry. I promise to make you happy. Now, pull yourself together, okay?"

Jesslyn didn't nod or shake her head. She remained silent, her mind wandering again. "Make me happy? Are you sure you can make me happy, Joe?" She asked.

"I'm sure, Jess. You have to trust me. I'm sure I can make you happy." Joe felt very guilty. He regretted asking his wife about Aaron. Supposedly, after remembering the words spoken by Aaron, he could judge that the man was a jerk who must have hurt his wife in such a way in the past.

Instead of being moved, Jesslyn preferred to jerk her husband's hand away and push the man's body away from her.

"What's wrong, Jess?" Joe asked in a surprised tone. He didn't understand why his wife was pushing his body away.

"I stand by my decision, Joe. We should get a divorce. I don't want to stay in this marriage anymore."

"What do you mean, Jess? I don't want a divorce from you. I'm sure I can make you happy. Trust me, Jess. I won't make you suffer anymore. I'll work hard to make you live a happy life." Joe held both of Jesslyn's hands tightly. He was trying to maintain his household.

"No, no, no. We can't always be together. This relationship is going to break soon, Joe. Everything has been ruined since you agreed to the challenge!"

Joe ruffled his hair in a huff. He was at a loss, not knowing what else to do to persuade his wife. "Please, Jess. Do you remember what I once said to you? I promised Jess I would always make you happy and never let others hurt you. All I need is your trust, darling."

Jesslyn shook her head. "No, I don't. I still want a divorce, Joe. You don't know Aaron, and you don't know what he's really like. He won't let go of his prey so easily!"

"Then, if he doesn't let you go, are you going to allow him to get close to you, huh?!" Joe, who initially wanted to persuade his wife, finally felt angry because his wife was too stubborn to defend her opinion.

"No, I won't. But I-"

"But what? If you hate it, you should trust me, Jess. I'm your husband, and I would do anything for you. There's no way I'd turn you in, even hand you over to Aaron."

Jess remained adamant. "Now tell me, Joe, what can we do to meet Oliver's challenge? Do you realize if you fail, it's not just you who will lose your job but me too? Although my position is higher than Oliver's, Aaron has already stepped in. I'm sure that man must try to get me to follow his orders!"

"I already called one of the numbers you gave me yesterday, Jess. I've made an appointment with the CEO of Seattle Group to finalize the entire purchase of 100 properties before 9 a.m. tomorrow. So, you don't have to worry, okay?"

"Heh." Jess laughed dismissively at her husband. Too many problems had happened today, enough to make her mentally hit and end up with a sense of despair that didn't want to leave her. "Are you sure that the CEO of Seattle Group is willing to buy 100 properties just like that? Without asking you for anything in return for his favor?" She stared in disbelief at her husband.

"I'm sure, Jess. Weren't you the one who suggested I call that number? I'm sure that stiff won't cheat and embarrass me." Joe smiled again as he saw his wife calming down and not discussing Aaron anymore.

"Are you sure that the person you met is the CEO of Seattle Group? As far as I know, it's challenging to meet the CEO of that company, let alone if he's willing to buy that much property from you. I'm still determining. You must have been fooled, Joe!"

"Come on, Jess. Stop underestimating me. I'm your husband, and I'm sure Mr. Lucas can't possibly deceive me. He's already promised to buy the property I'm selling. Let's wait for tomorrow. I'll show you I can win the challenge and make you proud." Joe reassured Jess again. He was confident that his efforts would be successful tomorrow morning and that he could get the promotion Oliver had promised him.

"I'm not sure. I've been working in a real estate company for years, and I know how hard it is to sell properties to people. Let alone 100 properties, and selling ten properties in one month is impossible. So, I'm sure that you've been scammed. It's possible that the person you met is not the CEO of Seattle Group."

Jess didn't mean to discourage her husband, but she was skeptical of his words. How could she not? She knew that the CEO of Seattle Group was tough to meet.

Especially with Aaron's influence on people in business who wanted to buy property from the company she worked for. She was sure the man was trying his best to close all opportunities for Joe to calm the challenge except by asking for his help.

"No, Jess. I'm sure that Mr. Lucas will keep his word!"

"Whatever!" Jess finally gave up. She left her room because she was tired of fighting with her husband.

"Joe, if you can't meet the challenge from Oliver tomorrow, then I no longer want to keep our marriage," Jess said flatly. "Don't think I'm a gold digger or anything like that. I'm just thinking realistically because after you lose and get fired, I'm sure Oliver will do various things to demote me. After all, he hates me so much. And Aaron, that guy will seize the opportunity to get to me."

Joe looked at his wife with an incredulous look in his eyes. "Jess, do you have no trust in me at all? Is this the extent of your love? Do you love me? Why are you so easy to ask for a divorce from me?"

"I love you, Joe! But I can't just rely on your love either. If I get fired because of Oliver and Aaron's charade, where else can I get a job quickly? If I don't work, who will pay for the monthly expenses of this house and all the needs of my family members?!"

"Are you the one who wants to bear and pay for everything? No way, right?" Jesslyn snorted in annoyance. The feelings of emotion and sadness that initially dominated her heart now turned into problems when she remembered Joe, who had only been working for the past three months but still couldn't help her pay for the household expenses.

"Jess, don't tell me that you're going to."

"Whatever it is, I'll do everything to keep my job."

"Including sleeping with Aaron?"

Jesslyn gulped down her saliva with difficulty. "Yes. I'll do everything for the sake of my family," she said as her body exited and disappeared behind the door.
