The old goblin

“You’re exaggerating him.” The old goblin looked at the village chief, smiling like an idiot, and shook his head from his silliness. “Do you know why I’m confident?”

The village chief nodded his head, and the sparkling eyes didn’t escape the old goblin’s vision. He didn’t mind it because he knew the village chief was obsessed with his magic. Or rather, the village chief was hungry for such power.

“Watch me, then.”

The old goblin sneered in confidence, before opening his mouth as he was muttering gibberish incomprehensible words. The village chief knew what he was doing even though he understood nothing about what the old goblin was saying.

The old goblin was chanting to summon the power of magic!

The village chief couldn’t help but imagine himself doing the exact same thing and then summoning a power out of magic. He even imitated the old goblin once when the old goblin summoned a fireball that incinerated the target. It was also fast, even though he knew he could react, but with tens of them targeting him continuously, the village chief knew he couldn’t defend it.

Although, compared to the old goblin casting the fireball what he was casting now was slower. The village chief never doubted this old goblin's words. Clearly, the old goblin was summoning magic that was stronger than his fireball.

A second passed, and suddenly the staff in the hand of the old goblin lit up with light red. Slowly, the more the old goblin continued chanting gibberish words, the village chief’s eyes sparkled with interest and expectations.

As expected, he could now spot the changes in the old goblin surroundings. When another second passed, a light red shield slowly manifested before the old goblin. It wasn’t enormous which would defend the whole body of the goblin as it only covered his head and his chest. However, if the village chief was in the old goblin’s position though, it might only cover up his chest.

The village chief could see a moving light red cloud coming from the staff as it connected in the manifesting light red shield which the color was becoming darker as more time passed. When the casting was complete, a conspicuous solid dense shield was floating an inch away from the old goblin.

“See?” The old goblin sneered coldly. “With this shield of mine, the petty mosquito monster you are worrying about will become useless in front of it. After all, before he could penetrate my body, he would be already incinerated into ashes!”

The village chief repeatedly nodded while looking at the shield in astonishment. After all, what he desired was in front of him, conjuring a magical power that would display the power of being the strongest. Although he had power in the village due to his respected position, he didn’t have the attainment in combat. Therefore, he had two guards who were the only strongest people in the village.

After all, if he was strong, he might not need them, and he also mustn’t have to work hard to gain their trust.

“Do you want to test it?” The old goblin suddenly thought of an interesting idea. “Pick one of the most durable weapons and hit it. Hurry! I can’t maintain it for another five seconds!”

The village chief wasn’t aware of the reason he couldn’t continue to float it for a minute. Just like the fireball, he could only conjure ten of them at most, before the old goblin would become tired and pale like he was about to die. However, despite his curiosity, he didn’t let it become a bad impression of the old goblin towards him.

Therefore, he hastily picked one of the durable weapons, even though it was the most valuable. He doesn’t have a choice. Listening to every of his command was also to gain his impression, which he had been doing for some time. After all, his goal was to become his apprentice.

Although he could have stolen the tome the old goblin discovered when they ended up in this place and lived in harmony together with his kin, the knowledge of the old goblin was valuable, so he had no choice. After all, greed makes the goblin does everything to satisfy it.

A second passed, and the village chief had already decided what weapon to use as a test. It was a double-handed sword, which the village chief struggled to lift up. It couldn’t be helped since the double-handed sword was heavy. Even with the help of his guard, one of them might struggle to swing it.

“This double-handed sword was created from recently discovered materials. It needed the help of five blacksmiths to smite it into a shape, and needed to be drowned in the lava three times! Urgh!”

The village chief wanted to give information regarding the double-handed sword as he struggled to move it. The double-handed sword left a deep trace on the ground while the village chief continued to move. From time to time, the village chief forced every muscle and fiber on his body to strengthen it.

Two seconds passed, and the old goblin was becoming impatient. Looking at the struggling village chief, he knew he needs to adjust. If he let the village chief reach before him, the village chief might need to spend another time attacking with the huge double-handed sword.

He couldn’t let it happen, so he carefully walked while being conscious not to let the fire shield disintegrate because of his lack of concentration.

“Hurry! Smack it here! No need to waste time!”

The old goblin encouraged the village chief, who immediately hold his breath and suddenly forced the double-handed sword to move. Although the village chief wasn’t a combatant, he practiced once, so he was surprised his accuracy was on the spot. The double-handed sword made an arc downward to upward and its point headed towards the center of the fire shield!

The village chief’s face was reddened as a result of his puff cheeks, as his eyes never left the incoming collision between the double-handed sword and the fire shield. It didn’t long before they collided.

Clang!

A clanging sound reverberated inside the hut, and the two guards heard it from the outside. They were stunned before they were alarmed as they thought the village chief might have been attacked. They immediately moved to enter and were shocked by what they witnessed.

The village chief was huffing from the lack of fair, but he was looking at the shield in amazement with sparkling eyes. The old goblin was looking tired as well, but his thrilling eyes seemed to forget the tiredness of his body.

The guards watched them, as they immediately moved to encircle the old goblin. After all, they appeared to misunderstand the situation, and the village chief had to stop them before everything took turn for the worse. He was momentarily shocked by their actions, and so was the old goblin. The village chief immediately looked at him and was relaxed when he saw he wasn’t angry.

After all, in the eyes of the old goblin, they were nothing but a bunch of idiots who would be convinced with a bunch of nonsense.

He disregarded their existence similar to the guards who acted in the small goblin earlier. He sneered at the village chief and opened his mouth, exposing his scattered yellow teeth.

“See? With this fire shield, I doubt that mosquito monster or whatever he was could break it!”
