Brian's eyes widened at his mother's statement. His father? Wasn't he supposed to be dead?
"This man...my father?" stuttered Brian in shock, his eyes darting from his mother to the man.
But his mother told him his father died before he was even born. Had she been lying all this while?
"Brian," The man called and slowly drew closer to Brian.
Brian transfixed on his spot, took in the man's features as he approached. Brian, resembling his mother, had nothing in common with the man except the eye color. Their eyes were the same shade of brown. Could this be his father?
The man exhaled deeply in happiness, running his hand on Brian's body. "You've grown so much."
Brian looked into his eyes. "Are you really my father?"
The man's hands stopped on Brian's shoulders. He answered with a hug.
Brian stood still in shock as the man's arm tightened around him. His father was alive in all of his twenty-two years of life?
His face twitched with disgust immediately and he pushed him away.
The man staggered back a little with a look of surprise. "Brian..."
He started to say but Brian cut him off.
"So, here is the man who left my mother pregnant."
Edward's face dropped. Sadness and guilt filled his eyes.
"I'm sorry. I never meant to leave her." Edward tried to place his hand on his shoulder again but Brian's glare made him withdraw his hand.
"You left my mother to suffer. Because of you, she suffered alone with the pregnancy you were responsible for." Brian snapped forcefully.
"There is no day I live without regretting my actions. But I'm here now."
Brian shook his head. "If you think we'll forgive you just like that, you are very wrong. And don't waste your time apologizing because neither I nor my mother would listen. So just take us home."
"Brian. You have every right to be angry with me. What I did was very wrong but please don't hate me. I'm not a bad person."
Brian snorted. "What else would you call a man who left his girlfriend pregnant and remembers them two decades later? And come to think of it, we thought you were dead, but here you are looking even better than us. What else should I call you if not a bad person?"
"I have reasons for my actions. Just hear me out."
"No. What are we doing here? You know what? I don't care. Let's go mum."
Edward looked at Rosanna with pleading eyes. "Rosanna, please. Can you try to convince him?"
Brian snarled. "Don't try to make my mother convince me. It won't work."
But even as he said it, he knew it was a lie. His greatest weakness was his mother.
"I'm out of here. Meet me at home, mum."
Before Brian could take a step, Rosanna held his arm. "Brian, wait."
Brian pursed his lips. Too late.
Rosanna continued. "Hear him out. He's your father."
She looked at him with those eyes Brian couldn't resist obeying.
He sighed exasperatedly, then faced Edward. "What do you want from us? And who are those men?" He glanced at the door where Melanie and Charlene stood, watching in silence.
Edward smiled. "They are mine."
Brian frowned. "Your men? Oh please, what are you going to tell me next? That you own this house?"
"Nice guess," Edward said.
Brian's jaw dropped in puzzlement.
Edward quickly added. "Actually, it isn't mine presently. I gave it to a friend. But I have other mansions, bigger than this one."
Brian shook his head, surprised by the way he spoke this like it was normal. "You have other mansions...what have you been doing all this while?"
"Building up and improving the family's business and wealth."
This statement baffled Brian. He asked. "What do you mean?"
"You probably don't know this but our family owns lots of properties like hotels, estates, companies, all of which are under L.A.K.E Conglomerate."
Upon hearing the name of the company, Brian's confusion only increased.
"L.A.K.E Conglomerate? As in..."
"The top holding company in the city and country? Yeah." Edward completed.
Brian let out a sharp gasp. "Wait, you own L.A.K.E Conglomerate?"
Edward nodded. Brian became dumbstruck.
Being in the business management department, Brian knew about most of the companies in the city. And there isn't anyone in the city who hasn't heard of the company.
L.A.K.E Conglomerate was the top-earning and biggest corporation in the country, known for its high-quality products. They had numerous subsidiary companies spanning across various industries in the country and even out of the country.
The company was a prestigious and powerful one which is why Brian was very surprised.
Brian's mouth hung open as he tried to speak but couldn't form words. His father? The owner of the top one company in the country?
No wonder he was this wealthy. The company's net worth should be up to billions, or even trillions.
The company should be receiving billions annually and millions monthly if you add the dividends received from all the subsidiary companies under it.
His father was this wealthy? That means he and his mother won't be poor anymore. Brian almost smiled in joy.
But he closed his mouth and glared at Edward, his expression becoming that of anger when he remembered something.
"Nice try, but I won't fall for that."
"What are you talking about?" asked Edward, confused.
"You, Edward Ashton, claim you own L.A.K.E Conglomerate. But the last time I checked, the owner of the company was a man called Richard Lennox. I've seen his pictures and you look absolutely nothing like him."
"How do you know that?"
Brian shrugged. "I'm in the Business Management department. I do research."
Edward chuckled. "Well, your research is accurate. But what if I told you Richard Lennox is my best friend?"
"Wow, that's...amazing, I guess. But being the best friend of the owner doesn't make you the owner."
"Richard is only the CEO, not the owner. And I made him the CEO."
"What are you talking about? How is that possible?"
"Because I'm the real owner."
"Yeah right." Brian scoffed, refusing to believe. His father was lying. Everyone knows that Richard Lennox, the last descendant of the Lennox family, is the wealthy CEO and owner of the company. He has never heard of any Edward Ashton in his research so Edward has to be lying.
"You don't believe me, do you?" asked Edward but he already got his answer through Brian's facial expression.
Edward sighed. He would have gotten his documents which stated his ownership but that would just be a waste of time. So he decided to try another tactic to convince Brian.
"You may think I'm lying but I'm telling the truth. The Lennox never owned L.A.K.E Conglomerate in the first place. Have you heard of the Addams family?"
"What does a fictional family have to do with our discussion?" huffed Brian.
Edward blinked. "Pardon?"
"You mentioned the Addams Family. Well, I'm asking what a fictional family had to do with our discussion. You know, the Addams Family. Gomez, Morticia, Wednesday..."
"Oh," Edward realized what he meant and chuckled in amusement. "No, no. That's not what I meant. Since you study Business Management, I'm sure you'll know that the former owner of the company was the Addams family."
Brian nodded, feeling embarrassed by his assumption. "Yes, but the whole family died in an unknown accident and on the brink of death, the last survivor transferred every right of ownership of their properties to the Lennox family."
"Wow. You've really been doing research online." Edward remarked, sounding impressed with his son. "You are right but that story was told to satisfy the curiosity of the public. It's not entirely true."
"What?"
"Not all members of the Addams family died that day. One survived."
"And how do you know that?"
Edward smiled. "Because that survivor is me."
Brian's mouth hung open at the revelation. The Addams were the highest-ranking and wealthiest of all other families in the city, known for their company, L.A.K.E Conglomerate. They had been around in the country for a long time, breeding generations. They were so popular that you couldn't be a citizen of the country without knowing them. But the whole family, except an old member, was assassinated and their corpse was posted on the internet. Before he died, the survivor transferred the rights of ownership to the Lennox family, a family that had a history of friendship with the Addams. A few days after the transfer of ownership, the old man died. Being the last member of the Adams family, his death marked the end of the Addams family. Brian read this exact story on the internet during research for an assignment. The Adams family were all dead so what was Edward saying? How could he be an Addams? Brian stifled a laugh. "Nice joke Dad."He glanced at Edward's face which didn't expr
The door yanked open and a man in a red suit walked in, holding a stack of files. "Hey Eddie, I just received the business proposal from Mr. Kowalski. Funny man. After his defiance, he still decided to bring it. What did I tell you?" He started speaking immediately, oblivious to the presence of the other people as his head was bent towards a pack of files he was holding. "Maybe we should play a little prank on him just to get him on his edge, you know. What do you think?" The man looked up and widened his eyes, finally noticing the other people in the study. "Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't know you had guests. I..." He stopped apologizing when he caught sight of Rosanna. "Color me shocked. Rosanna, is that you?" Brian narrowed his eyes. How does this man know his mother? A little smile tugged Rosanna's lip. "Hey, Richard." Brian took another look at the man and narrowed his eyes more, trying to remember where he saw him. The quiff on his blond hair looked very familiar. Brian let ou
"Yeah, your father told me to transfer it to you," Richard explained as he kept his phone back in his pocket. Brian stared at his phone with his mouth hung open. "Are you okay? Is the amount too small? I told Edward to send one billion dollars." "Uh, did you just say the amount is too small?" Brian looked at Richard unbelievably. He has never owned an amount exceeding a thousand dollars, now he had millions and he was saying it was too small? It was the greatest amount to Brian. Richard shrugged. "What do I know? I have more than that." "This is...this is so great. Thank you so much." "Anytime. If you need more don't hesitate to let me know. Anyway, how do I look? How's my hair?" He tugged his suit and ran his hand on his blond hair. It seemed he added more gel and brushed up his quiff because it was more evident than last night. He had also shaved. Last night, Brian saw some strands of beards on his cheek and chin, but his face was now as smooth as the marble tiles on the groun
Patricia and Margaret stared at Brian in surprise before bursting into laughter. "Oh, Brian Ashton. You make me laugh." Patricia said, doubling over in laughter. "He doesn't want only the gowns but the rest of our clothes? Nice joke." Margaret added. Brian only crossed his arms and waited in silence for their laughter to die down. He asked flatly. "Are you two done?" "Oh wait, you are serious?" Patricia said, still laughing. She drew in a deep breath to calm herself. "Maybe you are confused. This isn't like all your rags you call clothes. These are rich classy clothes worth a hundred dollars. They can probably foot your bills." Brian shrugged. "I know and I want them." "Too bad. We already bought them." "No, you haven't. Where's your receipt?" Patricia pursed her lips. She hasn't paid for them yet. "Well, Gabe will be here to pay for them soon." Brian sighed and faced the sales lady. "She doesn't own those clothes yet, right? So I'd like to buy them." "Well..." The sales
"Oh, I see. You and your mother are messing with me and ignoring my calls, right? You don't want to pay me. Guess what? I just threw out all of your useless stuff. That should bring you here." Brian read this text message as he was being driven to a salon Charlene recommended. Below this message was a picture of their belongings piled up outside the apartment. He chuckled. Even though it was a text message, he could imagine his landlord's angry expression and voice as he read it. The landlord hated him and his mother so much because they paid their rent late. What a relief they weren't living there anymore. He stared at the picture of all their belongings. His room in the mansion had everything he needed, even better. So there seemed to be no need to get his belongings. But his school books were among them. He needed the notes he had written in them for school. And he didn't feel comfortable leaving their belongings lying there for anyone to take. "Let's go to my former flat firs
It was a Monday afternoon at Star City University two days after the shopping incident. It was a normal day except for the fact that the school's poorest student had evolved. Patricia's video went viral but it earned Brian popularity instead of her. Brian had become the hot topic of discussion in the school. Who would have thought Brian had so much money? Everyone knew him as a poor student. Brian, who was aware of the attention he was getting, entered the cafeteria with Melanie and Charlene behind him. All heads in the cafeteria snapped towards him immediately. "OMG! The rumors are true." "Isn't that the latest shirt and shoe brand he is wearing?" "How is this possible?" "Charlene and Melanie are really lucky." Murmurs and hushed gossips filled the air Brian wore one of the shirts, jeans, and sneakers he bought in the mall to school. He even had a gold wristwatch and chains on his neck, and a new pair of glasses. He could have been mistaken for Raymond if not for his glasse
*SLAP* Brian's face turned to the side from the impact, shock written on his face. He wasn't expecting the slap to come at all. Slowly, he turned and looked at Patricia who was fuming in anger. "How dare you carry your wretched self into this prestigious place? Have you no shame? Do you see your type here?" Patricia spat. Brian felt rage rush through his blood. He fought the temptation to hit her back because if he did, he would do more than slap her. He opened to speak but was interrupted by another person. "What's going on here?" Alexia, who had just come out from another door and saw the commotion, asked. She also worked there. Alexia's expression of surprise changed to disgust when she saw Brian. "What's this good-for-nothing fool doing here?" Brian opened his mouth again but Patricia spoke immediately. "After humiliating me online, you still have the guts to come here, huh? Do you think you are some big shots because you paid some money? I'm very sure Melanie and Charlen
"Say hello..." he raised his hands in the air, "...to your new black card." He slammed his hand on the table and withdrew, revealing a black card. Brian gasped in shock and took the card. He turned it, examining every spot. His name was embedded in it. "Your father created an account with your name recently and sent me the card." He paused allowing Brian to process the first piece of information before adding. "There's ten billion dollars in it." Brian's eyes widened. "Ten what now?" "Ten billion dollars," Richard repeated. "Yeah. As long as you are in this house, you'll never lack anything." "Oh, my goodness. I think I'll go shopping again." "Of course go have fun. Also, you'll start training tomorrow." Brian's face twitched. "Training?" Richard nodded. "Being the heir of the Addams family, you need to learn how to protect yourself. Sure, Melanie and Charlene are your bodyguards but they can't protect you all the time. There are times when you may need to protect yourself. S
