Brian stared at Melanie from head to toe in shock.
"OK, I don't get it. You own those men?" Brian asked. Melanie didn't strike him as someone with that power.
"No time for questions. We have to get out of here." Melanie answered.
She hooked her arm into Brian's and lifted him. Brian winced as his body hurt. But the pain didn't suppress his surprise.
"How did you know I was here?" he asked.
"I said no time for questions." Melanie snapped.
When they neared the exit of the alley, Brian saw a black Mercedes Benz waiting. And, at last, he saw the men standing by the car. They were dressed in casual clothes and had nose masks on their faces.
Brian's jaw dropped. He became scared that it took all of his willpower to walk properly. These men were built up with so many muscles that Brian could see their chest and broad shoulder outline on their shirts. Their biceps popped out in their long sleeve.
"Who are those?" Brian asked. He felt like a child in the presence of the men.
"Chill. They are here to help us," answered Melanie.
One of them opened the car door for them. Brian hesitated but moved in when Melanie nudged him. She entered after him, and the door was slammed shut.
Two of the men sat in the front seats. The car started and moved. In the rearview mirror, Brian saw a car trailing them from behind.
"Um...Melanie," Brian whispered to Melanie. "What's going on?"
He lowered his voice. "Who are these men? And where are we going to?"
"Just relax. You'll see soon." Melanie replied and kept her eyes on the window.
Brian relaxed, thinking they were taking him to his rental apartment. But they zoomed past the apartment building when they reached it.
"Uhm, home is there," Brian pointed out. Maybe they didn't see the building.
"No, that isn't where we are going," replied Melanie.
"But my mother. She'll be worried."
"Charlene took her."
Brian furrowed his brows. "Charlene? Is she part of..." He glanced at the men, "...you guys?"
Melanie nodded. "She is already at our destination as we speak."
Brian rested his back, confused with everything that was happening – almost being abducted, saved by these strange men, and now, being taken to a place he had no idea about. Today has been full of surprises.
The journey was a silent one as no one was willing to speak. Brian appreciated the silence. He didn't feel comfortable talking in the presence of these men.
After what seemed like an hour or two, the car stopped by a huge gate. Brian opened his mouth and marveled at the sight of the gate. It was made out of silver that gleamed under the floodlights attached to a pole by the side.
The gate opened automatically and the car drove into the most beautiful environment and mansion Brian had ever seen. The environment consisted of a lawn separated on two sides by a driveway that led to a fountain in the middle.
The driveway went around the fountain and separated into branches. The lawns had flowers of different beautiful varieties and species and the fountain spurted water that shone under the moonlight. Brian was so dumbstruck that drool slid down his lips before closing them.
The car drove around the fountain and stopped at the front of the huge cream-colored mansion. The car trailing from behind stopped behind them.
One of the men came out and opened the door for Brian.
Brian stepped out and gazed around. Was he dreaming?
Melanie cleared her throat to get his attention after she came out. "Follow me."
Brian followed Melanie. The two men trailed behind like bodyguards. Or were they bodyguards? Brian glanced back at them and faced front quickly. They climbed the porch.
The front door of the mansion was double and seemed to be made out of gold. It had a Phoenix design on it.
Two men dressed in black suits and dark shades stood on either side. On Melanie's signal, they opened the door for them, revealing the luxurious living room behind it.
Brian didn't have time to gaze upon the living room for long as he climbed up the stairs in the room. All he knew was that it was furnished grandiosely and screamed elegance.
Brian tried not to look down as they climbed up the stairs with silver railing. Melanie led him to the top floor of the mansion and emerged out to a hallway.
Brian gazed at the artifacts and artworks hung on the wall in the hallway, lit by white bulbs in enclosed fixtures. By his left structured a balcony.
The artworks and artifacts looked expensive, like the ones auctioned in those classy events. Whoever owns this mansion must be stinking rich.
He was led to the last door at the end of the hallway. There was a turn to the left at the end of the wall.
"Here we are," Melanie announced when they arrived at the door. She opened it and stepped aside.
"After you," she said, gesturing inside and bowing down at the same.
Brian blinked in surprise at what Melanie had just done. The Melanie he knew would never do that.
He shook his head and walked in.
The room behind the door was a study. A table and swivel chair were stationed behind a bookshelf with different books on the wall opposite the door. There were brown cushioned seats and couches, leaning against the wall.
Only two people were there. One was Charlene, while the other was a woman with black long wavy hair and dark spots on her face.
The woman gasped. "Brian."
"Mum," He exclaimed and rushed to her. His mother got up from the seat and hugged her son tightly.
"Thank goodness. Are you hurt?" She ran her hands on his body after she broke the hug. "Look at your bruises. What did those monsters do to you?"
"Mum, relax. I'm fine." Brian assured her.
"Do they still hurt?" asked his mother, referring to the bruises.
Brian shrugged. "Not anymore."
Brian heard the door close and he turned to Melanie who just entered.
"I owe you one, Mel. Thanks for helping me with those guys." he thanked her.
"That's my job," Melanie replied curtly.
Brian blinked. "Job? What do you mean? What are we even doing here? Shouldn't we go to the police or something?"
"There will be no need for that."
Everyone's head snapped towards the door where the voice had come from. A man had just walked in, dressed in a well-tailored gray suit. He looked like he was in his forties with brown hair, as long as his face. His jaw was covered by a well-trimmed black beard and his face skin was smooth without blemish.
"Hello." He greeted, his face beaming with a smile.
Brian knitted his brows. The man looked elated to see them. But he had never seen this man in his entire life.
Brian's mother, on the other hand, had shock completely written on her face upon seeing the man.
She blinked speedily as if dust had clouded her eyes. "Edward?"
"Rosanna." The man's smile widened.
Rosanna gasped and rushed to him. She flung her arm around him and enveloped him in a tight hug. Brian's mouth hung open.
Rosanna left her arms wrapped around him for a while before slowly leaving him. She looked at his face, her eyes filled with surprise. "Edward, you are still alive?"
"Mum, you know this man?" Brian asked.
Rosanna turned and looked at him. "Brian, this is your father."
Brian's eyes widened at his mother's statement. His father? Wasn't he supposed to be dead? "This man...my father?" stuttered Brian in shock, his eyes darting from his mother to the man. But his mother told him his father died before he was even born. Had she been lying all this while? "Brian," The man called and slowly drew closer to Brian. Brian transfixed on his spot, took in the man's features as he approached. Brian, resembling his mother, had nothing in common with the man except the eye color. Their eyes were the same shade of brown. Could this be his father? The man exhaled deeply in happiness, running his hand on Brian's body. "You've grown so much." Brian looked into his eyes. "Are you really my father?" The man's hands stopped on Brian's shoulders. He answered with a hug. Brian stood still in shock as the man's arm tightened around him. His father was alive in all of his twenty-two years of life? His face twitched with disgust immediately and he pushed him away. T
Brian's mouth hung open at the revelation. The Addams were the highest-ranking and wealthiest of all other families in the city, known for their company, L.A.K.E Conglomerate. They had been around in the country for a long time, breeding generations. They were so popular that you couldn't be a citizen of the country without knowing them. But the whole family, except an old member, was assassinated and their corpse was posted on the internet. Before he died, the survivor transferred the rights of ownership to the Lennox family, a family that had a history of friendship with the Addams. A few days after the transfer of ownership, the old man died. Being the last member of the Adams family, his death marked the end of the Addams family. Brian read this exact story on the internet during research for an assignment. The Adams family were all dead so what was Edward saying? How could he be an Addams? Brian stifled a laugh. "Nice joke Dad."He glanced at Edward's face which didn't expr
The door yanked open and a man in a red suit walked in, holding a stack of files. "Hey Eddie, I just received the business proposal from Mr. Kowalski. Funny man. After his defiance, he still decided to bring it. What did I tell you?" He started speaking immediately, oblivious to the presence of the other people as his head was bent towards a pack of files he was holding. "Maybe we should play a little prank on him just to get him on his edge, you know. What do you think?" The man looked up and widened his eyes, finally noticing the other people in the study. "Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't know you had guests. I..." He stopped apologizing when he caught sight of Rosanna. "Color me shocked. Rosanna, is that you?" Brian narrowed his eyes. How does this man know his mother? A little smile tugged Rosanna's lip. "Hey, Richard." Brian took another look at the man and narrowed his eyes more, trying to remember where he saw him. The quiff on his blond hair looked very familiar. Brian let ou
"Yeah, your father told me to transfer it to you," Richard explained as he kept his phone back in his pocket. Brian stared at his phone with his mouth hung open. "Are you okay? Is the amount too small? I told Edward to send one billion dollars." "Uh, did you just say the amount is too small?" Brian looked at Richard unbelievably. He has never owned an amount exceeding a thousand dollars, now he had millions and he was saying it was too small? It was the greatest amount to Brian. Richard shrugged. "What do I know? I have more than that." "This is...this is so great. Thank you so much." "Anytime. If you need more don't hesitate to let me know. Anyway, how do I look? How's my hair?" He tugged his suit and ran his hand on his blond hair. It seemed he added more gel and brushed up his quiff because it was more evident than last night. He had also shaved. Last night, Brian saw some strands of beards on his cheek and chin, but his face was now as smooth as the marble tiles on the groun
Patricia and Margaret stared at Brian in surprise before bursting into laughter. "Oh, Brian Ashton. You make me laugh." Patricia said, doubling over in laughter. "He doesn't want only the gowns but the rest of our clothes? Nice joke." Margaret added. Brian only crossed his arms and waited in silence for their laughter to die down. He asked flatly. "Are you two done?" "Oh wait, you are serious?" Patricia said, still laughing. She drew in a deep breath to calm herself. "Maybe you are confused. This isn't like all your rags you call clothes. These are rich classy clothes worth a hundred dollars. They can probably foot your bills." Brian shrugged. "I know and I want them." "Too bad. We already bought them." "No, you haven't. Where's your receipt?" Patricia pursed her lips. She hasn't paid for them yet. "Well, Gabe will be here to pay for them soon." Brian sighed and faced the sales lady. "She doesn't own those clothes yet, right? So I'd like to buy them." "Well..." The sales
"Oh, I see. You and your mother are messing with me and ignoring my calls, right? You don't want to pay me. Guess what? I just threw out all of your useless stuff. That should bring you here." Brian read this text message as he was being driven to a salon Charlene recommended. Below this message was a picture of their belongings piled up outside the apartment. He chuckled. Even though it was a text message, he could imagine his landlord's angry expression and voice as he read it. The landlord hated him and his mother so much because they paid their rent late. What a relief they weren't living there anymore. He stared at the picture of all their belongings. His room in the mansion had everything he needed, even better. So there seemed to be no need to get his belongings. But his school books were among them. He needed the notes he had written in them for school. And he didn't feel comfortable leaving their belongings lying there for anyone to take. "Let's go to my former flat firs
It was a Monday afternoon at Star City University two days after the shopping incident. It was a normal day except for the fact that the school's poorest student had evolved. Patricia's video went viral but it earned Brian popularity instead of her. Brian had become the hot topic of discussion in the school. Who would have thought Brian had so much money? Everyone knew him as a poor student. Brian, who was aware of the attention he was getting, entered the cafeteria with Melanie and Charlene behind him. All heads in the cafeteria snapped towards him immediately. "OMG! The rumors are true." "Isn't that the latest shirt and shoe brand he is wearing?" "How is this possible?" "Charlene and Melanie are really lucky." Murmurs and hushed gossips filled the air Brian wore one of the shirts, jeans, and sneakers he bought in the mall to school. He even had a gold wristwatch and chains on his neck, and a new pair of glasses. He could have been mistaken for Raymond if not for his glasse
*SLAP* Brian's face turned to the side from the impact, shock written on his face. He wasn't expecting the slap to come at all. Slowly, he turned and looked at Patricia who was fuming in anger. "How dare you carry your wretched self into this prestigious place? Have you no shame? Do you see your type here?" Patricia spat. Brian felt rage rush through his blood. He fought the temptation to hit her back because if he did, he would do more than slap her. He opened to speak but was interrupted by another person. "What's going on here?" Alexia, who had just come out from another door and saw the commotion, asked. She also worked there. Alexia's expression of surprise changed to disgust when she saw Brian. "What's this good-for-nothing fool doing here?" Brian opened his mouth again but Patricia spoke immediately. "After humiliating me online, you still have the guts to come here, huh? Do you think you are some big shots because you paid some money? I'm very sure Melanie and Charlen
