Chapter Forty-four

An awkward and uncomfortable silence dwelt among Brian and Edward as Brian stood beside his father, resting his arms on the wall and breathing steadily.

It wasn't until he glanced at the cigarette pack that Brian broke the silence.

"Can I have one of those?"

"Have you smoked before?" Edward asked.

Brian shrugged. "There's a first time for everything."

Edward thought for a moment before shrugging. What was the worst that could happen? Brian was an adult already. And he probably won't like it much.

Brian took a cigarette out and lit the tip with the lighter.

"Suck gently," Edward told him and Brian did as he was told. He felt smoke fill up his mouth.

"Now, swallow."

Brian tried to swallow but the bitter tobacco taste wouldn't just go down his throat. He jerked back and coughed. It was the worst thing he had ever tasted.

"Yuck. That's horrible." Brian gagged, crunching his face with disgust. "How do you guys take this with a straight face?"

"You'll get used to it if you take it often."
