Vera and her mother are in a tense situation, throwing sharp words at each other. The atmosphere in the house becomes stifling, emotional distress filling the room. Vera's emotions are running high, upset that her mother has interrupted her conversation with William. She felt her privacy had been trampled upon.

"Mom, you shouldn't be like that!" said Vera, glaring angrily at her mother.

Amanda, her mother, shot back a glare. "Vera, I allowed you to be close to William all this time because I thought you were just a good girl who felt sorry for him. But, if you fall in love with him, I won't allow it!" Amanda said firmly, without a hint of doubt in her eyes.

Vera was silent, her eyes staring wide at her mother. She felt that her mother didn't understand her feelings and was only acting on what she thought was right. "You're even interrupting her when she talks!" she retorted, her frustration mounting.
