Chapter Five

"Alex," Natalie called out, breaking into Alex's thought process. "I was asking you a question."

"Hey fellas!" The coach yelled as Alex opened his mouth. "Get into positions. Let the training begin." He backed his words up with a whistle.

"Umm, I gotta go Natalie," Alex said as he jogged away from her and found himself in the hurdle created by the coach.

The basketball court was filled with three groups.

On one side was Alex and his guys plus his teammates, eager to train.

On the other side was Nathan and his bullying mates, who sat comfortably on the chairs with a devious smile on their faces.

And then there was the group of cheerleaders, led by Caroline and Jasmine. The two girls who had made it their life goal to continuously humiliate Alex.

Alex looked up at the boys who sat on the benches and knew that his mental health was about to be played with.

"Hey, Alex!" His coach suddenly called out, breaking into his line of thoughts.

"Are you listening to me?" The man asked, drawing his attention back to the hurdle.

"Yes, sir," Alex answered almost immediately

"Okay, now. Guy, listen up. I don't want you to see this as just training, okay. I want you to see this as an opportunity to make yourselves proud and improve on your skills. So go out there and show me what you got! Remember, team work makes the dream work!" The coach advised with a loud voice causing everyone in the courtyard to hear his voice.

"Now, what are we?!" He said their mantra, trying to cheer them up and remove any sluggishness.

"South Wolves!" The boys responded.

"And what do we do?!" The coach continued

"We win!"

"Good. Now go out there and win!" The coach yelled, finally breaking the hurdle.

The boys divided themselves into group of two. Playing against each other.

"Cole, if I were you, I would leave Alex's team now that you still can!" Nathan yelled from the benches.

"He has never won a thing in his life and he is sure to lose this one as well!" He concluded, laughing with his guys.

The game started in full force with Alex passing the ball to his team players, trying to score.

"Oh come on now, Alex, don't tell me you are trying to score?" Levi, one of Nathan's pals added.

"You can't even score a girl and you think you can score at basketball?! How pathetic can you really be."

Their words reminded Alex of how Susan was. Left him, causing his hands to be weakened and the ball dropped from them.

"Oh finally, he is starting to show us his true nature." Levi added.

"It's not his true nature. Alex has always been a loser. Right now, he is just showing us more of how badly he sucks."

Dustin jogged to Alex's side.

"Yo man!" He called out and Alex immediately looked up at him

"Snap out of it. Don't let them get to you or else, we are going to lose this game."

The coach immediately blew his whistle, indicating another round and Dustin jogged back to his corner.

"Did your little friend come to give you a pep talk?"

"I wouldn't listen to him if I were you. He shoots as he scores, woefully," Levi sneered.

"Can you blame him? Birds of the same feathers they say do flock together," Nathan said, adding salt to injury.

Alex shook his head, trying to not allow their words get to him but the more he tried, the more he failed.

Without thinking, he passed the ball to the wrong team.

Nathan and his guys did not let that pass without a snide comment.

"That was a good one, Alex. Not only are you a loser, you are also delusional. Who passes the ball to the wrong team," they said and all bursted out in laughter.

This continued for two more hours and finally the coach blew the whistle, signaling the end of the game.

The boys rushed to join in the hurdle. Alex looked dejected, he did not need anyone to tell him that he had performed poorly but somehow he knew that his coach would.

"Okay guys. That was terrible training. And Albert, what the hell? I know that Nathan and his guys kept talking but you are supposed to know how to maintain a sane mind against all that. Listen here, I don't want that to ever repeat itself again. So don't let it, okay?"

"Yes sir."

"Good. You boys remember that we are training. Don't let this bring you down. Work on yourself and when next we are training, I do not want to see that nonsense. Now get out of my sight!" He said and the boys jogged into their locker room.

Immediately they got there, Dustin lifted his duffle bag and threw it to a wall.

"I swear, if I get my hands on those boys I will teach them a lesson they won't forget in haste."

"Let it go," Alex said, ignoring his tantrums.

"How can you possibly tell me to let it go? Those boys were doing that on purpose!" He yelled.

"I know and I am saying you should let it go," Alex said and walked away.

Dustin sighed. He couldn't believe that his friend was just going to let it go without a fight.

Soon, he finished dressing and went outside to meet him talking to Natalie.

"So about that party? I never got a response," she spoke and her voice echoed.

"Umm," Alex stammered

"Wow, Alex. That was a really good game. Too bad you failed woefully. We already knew you would, but it is so sad that you had to show everyone that."

"Nathan cut it out," Natalie warned.

"Aren't you ashamed of yourself? You are allowing a girl to fight for you."

"Argh!" Dustin groaned from behind him but Alex was fast enough to restrain him before he did anything drastic.

"Okay, how about you just come to the dinner we will be having tonight? I never see you at any of those," Natalie said.

"Well that's because his broke ass can't actually afford to even be at an event like that," Nathan said, laughing.

"What? That's madness. Okay, I will foot everyone's bill this time. So, Alex, would you come now?" She said, smiling at him.

"Wow. He really is a coward. He is really going to allow a woman foot his bill," Levi said loudly.

"No he won't. Because I will foot the bill for him,"

Damien added. Tired of the insults his friend was getting.

Immediately, Nathan laughed.

"Here's an idea Alex. Why don't you foot the bill for everyone for once? I mean come on, you are always enjoying the fruits of other people's hard work. For once, don't be a coward. Be a real man and show us that you can take care of people," Nathan taunted.

"Okay, fine," Alex responded sharply. Earning a lot of gasps from the people that gathered.

"What?" They asked.

"Are you serious?"

"Yes. I will foot the bill for everyone. Where do you guys want to eat?" Alex said with a smile on his face and confidence in his aura.
