“Hey, I appreciate you not saying anything to Dee,” I said quietly, my face glued to the phone.

David's brief nervous laugh came from the other end of the line.

—Don't worry, I know our friend. She would have pestered you into telling her every detail, and, well…” she murmured, and a slight, yet overwhelming silence settled over the conversation for an instant. The truth is that I don't even know what happened to me.

I held my breath.

I had the need to tell him to rest easy, that I knew exactly why he still felt like he had been forced to do what he did. However, there was no way he was going to complicate his life like this. It was best for him that he was left with the idea that he had had some idiotic impulse triggered by hormones, or the spur of the moment.
