Chapter Nine

Cash watched her as proudly walked away without a backward glance. He couldn't fathom if Vivian had always been like that, hating him only because he was poor. He could not understand what had changed, or if she had always been that way. Ever since he had an accident that caused him to have amnesia, Vivian had been vile and mean towards him.

Scrubbing his hands over his face, which had a pained expression, he let out a heavy sigh and focused on his present task of mopping the entire floor.

An hour later, he was done cleaning the floor and dragged his weary body and cleaning supplies down the elevator to the storage room.

“Hey Man, I heard what happened up there, you good?” George, his friend, asked as Cash stepped into their small shared office. Unable to reply, Cash nodded his head as he folded his damp self into the empty seat, not minding and placed his head on the table.

“Life really isn't fair” he mumbled under his breath, while his chin quivered. George, hearing him, placed his hands to his chest before mumbling his reply as well

“It really isn't. Chin up my man, do not be downcasted, there's always light at the end of the tunnel”

“Well, this tunnel of mine doesn't seem to have light or an ending. It's ever tormenting” Lifting his head, Cash stared at his friend in response

“Keep the faith brother. You look like shit though” he remarked

Cash scoffed, running his hands through his face and hair once again, causing his hair to spike up in different directions.

“Tell me about it. I feel like one too”

George smiled albeit sadly, opening a compartment in his office drawer, he ruffled through it in search of something

“Well, I think you should go back to my house and get my extra cleaning uniform, seeing as going to the Kentons will take a while.” keys in hand, he stretched it towards Cash, whose eyes had begun to tear up

He took the keys off George’s palm, but still held on to his hand, lightly squeezing it before he released it.

Smiling, he nodded his head at his friend, his voice choked up he mumbled his heartfelt gratitude

“Thank you, George.”

George waved his hand,

“It's nothing”

Cash’s stomach began to rumble, the noise filling the air, both men glanced at each other and burst into laughter with Cash’s ears going red at the tip

“Considering how much we drank last night, on an empty belly, even I will protest the lack of food”

Cash chuckled in response to George’s retort. He lifted his eyes to the wall and looked at the wall clock. It was his lunchtime, and his stomach probably knew it and used that moment to express its needs.

He slid his hands into his trousers pocket, he had a small change from his purchase of the bracelet, he needed to be sure the money was intact, so he could use it to purchase something to eat.

He had thirty minutes of break, and if he used it wisely, he could also see about returning the bracelet and getting his money back, with the deduction to his salary that was to begin, the money would help in going a long way for him, and also to his mother.

Cash got to his feet, and moved the chair backwards, the chair made a scraping noise as it moved, glancing at George, he informed his friend

“I'll be back soon. Time to go for my lunch break” George on the other hand nodded his head in response, leaning his head against the backrest of his chair.

On getting to the door, one of his feet out the door, while he held the don't frame, Cash turned back and gratefully nodded to his friend

“Thank you, George” who just waved him off in response, chuckling slightly, Cash headed out of the office, and into the street, as he stepped out, he noticed a black Cadillac that looked like the newest model, but took no note of it, though it was strange for such luxurious car to be there. His office was located at the backend of the company so he didn't require passing through the main entrance or through the reception area.

Walking down the streets, he tried thinking happy thoughts to lift his spirits, but couldn't. He wasn't a happy man and didn't have a happy home, so finding happiness within him was tough.

Walking briskly to meet up with his time, although he felt like dragging his weary self, still he kept on. Cash felt the back of his neck standing, and rubbed at his neck, eyebrows scrunched together.

Looking back to figure out why he felt that way suddenly, he noticed the black Cadillac from earlier driving slowly behind him, chills ran down his spine, as his mind raced with different thoughts. A kidnapper couldn't possibly drive a Cadillac, and even if they did, what could they want from a pauper like him, one with no money to his name? He was certain that if he did indeed get kidnapped, that would be the end of him, as the Kentons would never consider paying his ransom. Cash gulped loudly, and increased his pace, both arms swinging as he did.

From his side view, Cash realised the car was still trailing behind him, he grimaced and kept gulping. His heart still racing, he decided to be brave and stopped, to confront whoever was behind the wheel. He watched as the car came to a stop beside him, and his face turned white, of its own accord, his lips trembled.

His legs felt stuck to the ground, like they were weak and unable to move, and he began to look around him, glancing at his back for some sort of rescue, still glancing around, his gaze remained on the Cadillac and he watched as the driver clad in his uniform, came down and headed to the back of the door to open for his passenger, bowing his head

Blinking rapidly, Cash stayed rooted and watched with mouth wide open as the passenger came down. The man was grand, dressed in a cream-coloured suit and donning a black blazer. He was affixed as he stared at the fellow, who seemed to be walking towards him. Dazed, Cash looked sideways to confirm if the man was heading for him, and gulped loudly when he found nobody waiting.

He gulped again and held his breath as the man neared him, almost closing the distance between them, Cash opened his mouth, yet no words dared to come out.

The fellow finally got to his front after what seemed like hours, and bowed to him, his hands at his back on his waist.

“Young Master, it is good to see you again”
