Chapter 4

In the luxurious Presidential Suite of the Sunrise Heritage Resort, James 's anger was palpable as he pointed to Ray's face on the monitor screen. "Who is this useless matrilocal son-in-law of the Peters?" he bellowed.

The plump hotel manager repeatedly bowed and confirmed, "He is Ray Garcia, Sarah's husband. He's the one who stole your bathrobe. The surveillance footage leaves no room for doubt."

James  was incensed. The Peters were playing a dangerous game by crossing him, and he couldn't believe that Sarah would stoop so low as to involve her husband in humiliating him. He was determined to crush them all.

Shooing away the manager, James  immediately made a phone call and had the post of him running around naked and causing a commotion in the lobby deleted. In exchange, the hotel offered a week of free stay to the elderly tourists and promised to remove any evidence of the incident to protect their reputation.

But James  wasn't satisfied with just that. He called the patriarch of the Peters family and threatened to use all his power to destroy their business if they didn't apologize to him within 24 hours. The Peters would have to beg on the streets if they didn't comply.

Meanwhile, in Noah's home, Sarah and Ray retreated to the bedroom. Despite Noah's initial attempt to drive him out, he couldn't bear to leave Sarah alone and scared. Seeing her distress, Noah decided to let him stay.

After shutting the door out of old habit, Ray reached for a quilt to sleep on the floor, but Sarah stopped him with a dismissive wave. "Never mind that. Get in bed," she said with a sly grin. "If Noahsees you sleeping on the floor, she'll mock you again."

Ray couldn't help but be drawn in by Sarah's alluring figure and shoulder-length hair. Was she implying that they could finally consummate their marriage tonight? After three years of waiting, he could finally embrace his role as a husband and say goodbye to his virginity. He couldn't wait any longer and climbed into bed eagerly.

To his dismay, as soon as they lay down side by side, Sarah placed a blanket between them and issued a chilling warning. "Letting you sleep in the bed is my way of saying thank you. One wrong move and I'll cut it off!" Ray was taken aback and quickly deflated. Had he misinterpreted her intentions all along?

Disappointed and silent, Ray lay there for what felt like an eternity. Finally, Sarah turned to face him and asked a question that caught him off guard. "Since you followed me into the hotel, why did you hide?" Ray hesitated before answering honestly, "I just wanted to know if you would go in."

Sarah was taken aback by his honesty and sneered, "You're honest and feckless. I didn't expect that from you. You planned to turn around and leave if I went in, didn't you?" Ray was caught off guard and scrambled to think of a response. He decided to turn the tables and ask her a question in return, one that she couldn't evade.

He spoke with feigned composure, "So, why did you hesitate at the door? What was going through your mind?" Sarah closed her eyes in pain before responding, "If I tell you, promise me you won't laugh at me. I started regretting it the moment I left home. There were moments during my drive when I wanted to turn back, but I couldn't bear the thought of my mother being sent to prison." Sarah let out a helpless sigh. "When James  opened the door, he kept leering at me, and that's when it dawned on me that I couldn't sacrifice my dignity to be a good daughter.

I would do anything for my family, but I can't bear the thought of sleeping with someone like that." Ray gave her a thumbs-up inside, convinced that she was the woman he loved and entirely in agreement with her views. After that, there was silence in the room, but the air was charged with temptation. Suddenly, Sarah's phone rang. She checked the screen and saw that it was a message from Sophia. The message had been sent eight times, with an urgent tone asking where she was. Without much thought, she replied, "I'm fine. I'm at Noah's." She turned off her phone and fell asleep. As time passed, night deepened. It was the first time Ray and Sarah had shared a bed in their three years of marriage. Even though there was a blanket between them, Ray felt contented as he drifted off to sleep, inhaling her faint scent and even drooling. Little did he know that several off-road vehicles were on their way downstairs, and the people inside them intended to harm his wife.
