Violet looked into Victor’s eyes. The man who was fiddling with a small spoon to stir his late tea asked without looking Violet in the eye. It made Violet feel like she was being judged for a mistake she didn’t know where she stood.

Finally, the girl nodded. “He’s your friend.”

“He’s not my friend.” Victor denied it outright, making Violet flinch slightly at his answer. “You shouldn’t trust people so easily and treat them so well.”

“Miss Maria is very friendly and kind, Victor. I think you understand that more than anyone.” Victor averted his gaze as he sighed, which made Violet look at him quizzically. She didn’t know why Victor was acting this way toward his own childhood friend, especially since he seemed to really like Maria’s existence.
