CHAPTER 2

"Who is he anyway?" Andrew asked.

"Unfortunately he is Linda's husband."

"Is it Linda your daughter?" He shone his eyes wide.

"Yes." Mrs Davidson sounded ashamed. "However with time, she is not going to be with him anymore. She would be all yours very soon Andrew."

"I look forward to that Mrs Davidson."

Romeo got down from the cab he had boarded and rushed into the hospital building.

He got to the maternity department were his wife was. He got to see the doctor walking hastily down one of the labyrinthian corridors.

He was on his theater overall, with his nose mask down under his chin.

"Doctor! Doctor! I am here."

"Were have you been Mr Stewart?" The doctor furrowed his eyebrows. He didn't look pleased.

"I went to look for some money."

"I hope this time your search for some money was fruitful because we are not going to begin the cesarian session if you don't pay at least fifty percent deposit." The doctor sounded stern and angry. "I have been too kind to you and it seems that you are abusing my act of kindness."

"Far from that doctor." Romeo reached for his pocket and took out some dollar bills.

The doctor counted it and the look on his face depicted that everything was okay. "We would begin the CS immediately."

"Thank you doctor. Would she survive it?" Romeo sounded nervous.

The doctor sighed. "Let's hope so." He turned around and moved down the corridor.

Romeo placed his palm on his forehead. He had gone through a lot since this week started. It wasn't easy for him to have gotten the six thousand five hundred dollars which was the first half of the payment for his Linda's operation.

Two days ago, he received the news that Linda would not be able to give birth to their unborn child through the normal process and since the news came impromptu, Romeo did all he could to gather the necessary funds for his wife's operation.

He went through risks to get some money. He was involved in street fights were he staked some of his money. The risk proved successful all thanks to his perfect knowledge and ability in martial arts.

He grew tired and slept.

In the quiet hum of the hospital, the skilled hands of the medical team swiftly performed the cesarean section on Linda.

The surgery, though challenging, was successful, and a cry echoed through the maternity department as the newborn entered the world—a girl, a symbol of hope amidst the tension that gripped the room.

With the procedure complete, the doctor, wearied but accomplished, retreated to his office.

Meanwhile, the midwives assumed the responsibility of caring for the newborn, cradling her in the sterile, soft surroundings.

However since the baby's mother was still unconscious, one of the nurses who was a nursing mother offered to breastfeed the newborn.

In a separate corridor, Mrs. Davidson approached the doctor's office, her demeanor a mix of determination and secrecy. The doctor, recognizing her, greeted her with a nod.

"Mrs. Davidson, welcome to my office. How are you?"

"I am fine doctor." She smiled.

"Congratulations, your daughter has given birth, but I am surprised as to how your family had left her husband to run all the errands in search for money when you people have a lot of cash. Is there something I am missing?"

She hesitated before speaking, "That is not important doctor, however that baby must not live."

The doctor's brows furrowed in disbelief. "What? Why would you say such a thing?"

Mrs. Davidson leaned in, her voice a conspiratorial whisper, "That baby is an offspring of a nobody and considering my caliber of person, I cannot and would never cuddle that thing, I can't even imagine myself cuddling it." She paused.

"That child is better off not existing. I plan to separate Linda from that church rat. I have already arranged a fine, rich, young man to marry her and that baby would not only bring bad luck, but it would also shatter my plans to elevate my family and give my daughter Linda a better life. Doctor, you must understand, for the sake of my family's reputation, you need to end this."

The doctor, taken aback, responded firmly, "I cannot do such a thing. It goes against my professional ethics and moral principles."

Mrs. Davidson persisted, "Think about the consequences towards my family if this child lives. You know about our reputation in Yilaburg since you are a very good friend of ours. Our family will be disgraced. We would not have the alliance we want with the Baines family."

The doctor, maintaining his stance, refused, "I cannot compromise the well-being of an innocent life for the sake of reputation. What has come over you Mrs Davidson?"
