CHAPTER 38

The guards did not stop Jim, which very much puzzled Lola and made her put the newspaper down.

[Haha!] Joe laughed a little. [Talk about killing softly. Good. Now, what are you going to say to your mother-in-law? She’s looking right at you.]

As Jim went over to her, she stood doubtfully, wondering what he was going to do.

Jim gave her a hug, utterly puzzling her, but she didn’t say anything. “Thank you,” he said.

Lola didn’t get his words. What was he thanking for? The check was canceled, wasn’t it? He should be jumping up and down like an angry donkey, but he was acting like a cool koala. Something didn’t add up. Nevertheless, she smiled and said, “Was the check useful?”

“Yeah, you live and you learn. Today I realized that taking my aunt’s check to the bank was the same as taking sand to the beach,” Jim replied in a neutral tone. There was no hatred in his voice but only realization, which was somewhat scary.
