Arran did this not because he took pity on them but instead Arran considered the fact that leaving them there for anybody to come across was a security risk.
If Arran had just left Richard and the rest of them to their own devices and somebody came along, Richard who knew of the existence of the traps Arran had left scattered in the tunnels was very likely to expose this intelligence to them just to save himself. It would have been especially bad if Richard had exposed this information to the members of the alliance of defeated participants.
