Chapter 5

Leo was looking at Darwin. He would never have imagined that there was a chance he would meet someone who knew his mother.

Leo was looking at Darwin, he was trying to make sure that he didn't even make a mistake. “You knew my mother? You called her name. Do you know her?”

Darwin rubbed his head, he didn't even know what he was going to do. He looked at the boy in front of him. He didn't know what he was going to do to make Leo stop asking questions.

“If you ask me any other questions I might blow my head away, but there is no way for me to do that.” Darwin looked at Leo. He knew that the boy was still confused and everything was happening all too fast.

Leo saw that Darwin was a bit stressed out. He noticed that all his wounds were healed and closed. He was in good condition, and he knew that the man in front of him might have been the one that made sure of that.

“Sorry, I don't know what to do, and it's been a strange ride for the past few hours for me. Please tell me how you knew my mother?” Leo asked in a calmer tone. He was looking at Darwin expecting an answer that would give him an edge.

“I knew your mother, she was a skilled mage in our guild when she was still an adventurer. I am Darwin Fae,” Darwin smiled when he was telling Leo about himself. He wanted the boy to feel a bit safe and not worried that he was some kind of bad man.

“You and my mother were comrades? That means you're a mage like her too, I am Leo.” Leo's face lit up a bit like that of a child when he heard that the man in front of him was a part of his mother's guild.

Darwin smiled when he saw the boy's behavior, “No, my brother Varrick is the mage, I was the berserker in the guild. Your mom was one of the mages.”

Darwin paused when he noticed that the boy was a bit sad. He knew that he was remembering Abigail, there was no way for him to forget his mother after all.

Darwin took a deep breath before telling Leo he knew about Abigail's death. “Leo, I know that your mother is dead.” Darwin watched as the look on Leo’s face changed. He was not sure if it was the right thing to do for Leo, but he knew that he had to tell the boy that he was aware of the situation.

Leo was a bit quiet for a while, it was clear that he was not going to be saying anything for a whole while, but he was aware his mother had died. Leo, who had enough energy, suddenly felt weak in his legs when he was reminded of his late mother. He didn't know what was going to happen to him.

“I have to be one of the unluckiest people born into this world. I have no way of cultivating my mana core and I don't even know if I will be able to use magic in this life. Now, worse, I have lost my mom. I don't know what can make this even worse.” Leo was sulking, the pain of losing his mother was something he couldn't bear.

Leo didn't know how he was ever going to survive in a world where magic and mana were everything. ‘It seems like in every life I was meant to suffer before I die.’

“And who in the world told you that you are not going to be able to use magic or cultivate your mana core?” Darwin asked the question as he was looking at Leo. He was shocked that the young man was so sure that there was no hope for him to use his mana core.

“Other people unlock their affinity when they hit 15 years old. I am 17 and there is no sign of me being able to use my mana core or even unlocking my affinity.” Leo looked at Darwin, he sounded so sure that it was a bit scary for him to imagine. “It was deemed impossible by all the high mages in Lyron.”

“You have the potential to become an S rank warrior; there is a two-layer seal on your mana core. Your mother used her druidic magic to seal your mana core when you were a child.” Darwin was looking at Leo, he didn't want to let him keep believing he was a weak man.

But no matter what he told Leo, the boy was still in disbelief, he had done everything to make sure he got his affinity unlocked and had the power to make sure that nothing was going to hold him down. But everything he tried, nothing seemed to work, and he had lost all hope. He was not even sure there was going to be a chance he would be able to use the lowest type of magic.

“What are you saying? There is no way I have magic. I have tried and tried.”

Darwin looked at the boy before shaking his head. He knew that the boy was talking because he had not felt it yet. “You were able to kill an Orc Bear, you moved at speeds that even we warriors find hard to move at without using a mana coat. You then managed to kill the beast with one strike. You might not be able to use your magical affinity for now, but that doesn't mean you don't have magic.”

Darwin looked at Leo, he saw the boy’s eyes widen, he knew that it was clear he didn't understand what Darwin said. “Why did mom seal my magic? There is no clear reason why she would even think of sealing my magic like that. What in the world is going on here?”

“Your mother knew that if you were allowed to cultivate your mana core then your father’s enemies would have found you earlier, and it would have been hard for her to even think of any way to protect you. She did it to make sure that her son would live a long life with her before she died. I know you think that all I am saying is a big ball of rubbish, but think about it.”

“Abigail loved you more than anything and would do anything to make sure that you were by her side. But a mother's love knows no bounds, even your father sacrificed himself so you could live.” Darwin's words were heavy, he looked down, his face covered in sadness.

He didn't want to be the bearer of bad news, but he had to make sure he told the boy the truth. ‘If I don't tell him all he needs to know, then he will never agree to train. The only thing I will keep from you is the amount of power you hold and your father's origin. Abigail made it clear that she didn't want you to know what you were until you had broken the second seal. Until then, I will ensure that you train to learn how to control your powers as you break the seal.”

Darwin looked at Leo as his thoughts ran a bit wild. He knew that it was going to take a lot to make Leo train, but he needed to be sure that the boy would be up for everything they were going to be doing.

Leo was still quiet, he didn't believe that there was something that would even show him that he had enough mana to become a warrior that would be that great or even reach a level of power that the people of Ivandale respected.

“So you're telling me that there is a chance that I will be able to get my affinity?” Leo looked at Darwin, he had a smile forming on his face.

Darwin smiled as he looked at Leo. He knew that convincing him that there was hope for him was going to be hard, but he was going to be doing everything in his power to make sure that nothing was going to hold Leo down.

“You are going to make one heck of a mage when you train hard enough.” Darwin looked at Leo when he saw that there was a sign of hope on his face.

“I don't wish to be a mage,” Leo said in a deep voice, he was not going to be a mage.

Darwin tilted his head to look at Leo to find out what he had in mind. “Then what is it you want?”

Leo had flashbacks of his past life and the moments he didn't have the strength to stand up for what was right.

‘All my life, I kept running from everything and everyone that came my way. I have never done anything in my life that will be seen as something brave. I kept hiding behind others. I kept running from the world. But no MORE!’ Leo clenched his fists in rage. He had decided that he was going to become someone stronger.

To avenge his mother’s death and make sure he left a mark for himself in the world. Leo looked at Darwin, “I want to become the strongest warrior in Ivandale!”

Darwin was a bit surprised that the boy was that ambitious. “Is that so?” Darwin scratched his head, he turned to look at the other side. “You will have to take your training as serious as hell if you want to become a warrior that will make Ivandale recognize you. That means Dungeons, quests, and adventures. You will have to take everything seriously and commit to being the best. Are you ready for that?”

Darwin looked at Leo, he wanted to get the boy’s response. Darwin was not going to train Leo if he got an arrogant answer from him. He needed to know that the man he was going to train would be a warrior who would be a strong but compassionate man.

“I am willing to go through the pain, please teach me to become a warrior and break these seals.” Leo knelt, bowing his head. He was going to make sure that nothing would stop him.

A smile formed on Darwin’s face. “Sheesh get up, your training will start tomorrow. You need to meet Varrick first,” Darwin sat down and noticed the smile that had formed on Leo’s face, he was not going to let the boy down.

Leo, with a smile imprinted on his face, looked at Darwin. “Thank you, Master.”
