Chapter 49

Elijah straightened his back. This was his opportunity now. But he wasn't sure how to go about it. Firstly, he didn't want to appear desperate.

"I did what I had to do to save a life. I would have done it for anyone. You don't have to pay me back." He said, but in his heart, he waited. Men like Mr Carter didn't like to owe debts. He was banking on that.

"We're both men. You and I know it's impossible not to show you my gratitude. I don't know if my granddaughter has told you, but I usually don't stop until I get what I want."

"I recall her saying something like that." He nodded, sending a glance her way.

The pity was nowhere to be found. She was smiling now. Another thing Winnie Carter knew how to do all too well. Her eyes sparkled every time she smiled. He kept ignoring the warning voices in his head. Telling him he was getting too deep into dangerous territories. Just for one night, he wanted to hold on to something.
