Chapter Forty-one

Emma sat at the head of the dinner table, a secret she had been harboring all day now weighing heavily on her mind. The clinking of silverware against porcelain plates filled the air as her family members gathered for their usual Sunday dinner. Her mother, Mrs. Adams, sat to her left, engrossed in conversation with Uncle Arnold, who had just returned from a business trip. On her right, her older sister Mary chatted away with her older brother, Michael.

“Did you guys hear about the fire at Oscorp last night?” Arnold asked, breaking the silence that had fallen over the table.

Everyone nodded in unison. It had been the topic of discussion on every news channel that morning, and the images of the burning research facility were still fresh in their minds.

Arnold chimed, his brows furrowed. “It’s unbelievable. The damage is extensive. How could something like that happen?”
