Chapter 005 – The System’s Marketplace

*****

‘What’s the purpose of the QR points, and what do they signify?’

Although Williams had yet to confirm the authenticity of the funds for which he had received the alert, he had already calmed down considerably by now, and his countenance had returned to being serene.

Observing him, he and several others could be seen standing and sitting casually before a bank.

This had been the situation for over two hours now, during which everyone inside the bank was instructed to evacuate the premises due to an urgent matter that needed attention.

Even though Williams and many other customers had never encountered such a situation before, they obediently complied, maintaining a calm demeanor without rushing the bank.

In the meantime, Williams had acquired all the necessary information about the system, but it had just occurred to him to inquire about the other reward that came alongside the money.

[QR point stands for Quest Reward point, and it is awarded every time the host completes a quest, with the quantity depending on the level of quests completed by the host.]

‘Oh…’

Williams pondered for a moment and nodded his head, then, gazing at the number one figure displayed in a virtual interface that only he could see before him, Williams asked, ‘And?’

[The purpose of this point system is to serve as currency that can be used to acquire items from the system.]

Williams, “_”

‘Didn’t you just mention a moment ago that you are bound to me, and we are going to spend a significant portion of our lives together?’

[Er… yes, host.]

The system responded with a perplexed tone, unsure of where Williams was headed with his inquiry.

‘Then why do I still need to make purchases from you? Can’t you simply provide everything I desire?’

As soon as this question was posed to the system, a blank expression appeared on the virtual screen before Williams, which then transformed into a pair of rolling eyes.

[Dear host, it doesn’t work that way.]

‘Why?’

[Because it simply doesn’t work that way.]

Williams, “_”

“Just admit you don’t have an answer, What's with your programmed responses?” He grumbled softly before changing the subject.

‘What items are available for purchase from you, then?’

[Very well, host. The store will be accessible to you shortly, and all the items available there can be acquired at your current level.]

With the system's voice ceasing, the virtual screen suspended before Williams's eyes transformed into the type of window typically seen in video games.

Initially, Williams only cast a curious glance at it, without any intention of taking the items displayed seriously. However, as soon as his eyes landed on the first item, his breath caught in his throat.

The more Williams read, the quicker his breathing became.

Had it been before Williams lost everything, when his parents were still alive, he wouldn't have understood the significance of these things. However, now that he knew how life operated—without skills, talents, backgrounds, or education, one would be subjected to a lifetime of subservience and bullying—he regarded these as treasures.

Beads of sweat immediately covered Williams’ face, and his body began to tremble with excitement.

“Are you all right?”

A voice filled with uncertainty and concern suddenly roused Williams from his reverie.

Glancing at the speaker briefly, he redirected his focus to the screen.

“Pst…” The person who had been ignored clicked her tongue unhappily and pouted.

‘Look at this shabbily dressed guy ignoring me. I was only showing concern because of the ever-changing expressions on your face since we arrived here. But who am I kidding? Why do I always lose my cool when I see an attractive guy?’

Back to Williams.

‘Sy… system, I… please, I want everything! Everything!!!’

Williams was genuinely excited, beyond anything he had ever felt in his life.

It was as if he, someone who had only known poverty all his life, had suddenly stumbled upon the opportunity to possess all the world's wealth. However, it was a voiceless response that greeted his enthusiasm.

[Host should first check the prices.]

‘Oh…’

Williams quickly nodded his head and fixed his gaze on the item list. But in the next moment, it was as if he had swallowed a swarm of flies.

...

By the time Williams reached the last item, he already resembled a fool. The lady who had been beside him had distanced herself considerably, convinced that something was amiss.

‘System, are you playing games with me?’

He looked at the pitiful one point in the corner, then at the lowest-priced item in the store, unsure whether to cry or laugh.

It took Williams a long time to finally accept the harsh reality before him. Even if he had 10 million dollars now, he was still exceptionally poor, unable to afford even the least expensive items available.

[Actually, the prices could be considered reasonable. Think about it. Which ordinary person could become proficient in any of these skills in less than a minute.]

Only after this realization did Williams finally come to terms with the harsh reality and resolved to work diligently to accumulate Q.R. Points, as the system had promised to provide him with a continuous stream of quests.

Just at that moment, a bank staff member emerged from the building, instantly capturing everyone's attention.

“Sir, please step forward.”

“Ma’am, please come forward.”

The woman began selecting people randomly, showing no concern for whether they had just arrived or had been waiting for a while, greatly confusing many individuals.

After some time, only two people remained unchosen.

“Please follow me,” she said to those she had selected, completely ignoring the existence of Williams and the other person.

“Er… miss, I also have a business to attend to at the bank.”

It was the other person, aside from Williams, who spoke upon witnessing this.

Hearing that, the woman finally stopped and turned back, her gaze capable of making someone question their very existence.

“I kindly request you to leave now. We are swamped and too busy today to deal with individuals who likely only have between 1 and 10 dollars in their accounts.”

The other guy, “_”

Williams, “_”

The chosen individuals, “_”

After a brief moment, the selected individuals erupted in laughter, causing the other guy to feel deeply embarrassed.

“You… what do you mean?”

He questioned the woman angrily, causing her to calmly repeat her words.

Frustrated beyond measure, the other guy finally lost his temper.

Fuming, he pointed at the woman and then stormed out of the bank.

“You're doing a great job here! Keep it up!”

His laughter was filled with a sense of menace, but neither the woman nor her companions paid it any mind.

As for Williams, he finally snapped back to reality.

“I'm quite perplexed. How did you conclude that we have only 10 dollars in our accounts?”

When it was his turn, the woman regarded him with disgust, much like he had done to the guy before him, and then she chuckled coldly.

“Isn't your appearance evidence enough?”

“Huh?”

Williams looked down at himself, his extremely worn and dirty clothing, and he almost died from embarrassment. But what level of embarrassment had he not experienced in the past five years?

“That still doesn't give you the right to look down on us,” he shook his head. However, in response, the woman actually nodded seriously.

“You're right. What if we make a wager? I'll kneel and apologize to you if you have more than a hundred thousand dollars in your account, but if not, you must slap yourself five times and call yourself a pauper. Do we have a deal?”

Williams, “_”

The crowd, “_”

“Wow! That was exceptionally cruel of her. Even I don't have that much in my account. How could she expect someone dressed like that to possess such wealth?”

The crowd began to murmur under their breath, casting pitiful glances at Williams.

As for Williams, he remained dumbfounded for a moment, then suddenly, his eyes flashed with determination.

“Deal.”

“Huh?”

Everyone, including the woman, was dumbfounded and couldn't react for a while.

“You agreed?” she asked, her tone filled with astonishment.

“Didn't you want me to agree in the first place?”

“I…”

The woman suddenly didn't know whether to laugh or cry.

‘How could someone like this have over a hundred thousand dollars in their account?’

However, just as she pondered this, a thought crossed her mind.

‘Oh… he must have wanted me to cancel the wager. What a clever scheme.’

With that realization, she smirked and gestured for Williams to join them.

“Were you all witnesses when he accepted the bet?”

“Yes!” some people quickly responded excitedly, eager to see what would happen next.

As for the rest of the crowd, they suddenly regarded Williams with pity, arriving at the same conclusion as the woman.

With that, the woman enthusiastically led everyone inside the bank, with Williams in tow.

‘It's been a long day anyway,’ she thought. 'It wouldn't be considered a sin to have fun.'
