Chapter 006 - The Delight Found In Helping Others

*****

“You… how… how… you… you… How did you possess such a huge sum of money in your account? You... you clearly don't appear to be someone who could have it."

Inside the bank, facing a teller, a group of individuals were presently gazing at a handsome young man in tattered attire as though they were witnessing a ghost.

The individual who had just stammered as though she were a person with a speech impediment was the employee who had initiated a wager with Williams some moments ago.

She was simply shocked beyond words because never in her entire career at the bank had she seen someone with such a colossal amount appear like this before.

As for the crowd, they were merely speechless and astounded at this moment, as if they had all ingested swarms of flies.

They continued staring at the still-composed Williams and abruptly felt as if they were all frogs inside a well, thinking they had seen the entire world.

They couldn't react, but still, their situation was significantly better than the woman of the bank who had initiated the bet with Williams.

"Well... I'm uncertain about the part of me resembling someone who could not possess the sum of money in my account, but that wasn't what I heard someone saying earlier, correct?"

The commotion here had already alerted the entire bank, and at present, everyone, including the security personnel and employees, was attempting to grasp what was transpiring, When they finally did, they couldn't help but bestow pitiful gazes upon the unfortunate woman before Williams, who had turned pale after hearing Williams' question.

'This should serve as a lesson to each of us never to underestimate anybody again in the future,' they all noted mentally as they stood at an arm's length, observing the scene with no intention of becoming involved.

As for the unfortunate woman, blood suddenly surged to her head, and she felt as though she might faint.

Naturally, she comprehended what Williams was referring to, and from the looks of it, she realized that Williams was determined to exact his revenge.

"You... you deceived me! You cheated me! Why did you consent to the wager when you knew you had that sum of money in your account?"

"Ehn?"

All the people who hadn't been present at the time the bet was made quickly nodded their heads and cast animosity-filled glares at Williams, but those who had been there, particularly the ones who had previously sympathized with Williams, quickly directed speechless gazes at the woman.

"Weren't you the one who insisted that he wouldn't possess up to 100 thousand dollars in his account?"

They all started to mutter, causing those who had initially blamed Williams to switch sides once again.

"So, she brought this upon herself..."

They all sighed and shook their heads.

As for the woman, she suddenly regretted it intensely.

She regretted the day she began to torment those beneath her with her position, she regretted the first day she bullied someone in the bank, and she regretted thinking she was clever when Williams had questioned her earlier about how she was certain he wasn't affluent.

But what could regret accomplish?

Perhaps, if it was only the hundred thousand dollars the bet was based on had been found in Williams' account, she would have declined to fulfill her part of the wager. But now, she understood the immense trouble she would bring upon herself if a wealthy customer like Williams decided to withdraw all his money in anger and move to another bank.

Observing all of this—the rapidly changing facial expressions, the stunned onlookers, and the incredulity in the air—Williams suddenly reminisced.

Even in the past, he had never experienced this level of contentment.

'How long had I endured being bullied?'

'How long had I endured being stepped upon?'

He almost lost his composure, but Williams promptly regained control of himself.

In truth, he hadn't genuinely anticipated finding ten million dollars in his account when he accepted the wager earlier. It was simply his anger that had been stoked to such an extent, and he had immediately regretted his impulsive decision the moment he was escorted into the bank, to the counter where his account would be examined.

At that moment, Williams had even started planning how he would endure being smacked in the face by the woman, when the demeanor of the person inspecting his account underwent a significant change, becoming exceedingly respectful.

[Do you now completely believe in this system?]

Williams heard a self-satisfied and prideful voice in his mind, which prompted him to smile broadly—a smile that appeared sinister only in the eyes of the people observing him.

"I..."

The woman, who had assumed that Williams would ultimately relent in seeking revenge, lost all hope when she saw what she interpreted as an evil grin on his face. Thus, with her soul departing her body, her knees touched the ground.

"I... I... I apologize for treating you in the manner I did!" she uttered the weighty words after mustering all the strength in her body, causing Williams to return to the present.

Observing the woman kneeling before him, Williams was suddenly reminded of what had occurred a day ago at the company before he was fired, and he contemplated replicating what had been done to him. Nonetheless, he shook his head.

"There is a clear distinction between bullying, imparting a lesson, and seeking retribution."

Armed with this understanding, Williams' expression reverted to its prior calm state. Subsequently, he waved his hand dismissively and disregarded her.

"I would like to request a card and make a withdrawal," he glanced back at the person who had inspected his account, bewildering everyone.

"Ehn?"

"Is that all?"

Everybody was left speechless.

They had all anticipated that Williams would exploit the opportunity of his victory to punish the woman to his heart's content, and perhaps even have her fired due to her mistreatment of him. However, now, seeing Williams merely ignoring the woman as if she had never existed to him in the first place left them profoundly baffled.

Even the woman was rendered speechless, and she was immediately engulfed by embarrassment and had the sudden urge to vanish into the ground.

'So, my kneeling before him doesn't hold any significance to him after all, and I had assumed he would be delighted to get back at me...'

On this particular day, an obscure individual had arrived and shattered a haughty woman's pride, enlightening her that one should never judge books by their covers and that what one takes very seriously might ultimately mean nothing to others.

...

"Yes... Yes, sir..."

The staff member whom William faced regained her composure after a while. Subsequently, as if Williams were an esteemed individual, he was attended to by several of them respectfully that day, a feeling Williams had long forgotten.

Seeing this, and with no more drama to observe, the crowd dispersed to attend to their affairs. Nevertheless, the story and the drama they had witnessed that day would be retold by them, gradually spreading far and wide, even being adapted into movies and serving as a lesson to many who enjoyed assessing people's worth based on their appearance.

However, that wasn't Williams' concern.

Thank goodness he had always relished the sensation of being treated like a VIP in the past, so he remained unruffled, intensifying the belief held by the people attending to him that he was an affluent and important individual.

...

After a series of form completions, biometric verifications, and so forth, Williams was eventually courteously escorted out of the bank by at least half of the employees who continuously apologized for the subpar treatment he had endured in their bank, pleading for him to patronize them in the future.

As for Williams...

Once he exited the bank, it finally dawned on him that everything that had just transpired wasn't a dream; it was extremely real.

He found it exceedingly challenging to believe that just like that, he, who had transformed into someone who could barely afford a single meal per day, had suddenly become a millionaire, with the potential to become even wealthier in the future.

[Just diligently complete all the tasks assigned to you in the future. What is that paltry sum of money? You will not only be immensely wealthy but will also ascend to become an all-powerful entity that stands atop the world someday.]

Williams, who had just sampled the essence of what the system meant, promptly nodded his head, resolving to go to any lengths necessary to complete all the tasks assigned to him in the future.

Then, in that manner, Williams finally returned to the hospital he had departed from several hours earlier.

Not much had changed upon his return. The one doctor and two nurses were still as diligent as ever, even more diligent than before, as they had to handle all the tasks.

The only alteration was that now, there was no janitor to relieve them of their duties.

They had been taken aback when they saw Williams return, with the more playful nurse inquiring if he had missed them so much that he couldn't wait to reclaim his job.

Yet, even then, they didn't forget to genuinely dissuade Williams from it, advising him not to work for them since there was no compensation whatsoever, and that he would even have to spend his money instead.

To that end, Williams immediately felt his intention to return was correct.

Without another word, he surprised the three middle-aged individuals by simply placing a bag filled with money amidst them.

They had been utterly dumbfounded the moment they saw the contents of the bag and were unable to react even after some time.

But once they did, they did something that surprised Williams—they returned the money to him, asserting that he shouldn't squander his money on them, but instead use it for something more meaningful to himself.

However, after much persuasion and displaying his account balance that indicated he still had nine times the amount he had donated, they accepted it.

By the time Williams departed the hospital, he was made to believe himself as a hero, a savior who had sacrificed everything for the less fortunate.

The three individuals had expressed their gratitude incessantly. However, when they informed the current patients about someone donating such a substantial sum of money—one million dollars—Williams had welled up with tears with the way the patients had thanked him endlessly, finding it hard to believe that performing acts of kindness could bring such joy and fulfillment.

...

[Although this system still blames the moon goddess for assigning it to a host like you, this system now finds you somewhat pleasing to the eyes, given what it just witnessed.]

These were the words of the system as soon as they left the hospital, but Williams, who was still savoring the joy of assisting others, found himself unable to react.

It took him a long while to return to reality, and when he did, Williams harbored a new aspiration to the one of revenge he had in the past: to aid those who truly needed help and deserved it.

But to do so, he needed to complete more quests.

‘Hey, system, are there no quests in sight yet?‘
