Chapter 3 : A besmirched union

Mia wakes up and sees Dean sitting beside her bed.

Behind him was a young woman in a maid outfit.

“Good morning Mia, did you sleep well?” He asked, caressing her hair.

Mia nodded.

“This here is Beatrice” said Dean, pointing to the woman behind him, “She's here to help take care of you and help you get ready”

“Ready?” Asked Mia, a little confused, “for what?”

“I want us to go to the Department of civil affairs today, so we can register our marriage” said Dean.

“Oh” said Mia, lowering her head.

Dean sensed her reluctance, which he understood.

“You don't seem very pleased with this, if you don't want to, we could…”

“NO!” Yelled Mia, panicking.

“I want to” she said softly.

Dean took her hand and started caressing it softly

“Do you think we're moving too fast?” he asked gently.

Mia shook her head, Dean had been so nice to her, so she didn't want to risk offending him.

She did think they were moving a little fast, but still, Dean was better than any man she had ever known, so if he wanted to marry her, she didn't wish to protest.

“Alright then” said Dean as he rose up from her side, “I'll be waiting”.

Beatrice would help Mia get ready, and soon she was in the black limousine headed for the Department of civil affairs.

During the trip, Dean caught her twiddling her thumbs quite a lot.

It was obvious to him that she was nervous, so he tried to ease her tension.

“What's wrong, you seem nervous?” Asked Dean.

“Yeah, I am a little nervous, If someone had told me last week that I would be married in a few days, I would have called them crazy” she replied.

Dean held her hand gently but firmly “Maybe you're right, it is a little crazy, but every so often, we need to do crazy things to get that special thing we truly want” said Dean with a wide smile on his face.

Soon they got to the department of civil affairs and went into the building.

They sat in the reception hall for a few minutes before a short, plump woman in a purple suit came to meet them.

Dean had already pulled some strings and gotten all the verifications and paperwork completed the previous night.

So all the woman did was hand them some documents to fills.

As they worked to fill the documents, the plump woman couldn't help but marvel at the odd pairing that sat before her.

She had seen many different pairs of people come to the department of civil affairs to register their marriage, but this had to be the strangest she had ever seen.

Here was this tall, muscular and incredibly handsome man, ready to marry a woman in a wheelchair.

She scoffed at the thought at first, as she couldn't believe the man was truly affectionate towards the crippled woman. She felt the woman had to be from a rich family and this man only wanted to marry her for her money.

At least she thought that, until he saw how he looked at her, the care and love in his eyes made her heart race.

She had been married for 15 years and couldn't remember the last time her husband looked at her like that.

After they had finished filling out the paperwork, the plump woman handed them their marriage certificate.

Mia waved the piece of paper excitedly in the air.

“We did it Timothy, we are married” she said feeling like she had just won the lottery.

“Yes we are” said Dean as he leaned down and hugged her.

He had signed his false name, Timothy Clarkson, on his marriage certificate.

As much as he wanted to use his real name, as much as he wished he could reveal to her his real identity right then and there, he held himself back.

As they returned to their car, Mia soon stopped her wheelchair dead in its tracks.

She turned her face to look at Dean, and he was stunned by the amount of worry he saw in her eyes.

“I don't want to ruin the mood, I know we just got our marriage certificate, but we still need to get my parent's signature on our marriage certificate, or else you'll never be accepted as a true member of the Hamilton family” said Mia.

“That shouldn't be a problem, I mean your grandfather did approve of our marriage last night” said Dean

Mia bowed her head “I don't want to see them” she said “They've been so horrible to me, especially my father, he's barely even spoken to me in years and didn't even bother to attend the engagement ceremony”

Dean placed a comforting hand on Mia's shoulder “don't worry Mia, you don't need to fight for their approval or love anymore, you have me now, and I will give you all the love and care you never got from them”

Mia smiled as Dean lifted her off her wheelchair and placed her on the limo seat.

Throughout their journeys together, Dean had never shied away from lifting Mia's wheelchair along with her in it whenever they arrived at steps that weren't handicap accessible.

Mia was slowly starting to believe that Dean might actually like carrying her around.

Soon they would arrive at Mia's father, Andrew Hamilton's office.

The man was an architect and had a relatively large-sized office for his profession.

It was obvious to Dean he was one of the wealthier members of the family.

Mia and Dean went inside the reception hall, where they met the receptionist, A tall, blond woman who stood behind the counter.

“Hello there my name is Mia, I'm Mr Hamilton's daughter, I'd like to see my father, is he in?”

The receptionist looks at her and then looks at Dean, giving him a little seductive wink which caused him to roll his eyes.

“Just another woman who thinks she can conquer me with her looks” thought Dean in anger

“Yes he's in Miss Hamilton, I'll inform him of your presence and he'll call for you when he's ready, please take a seat in the waiting room” replied the receptionist.

Dean and Mia waited thirty whole minutes before the receptionist informed them that Mr Hamilton was ready to see them.

Dean observed that in that entire time, no one else had come to see Mr Hamilton and no one had left his office.

“Was that how much contempt he had for his own daughter? That he'd leave her out here so long” Dean pondered as they entered into his office.

In there set Andrew Hamilton, with a bored look on his face. However, his bored expression changed once he saw Dean.

“Hello Mia” he said coldly “And you must be Timothy Clarkson, the man my father chose to marry my daughter” he added turning towards Dean.

“Indeed I am Mr Hamilton”

“It seems my wife Sophia was right, you are indeed quite a fine-looking man” said Andrew with a devious smile.

“Which is a good thing, as it would have been a shame if my daughter had gone on to marry a man who not only had no wealth and status, but also had nothing in terms of looks”

Looking at his daughter and seemingly wanting to spite her even more, Andrew added “well it seems like you dodged that bullet my dear, it's a shame you don't dodge cars quite as well”

Mia's heart twisted in her chest, this was why she didn't want to come here, this was why she didn't want to see her father.

He took every opportunity he could find to mock and insult her.

Dean clenched his fist, fuming with anger.

HOW DARE HE SPEAK TO HER THAT WAY, HIS OWN DAUGHTER.

Dean had to resist the urge to punch the older man square in his jaw.

“So?” Asked Andrew, breaking the awkward silence, “what the hell do the two of you want?”

Gesturing to Mia, she handed Dean the marriage certificate and he dropped it on Andrew's table.

“We'd like you to sign our marriage certificate, officially recognizing our union as part of the Hamilton family” said Dean.

As soon as Andrew heard this, he burst out laughing.

“Marriage?!, Already?” He asked, wiping a tear from his eye.

“I mean I knew you gold diggers worked fast, but I never expected…"

“With all due respect Mr Anderson, I didn't marry your daughter to increase my wealth and status” said Dean, cutting Andrew off.

“HORSESH*T!!” yelled Andrew slamming his fists on his table.

“What do you take me for, a fool?” asked Andrew angrily.

“You can't deceive me Timothy, I have seen your background check, you were picked off the street, you have nothing to offer my daughter and everything to take from her”

Pointing his finger at his daughter, “and you Mia, don't you dare forget that everything that has ever happened to you is your fault.”

“If only you had listened to your mother and me, none of these unfortunate events would have happened to you, and you would not be stuck with a PAUPER!!, as a husband” said Andrew as he grabbed the document and began to sign it.

“And now you will reap what you have sown, because it is obvious that you are desperate for someone to find you valuable” added Andrew, signing for both himself and his wife before roughly shoving the document back at Dean.

Dean was visibly confused, what did Andrew mean by Mia would reap what she had sown?

Dean's thoughts were broken by the sounds of Mia crying besides him.

The sight of his wife crying due to what her own father said to her, enraged him beyond belief.

“Now, get the hell out of my office”, said Andrew, not even attempting to look at his daughter.

This was the last straw for Dean, as he knew he wouldn't let this man get away with making his wife, the woman who saved his life, cry.

Dean stood up and quietly pushed Mia's wheelchair out of Andrew's office.

However, as the automatic doors closed behind them, Dean grabbed a silver coin from his pocket and aimed it at a cup of piping hot coffee seated in front of Andrew.

Using his Herculean strength, Dean flicked the coin at the speed of a bullet.

The coin went straight into the cup, shattering it and spilling the burning hot liquids all over Andrew Hamilton's body, table and white suit.

Laughing, Dean pushed Mia away, while both the confused and pained screams of his new father-in-law rang from behind him.

“At least the scars from that burn would help him understand a little bit of his daughters' pain” thought Dean.
