A cloud of dust obstructed visibility in the rear-view mirror as Kroll sped away from the Juvenile Detention Facility. Meanwhile, Jin held on to the hood of the Jeep with every ounce of strength he could muster. With every vibration, he lost his grip slightly each time.
Once they had created plenty of distance between them and the undead, Kroll brought the vehicle to a halt. Jin’s fingers were stiff and bled profusely. His restoration skill got to work fast, and his wounds healed after a while.
He chose not to disclose this information, therefore he didn’t mention this to anyone and let them wrap his hands with a piece of cloth. He considered himself lucky that the nerves got damaged when he died, or he’d be writhing in pain by now.
While Rena mended Jin’s injuries, Kroll stayed in his seat and checked the conditions of their passengers. He couldn’t help but think that more kids in there could be alive or that their life hanged by a threat. He slammed his hands on the wheel in irritation.
Jin noticed his reaction. “When we get back, we can organize a bigger group and come back… if there are more survivors, we’ll surely bring them to safety…”
Kroll appreciated the sentiment, but he knew in his heart it was an impossible thing to do. They barely escaped with only a few people. It was pretty apparent that being locked up in a cell for so long dehydrated the kids. The teenagers were lucky they got to them when they did. He sighed in his heart and turned to look at his son. His worries washed away. He was at least able to save his son.
Rena lifted her head after she wrapped Jin’s hands. She looked around and scanned the area. “There’s a grocery store around here somewhere, where the guards used to shop from. We can restock our supplies and maybe carry some back.”
Both Jin and Kroll liked the idea and nodded. They returned to the jeep and drove according to Rena’s directions. As she instructed, they reached the grocery store.
The three of them went inside cautiously. Jin pushed the store’s door and bells tied on top rang. The chimes startled them at first and as if from a reflex, Rena and Kroll pulled their guns. Jin whispered the moment he saw them. “I thought you ran out of bullets?!”
Kroll coughed and whispered. “They don’t know that…”
Jin looked at him, confused. “You don’t mean the undead, right?”
“R-Right…”
Rena, who stood next to them, whispered aggressively. “Focus!”
Jin and Kroll looked at each other and chuckled. After that, deafening silence took over the place. As if they tiptoed, their steps were soundless. Their focus was at its peak.
They moved together as one entity. The entire time, Rena and Kroll stuck by Jin’s side. He was the only one carrying a weapon. They moved deeper into the store when they heard a lonesome growl coming from behind a door. Their gazes fixated on it.
Jin stepped forward and signaled for them to open the door for him with a swift wave of his hand. Kroll grabbed the doorknob and gently unlocked the door. The undead pushed out, knocked down Kroll and just as it was about to bite him, Jin smashed its head with his trusted baseball bat.
Blood showered Kroll while the undead body fell on top of him. With the help of Rena, he shoved it off him. Kroll stood up and wiped the blood off his face. He turned to Jin and uttered in a somewhat muddled voice. “Thank you!”
Jin simply nodded. A thought crossed his mind at that moment. When they first met with Kroll, he came so close to blowing his brains out that even his mother, Coral, had gotten involved and slapped him. A painted smile on Jin’s face irritated Kroll. “Don’t get used to it…”
He later spat a few droplets that went into his mouth. “Blegh. Nasty…”
The young man remained silent. They finished checking the store and once they made sure it was safe; they relaxed and began gathering supplies to feed their new guests and take back to the hospital for the other survivors.
As he searched, Jin noticed a shelf at the bottom with backpacks. He ran enthusiastically towards it and emptied his hands in one. He grabbed a few more and gave them to Kroll and Rena. With the same enthusiasm, they took one each and filled it to the brim.
They grabbed a few fruits to enjoy in their ride over, plenty of water bottles, canned food, and whatever medicine they could scourge. They ignored anything that needed a fridge or had a short lifespan with low nutritional value, such as snacks.
After having soothed their thirst and filled their bellies, they picked up the backpacks and headed out, only to see their vehicle speeding away. The four teens were on the side of the road with scratches on their arms, meaning whoever stole their car also dragged the kids out forcefully.
Without a way to chase after them, they first attended to Krish and the others. The grocery store had bandages and disinfectants they could use. Jin and the others helped them inside, since getting their vehicle stolen, forced them to spend the night and travel the next day or the one after.
Like before, during the night, they took turns keeping watch. The night went by uneventfully. Once the morning came, Krish and the rest were feeling much better. Going that long without food and water took its toll on bodies for sure, since they still appeared to be weak.
That didn’t stop Kroll and Jin from thinking they had a few extra hands, so they filled a couple more backpacks and shared them between themselves. Right after Jin and the others stepped outside, the dangerous vastness that surrounded them brought fear into their hearts.
Rena ran back inside without uttering a word and came out with a gun. Jin and Kroll looked at her, surprised. She shrugged her shoulders and uttered. “My dad gave this to the owner a few years back when they had multiple robberies…”
Kroll looked deep into her eyes. “No matter what, don’t use it until we find the jackass that stole my Jeep! I want to empty the entire clip on his face!”
Jin intervened in a serious tone. “Or you can use it to protect his son…”
Kroll’s demeanor instantly changed. “That… Definitely!”
Rena tossed it to Kroll. “You can do that yourself. You are a better shot than I, anyway.”
Right after they decided who would hold on to the pistol, they set out.
While Jin and the others left to find Kroll’s son, back at the hospital, things grew wry. Jorge was losing control of his people when more and more undead were breaching their defenses. Some didn’t even take their patrols seriously, which led to people dying when undead wandered inside. When the word got out that they were running low on food and water, morale plummeted. When they tried to make a few runs into Colby town, the undead cut them off. People became visibly scared and hungry. Coral tried her best to support Jorge and his decisions and subside the worries of the rest, but to no avail. As the days passed and there was still no sign of Jin and the others, people became more frightened and groups formed one after the other that went against Jorge's leadership. Some even openly challenged him. “They are not
Growl! There must have been four or five undead, one after the other, walking at a steady and sluggish pace next to Jin and the others. They kept going through the stiff group, attacking no one. Growl! Once they passed, a teenager sighed in relief. Soon after, the other followed in the same mannerism. What he didn’t expect, though, was that teen’s arrogant outburst. “That’s right, keep going, you mindless freaks!” Jin pleaded with him to keep it down, without success. Kroll, who was the closest to him, grabbed his hand and pulled him towards him. The teen forced his hand out of Kroll’s and maniacally shook it at the undead, who walked away. “Yeah!” He celebrated, laughed out loud and shouted at the top of his lungs. “Get
Jorge’s face twitched. His hoarse voice forcefully burst out of his throat. “Everyone, go back inside!” One by one, he visited the people mending their defenses. Right after they finished, he tapped them on the shoulder. “Nice work. Go inside!” Once he went back in, he stationed more guards as lookouts to keep him informed of the situation. Inside the hospital, the people shivered when they heard the news. Frightened, they searched for rooms to barricade, in case the undead broke through their barricades. Jorge, though, called one guard for a strategy meeting. The corridors of the hospital, for the first time in a while, were clear of people. Only Jorge, a guard he called, and Coral remained. Those who could go up the stairs went to the second floor, whilst the older folk grabbed the rooms they could reach.
Clouds obscured the silver rays of the moon from reaching the world below. The veil of darkness painted the sky as if it was a blank canvas. In the night's stillness, the cheerful chirping of crickets brought about a harmonious melody. It reached the ears of Jin and the others as they lay on the cold ground after a tiring day of walking in the blazing sun. Those few moments of blissful noise raised their spirits. A caressing wind tickled their skin when it blew past them in a hurry. Rena and Krish, along with the other two teenagers, had already fallen asleep. Kroll supported his head with his hand as he laid on his back, staring at the endless dark sky above him. The clouds might have hindered the moon, but the flickering stars still assembled and sparkled proudly. He enjoyed the beauty for as long as he could s
When they heard the name coming out of Rena’s mouth, Kroll and Jin looked at her, surprised. Jin voiced his concern. “Are you sure?” Rena nodded silently. Jin dreaded their encounter. Not because of fear, but the timing couldn’t be worse. His mother’s whereabouts were unknown, and Barton was at his home. Merely the thought of him hurting her boiled his blood. Not even a few seconds passed, and Barton’s voice sounded heavy and scornful. “Rena, you little bitch...” He fired a few more shots in their direction. His loud voice muffled the noise of the gun. “Betraying me wasn’t enough...?” “I didn’t betray you... Your actions came with consequences as I had told you before...” “B
The sound of a droplet falling in a pool of water reverberated in a poorly lit cave. A warm yellow light flickered inside. His footsteps left shallow prints in his passing, whereas his dark aura overwhelmed the brightness. Once inside the cave, he saw someone in a seated position in front of a fire with their back turned towards him and a hood covering their head. A female voice warmed his heart. “Welcome, Jin.” “Who are you? What is this place?” The young woman stood up and turned towards him. Jin, stunned, took a step back. “Y-You…?” The girl’s golden hair fluttered like a restless sea. Her warm tone pulled Jin’s heartstrings. The thought alone of the other world hit a nostalgic note of his essence. “Nice to see you again. My actual body has no recollection of this
Jin opened his eyes and saw half his body submerged in a hole, the one he dug himself out of. Chipped nails dripped blood. The crimson liquid poured from his orifices when the sharp edges of the rocks cut him on his way out of the grave. Ripped clothes with dirt and dried blood. Cuts and bruises dripped fresh, while he chewed on pebbles. He looked around hazily. His blurry vision didn’t help, either. He stroked his eyes, but the particles tore his cornea and more blood gushed out. Once again, he felt relief, thankful he didn’t feel pain, but the situation remained troublesome. With his eyes half open because of the glued eyelids, he crawled all the way to his house. Right after he entered, he went straight to the bathroom, up the stairs, where he tripped a few times. There was no electricity, therefore the icy co
The skyline across which surrounded the valley had hues of orange painted to the east. It’s the following morning, and Jin spent the night in the camp of the new people he met the day before. Jin woke up in a tattered tent. He remained laying on his back with his hands supporting his head for a few minutes and pondered over the events that took place. At some point, he chuckled when he remembered the teen growling towards him. -Right after he rendered the teen unconscious, hurriedly the teacher approached Jin and signaled him to stop the brutality. That person wore a white round hat, which made him stand out even among the other weirdos, Jin thought. “My name is Lound…”. He looked at the teen on the ground and shook his head. Lound’s voice was calm and came out soft and unrushed. “This guy here is Ronnie. I’m sur
