While Jin and the others left to find Kroll’s son, back at the hospital, things grew wry. Jorge was losing control of his people when more and more undead were breaching their defenses.
Some didn’t even take their patrols seriously, which led to people dying when undead wandered inside. When the word got out that they were running low on food and water, morale plummeted.
When they tried to make a few runs into Colby town, the undead cut them off. People became visibly scared and hungry. Coral tried her best to support Jorge and his decisions and subside the worries of the rest, but to no avail.
As the days passed and there was still no sign of Jin and the others, people became more frightened and groups formed one after the other that went against Jorge's leadership. Some even openly challenged him. “They are not coming back! They left us here to die!”
Coral, annoyed by what they said, stepped forward to defend her son. “Jin would never do that. I’m sure he’s on his way back as we speak…”
Jorge, with a calm voice, added to that remark. “Do you think any son would abandon his mother?”
An old man from the back stepped forward. The clacking of his cane alerted the others of his presence. His regretful voice echoed in the corridors. The people surrounding him could see the frustration in his eyes. “My children abandoned me, and I don’t blame them. An old man like me would hold them back…”
Jorge interrupted him. “I’m sure something came up…”
The old man shook his head. “Doubt it… They were with me when this started. They brought me to the hospital and left me here when her husband attacked your wife…”
Jorge and Coral flinched. The old man’s words brought back memories they tried to forget. Freshly imprinted in their mind’s memories are hard to bury, especially when their loved ones are in the next room under a sheet.
The old man continued as he looked around. “These people here have every right to be upset. Just like myself, their families abandoned them once before.”
He then pointed at Jorge and Coral with his cane. He raised his voice as much as he could when he addressed the rest of the people standing there. “These two have done right by us. Jorge kept us safe with his leadership and Lady Coral cared for each and everyone of you, even when her son is out there fighting for someone else’s child.”
After they heard the old man’s words, everybody settled down. They looked at each other and, as if a switch had turned, their expressions changed. Patrols returned to their posts, and everyone got around talking strategy on how to gather supplies from Colby’s abandoned houses.
The guards suggested teaching people how to shoot and help with the supply runs. The people at the hospital agreed that a trained person could provide more options and solutions than citizens that simply meshed because the situation demanded it.
Meanwhile, across the vast nothingness, sweat drenched Jin, and the others as they walked through it. After having their means of transportation stolen, they had no choice but to walk.
A trip that took them half a day by car, it would take them at least two days on foot and that if they didn’t have weakened teenagers with them. They came to terms with their situation and adjusted their pace accordingly.
And if that wasn’t enough, they had to camp outside in the open space. Nighttime came, and Jin kept the first watch. Being undead himself, he didn’t need to sleep, but closing his eyes helped him relax.
The area they camped had an old well they passed. It dried out a long time ago, but the surrounding space was empty, giving them a clear view. With matches they grabbed from the grocery store, helped them build a fire.
While on watch, Jin got up from his seated position, grabbed a piece of lit wood and his baseball bat. Something moved in the dark, which piqued his curiosity. He monitored the camp as he made his way closer to where the noise came.
Unable to see anything, he went back. The moment he turned his head, a translucent window of brown and red popped up in front of him.
{Undead Level 1}
He threw the lit wood to the ground and stepped on it to put out the fire. The undead walked right next to him without an issue. It didn’t even go towards the others. He glanced in their direction and saw that everyone sounded asleep.
He raised his bat and bashed the undead’s head in. Blood sprayed and painted the ground. Jin then kneeled over it and rummaged through its skull. He grabbed the piece he’d always eaten and gulped it down, having forgotten he got back the sense of taste.
For the first time since he died, he felt the texture and tasted the iron like bloody interior of the undead’s brain. He immediately felt sick to his stomach. The moment the core went down, everything else came back up.
He flinched and cringed until he held it in. Soon after, a see-through screen appeared.

Surprise, confusion, and excitement all at once bombarded him. “Upgraded without working out… that’s a first.”
He jumped up and down a few times and realized he was lighter than before, which elevated his spirits further. Though it didn’t last when he heard growls getting closer.
He ran back to the group and woke them up as quietly as possible. They helped him put out the fire and waited. With only the light coming from the moon above to guide their sights, they squinted their eyes.
The growls drew closer, and their raising heartbeats boomed in their ears. They tried not to let their voice peep out when the undead moved into their vicinity, but to their surprise, they completely ignored them.
Frozen like statues, Jin and his company watched the corpses from the corners of their eyes as they walked past them.
Growl! There must have been four or five undead, one after the other, walking at a steady and sluggish pace next to Jin and the others. They kept going through the stiff group, attacking no one. Growl! Once they passed, a teenager sighed in relief. Soon after, the other followed in the same mannerism. What he didn’t expect, though, was that teen’s arrogant outburst. “That’s right, keep going, you mindless freaks!” Jin pleaded with him to keep it down, without success. Kroll, who was the closest to him, grabbed his hand and pulled him towards him. The teen forced his hand out of Kroll’s and maniacally shook it at the undead, who walked away. “Yeah!” He celebrated, laughed out loud and shouted at the top of his lungs. “Get
Jorge’s face twitched. His hoarse voice forcefully burst out of his throat. “Everyone, go back inside!” One by one, he visited the people mending their defenses. Right after they finished, he tapped them on the shoulder. “Nice work. Go inside!” Once he went back in, he stationed more guards as lookouts to keep him informed of the situation. Inside the hospital, the people shivered when they heard the news. Frightened, they searched for rooms to barricade, in case the undead broke through their barricades. Jorge, though, called one guard for a strategy meeting. The corridors of the hospital, for the first time in a while, were clear of people. Only Jorge, a guard he called, and Coral remained. Those who could go up the stairs went to the second floor, whilst the older folk grabbed the rooms they could reach.
Clouds obscured the silver rays of the moon from reaching the world below. The veil of darkness painted the sky as if it was a blank canvas. In the night's stillness, the cheerful chirping of crickets brought about a harmonious melody. It reached the ears of Jin and the others as they lay on the cold ground after a tiring day of walking in the blazing sun. Those few moments of blissful noise raised their spirits. A caressing wind tickled their skin when it blew past them in a hurry. Rena and Krish, along with the other two teenagers, had already fallen asleep. Kroll supported his head with his hand as he laid on his back, staring at the endless dark sky above him. The clouds might have hindered the moon, but the flickering stars still assembled and sparkled proudly. He enjoyed the beauty for as long as he could s
When they heard the name coming out of Rena’s mouth, Kroll and Jin looked at her, surprised. Jin voiced his concern. “Are you sure?” Rena nodded silently. Jin dreaded their encounter. Not because of fear, but the timing couldn’t be worse. His mother’s whereabouts were unknown, and Barton was at his home. Merely the thought of him hurting her boiled his blood. Not even a few seconds passed, and Barton’s voice sounded heavy and scornful. “Rena, you little bitch...” He fired a few more shots in their direction. His loud voice muffled the noise of the gun. “Betraying me wasn’t enough...?” “I didn’t betray you... Your actions came with consequences as I had told you before...” “B
The sound of a droplet falling in a pool of water reverberated in a poorly lit cave. A warm yellow light flickered inside. His footsteps left shallow prints in his passing, whereas his dark aura overwhelmed the brightness. Once inside the cave, he saw someone in a seated position in front of a fire with their back turned towards him and a hood covering their head. A female voice warmed his heart. “Welcome, Jin.” “Who are you? What is this place?” The young woman stood up and turned towards him. Jin, stunned, took a step back. “Y-You…?” The girl’s golden hair fluttered like a restless sea. Her warm tone pulled Jin’s heartstrings. The thought alone of the other world hit a nostalgic note of his essence. “Nice to see you again. My actual body has no recollection of this
Jin opened his eyes and saw half his body submerged in a hole, the one he dug himself out of. Chipped nails dripped blood. The crimson liquid poured from his orifices when the sharp edges of the rocks cut him on his way out of the grave. Ripped clothes with dirt and dried blood. Cuts and bruises dripped fresh, while he chewed on pebbles. He looked around hazily. His blurry vision didn’t help, either. He stroked his eyes, but the particles tore his cornea and more blood gushed out. Once again, he felt relief, thankful he didn’t feel pain, but the situation remained troublesome. With his eyes half open because of the glued eyelids, he crawled all the way to his house. Right after he entered, he went straight to the bathroom, up the stairs, where he tripped a few times. There was no electricity, therefore the icy co
The skyline across which surrounded the valley had hues of orange painted to the east. It’s the following morning, and Jin spent the night in the camp of the new people he met the day before. Jin woke up in a tattered tent. He remained laying on his back with his hands supporting his head for a few minutes and pondered over the events that took place. At some point, he chuckled when he remembered the teen growling towards him. -Right after he rendered the teen unconscious, hurriedly the teacher approached Jin and signaled him to stop the brutality. That person wore a white round hat, which made him stand out even among the other weirdos, Jin thought. “My name is Lound…”. He looked at the teen on the ground and shook his head. Lound’s voice was calm and came out soft and unrushed. “This guy here is Ronnie. I’m sur
The shocked expression on Jin’s face became pretty apparent, even to Ronnie, who didn’t even hear what Lound said, but he could see it on him. Jin shoved Lound to the side and created some distance between them. Jin then stared straight into Lound’s eyes. His voice trembled when he uttered. “W-What did you just say?” Lound sighed before taking a deep breath. “When the corpses overran the hospital, a group had already come down from behind, trying to get away. Their leader sprained his ankle. They distanced themselves from the hospital, but corpses rained down on them from all sides.…” Jin focused intensely as to not miss a single word coming out of Lound’s mouth. When Lound paused and caught his breath, Jin’s still heart almost jumped out of his chest. Lound continued with as much detail as possible to ease the young man’s mind. “I, along with a few fellows, helped them get away, and we headed towards our camp when we heard a gunshot coming from the town…”
